Could one of the NFL Capologists explain this salary chart to me?

The base salary is obvious enough. Is the signing bonus a pro-rated amount of what is remaining of the bonus, or is it the entire bonus the player received?

Total salary seems to be Base + Bonus, so what how do you arrive at that Cap number? How does Jeff Garcia & David Carr have such a high bonus & total salary amounts, but such low cap numbers?

Cap number = Base salary + (total signing bonus / number of years)

I think thats the simplest explanation.

I like the fact that Brett Farve had a bonus of $720 classified as "other" (there were some RB's with the same amount). What's the deal there? And what else is accounting for his cap value?

Exactly.

Carr has a base salary of just over 1 million dollars. His bonus was 10 million+. That bonus is for a contract of 6 or 7 years. (if memory serves me correctly) That only comes out to around 1.5 a year. His cap number will ends up at 2.6 million.

"other" are things like roster bonus, workout bonus, likely to earned incentives for 03, and unlikely to be earned incentives that were earned in 02.

For the princely sum of $720 though?

So from this chart, there is not enough information to calculate the cap value. You need to know the length of the contract to figure the cap number, correct?

Is that correct that Tim Couch didn't get a signing bonus?

probably just roster bonusus or workout bonus. There are tons of weird stuff thrown in there. Or maybe some team goal was reached that was tied into his contract.

His base salary this season is 1.04 Million. His signing bonus is 10.92 Million over 7 years which comes out to 1.56 Million this season. 1.04 Million + 1.56 Million = 2.6 Million.

If Carr were to get cut, the entire remainder of his bonus would be added to his cap number in one lump sum, correct?

What about if he retires? Are the Texans on the hook for the rest of the signing bonus, or does the player forfeit that money?

It depends on when he's released. If they waited until June 1 to do it, the remaining figure is split in half. 1/2 on the cap next year, 1/2 the following year.

Before June 1, it all goes on the books instantly.
