In the mailbox
  • Quentin Baker, a wide receiver, has been made academically ineligible for the upcoming season for failing a class.
  • Jesse Bronson, a defensive end, has been made academically ineligible for the upcoming season for failing a class.
  • Casey Devine, an inside linebacker, has been made academically ineligible for the upcoming season for failing a class.
  • 7 players inducted into the College Hall of Fame, none from the Big 10 though.
  • FB Mueller and ILB Derubeis request more free time.
  • TE Fruth and P Riley are single once more. Buy some flowers next time, guys.
  • Four schools hires new head coaches.
  • Coach of the Year is... (surprise surprise) ...Sammy Hatcher, Florida! Damn, Sammy must be 89 years old now.

Staff hiring
We need to replace our Mid-west scout and our defensive coordinator, as both has been hired away to other teams.

Our new DC is 65-yr old Oscar Fain, who's lousy at play-calling, but Terrific in congeniality, Excellent with linebackers and defensive backs, Very good at injury avoidance, Pretty good at rehabilitation, and Good with defensive linemen.

For the Midwest region we hire Andre Lane, who's Terrific or Excellent at scouting five positions.

  • Ogden looks very very good - clearly a future star if he develops to his potential.
  • Nybo is actually pretty decent for a recruited walk-on. His arm strength is especially impressive.
  • Heath is an OK running back, and could produce given solid blockers in front. Not flashy, but could be very reliable.
  • O'Donnell is a notch better, and has the size to play halfback. Interesting.
  • Terrell is a typical walk-on that shouldn't hurt us academically at least.
  • Gilmore should be a serviceable tight end.
  • Ballard has some ability right now, but is unlikely to make much noise.
  • Aikens is a huge prospect, and should form a dangerous tandem with Ogden later on.
  • Magee is a red-liner with very little potential.
  • Newton is a raw prospect with balanced abilities.
  • Flores is a little more talented and could be a steady if unspectacular starter.
  • Alston gives us no hope of help, a wasted scholarship.
  • Anderson is the big talent at kicker we've wanted for some time.
  • Moore is a walk-on, and probably will be a career backup.
  • Bethel, another walk-on, is a little better but if he starts we're in trouble.
  • Newsome is adequate, but won't be enough.

The halfback position was very thin before I converted two players, former FB O'Donnell and former QB Wilson. Now we can afford to redshirt the freshmen. England and Kaplan starts. The FB will be our primary ballcarrier, but it's a concern that Stone hasn't stepped up.

Mississippi (0-0) at #18 Indiana (0-0)(-10)

We start with three consecutive running plays, twice with Kaplan and once with England before punting. But we regain possession shortly after Dorrough intercepted a pass and returned it to their 47. We get called for grounding and the drive stalls. The game is still scoreless when we start on offense with 2:51 left in the first quarter. Vallery finds Bertram for 43 yds and later connects with him again for a 16-yd TD pass. 7-0, Indiana! On our next drive we start at midfield and get gains of 18 and 16 yds before Vallery finds Bertram ... touchdown, Indiana! 14-0 at 12:27 in the 2nd quarter.

We score on our third successive drive when Cash kicks a 28-yd FG for 17-0. Vallery is flagged twice for intentional grounding which kills the next drive, but Mississippi can't get anything going. We open the third quarter with two penalties and have a 3rd and 29 ... which is converted as Vallery completes the pass to Bertram, who goes 85 yds for a touchdown! 24-0, Indiana, at 11:55 in the 3rd quarter. We get a safety minutes later when Horoszowski sacks their QB Allison in the end zone. 26-0, IU. Vallery completes three short passes, gaining 39 yds, before the running backs start moving the ball, ending with Kaplan's 8-yd run for the score. 33-0 at 5:08 in the third quarter.

We get great field position on the next drive as Bertram get a good return on a short punt. Vallery completes a pass to England for 5 yds and another score and we're up by 40-0. That's the day for Vallery as he leaves in favor of Marzullo. Mississippi manage to hold us deep into our own end zone, which gives them a short field to work with. When they also complete a 33-yd pass then their score with 4:31 left is almost a foregone conclusion. The final score becomes 40-7.

#13 Indiana (1-0)(-4) at North Carolina State (0-1)

Vallery starts with two incomplete passes, then finds Bertram for 10. After he ran for 8 yds we tried to convert a 4th and 2 on their 38, but failed. The Wolfpack waste no time: passes for 19 and 20 yds, followed by a 4-yd run, sets up a 10-yd TD pass to give them the lead, 0-7, North Carolina State! We get a FG on the following drive as Barker lost three yds on a 3rd and 1 on their 7. 3-7 at 4:07 in the first quarter. On their next drive, the Wolfpack QB, Gallegos, airs it out and finds WR Keim for a 62-yd TD! 3-14, North Carolina State! The home team crowd goes nuts!

It doesn't look good as we go three-and out on our next drive, but at least we manage a turnover on downs at our 34-yd line as Bleess and Toombs sacked Gallegos on a 4th and 13. Vallery passes to Bertram for 14 yds, and we start running: Kaplan for 8 and 5 yds and Stone for 8, which moves us to their 18-yd line. Vallery hits Rhodes for a 17-yd TD pass after a 1-yd gain by England, 10-14, North Carolina State.

At halftime we're still down by four, and Vallery starts the 2nd half with four straight completions - 20 and 13 yds to Rhodes, 18 yds to Fruth, and 8 yds to Kaplan. After a pass was defended we turn to the ground game with Barker, England and Kaplan for a 3rd and 3 on their 11. Vallery drops back and finds England in the flat, and the halfback finds a seam towards the end zone. Touchdown, Indiana, and 17-14 at 10:49 in the 3rd quarter. Next time we have the ball we start out with a 24-yd pass to Bell, and Vallery adds passes for 10 and 12 yds before running himself for 9 yds for a 1st and goal on their 4. Three plays later Barker scores and we're up 24-14 at 3:47 in the 3rd.

NC State tries to respond, and get a 4th and 5 on our 19. A field goal narrows our lead to 24-17 as the fourth quarter begins. England runs twice for 16 yds, Vallery passes to Stone for 25 yds and Kaplan runs three times for 26 yds with a 19-yarder that moves the chains to a 1st and goal on the 2-yd line. Vallery easily scores on a short pass to Kaplan. 31-17, Indiana! The game is basically over as Sanford intercepts a Gallegos pass and we get a FG for 34-17 with 5:59 in the 4th quarter. Gallegos is working hard for a score, but manages only to set up a 50-yd FG for 34-20 at 2.47 left, which also is the final score.

Iowa (0-4) at #14 Indiana (2-0)(-28)

We made quick work out of the Hawkeyes, the offense fired on all cylinders and DE Horoszowski was outstanding. After Crane returned an interception 50 yds for a score early in the 3rd quarter, we were up 28-0 and cruised easily to a 42-10 win.

Minnesota (0-5) at #14 Indiana (3-0)(-27)

This game was a little more exciting than it needed to be - the score was tied 13-13 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Kaplan scored in the second quarter on a 21-yd run, but Minnesota's Austin tied the score on a 7-yd run early in the 2nd half. Both teams had two field goals each. As the fourth quarter began we had just gotten the ball on downs at our 37, and string together a drive where Kaplan catches an 11-yd pass, Rhodes runs a reverse for 25 yds and Vallery found Bell for 9 yds before Kaplan scored on an 18-yd run. 20-13, Indiana, at 12:20 in the fourth quarter.

On our next drive we used Kaplan to run out the clock, and after wasting Minnesota's timeouts we struck the killing blow with a 22-yd TD pass from Vallery to Rhodes with 2:20 left. That's the final score, 27-13!

This was a close game - for about a quarter. We had a one-point lead, 7-6, going into the second quarter with Donohoe being the recipient of a Vallery TD pass. Then we scored 24 unanswered points, two TDs by Kaplan and one by Bertram, with a FG by Cash early in the fourth quarter for the final score of 31-6.

#14 Indiana (5-0)(-8) at Penn State (3-4)

We start the scoring on our first drive of the game when Vallery hits Rhodes with a short 4-yd pass for 7-0. Our QB was 6-of-6 for 71 yds on the drive. Just before the second quarter begins we add on a 44-yd FG by Cash to make it 10-0. Almost the whole second quarter passes before Kaplan scores on a 6-yd run, and we have 17-0 with 0:52 left of the first half.

As the second half begins, we waste no time as Vallery goes deep with a 59-yd TD strike to Bertram. Touchdown, Indiana, and 24-0! Six minutes later we go long again, and Bertram beat the coverage for a 45-yd TD. 31-0, Indiana, at 6:40 in the 3rd quarter. Kicker Cash hurt a knee and leaves the kicking duties to Trammell, who hits a 38-yd FG for 34-0 five minutes later. Kaplan scores again for 41-0 at 9:21 in the fourth quarter, and the final score is 44-0 after another Trammell FG with 1:29 remaining.

Lost in the noise - what a great day by Marzullo as well! Nice to see Vallery have another big game - he was going ok, but 245 here, 270 there isn't the kind of performance fans are looking for this season.

Our next 3 games are against the other 3 best teams in the conference. Ouch ! We need to win 2. 3 would be neat, but I don't believe that this is possible.

#11 Northwestern (6-1) at #13 Indiana (6-0)(-3) on TV3.

We start well by running the ball, but somehow we get Vallery injured on the opening drive. Marzullo steps in and guides the Hoosiers to a 7-0 lead on an 18-yd run by Eugene England. The Wildcats tie the score on the very next drive thanks to a 73-yd run by RB Baughman. When the visitors then hit a 43-yd FG and score on a 6-yd run to go ahead by 7-17 we're starting to get worried.

But Marzullo plays very well and connects with Bertram for a short scoring pass and we're back in business at 14-17 with 8:26 left of the first half. Unfortunately Northwestern takes one back by running in from 11 yds out and 14-24. Cornerback Bergmann swings the momentum back by returning an interception 73 yds for a touchdown. 21-24, Northwestern, at 3:44 in the second quarter. With two seconds remaining they kick a FG and we head for the locker rooms down by six points, 21-27.

Kicker Trammell kicks a 30-yd FG in the third quarter and it's 24-27, only three points down. The Wildcats scores on an 19-yd run for 24-34 five minutes later, but we start hoping when Bertram returns a punt all the way, 73 yds, for a touchdown. 31-34, Northwestern, with 15 seconds left of the 3rd quarter. The deficit becomes six points again on a 40-yd FG with 10:49 left in the game.

31-37, and Marzullo finds TE Fruth for 19 yds, then Bertram for 20. He completes five of 6 passes for 65 yds and finishes with an 11-yarder to Bertram for the touchdown! 38-37, Indiana! We're in the lead with 7 minutes to go!
Northwestern are called for holding on the return and starts on their 4. They get to their 20 when the fumble away the ball to defensive tackle Schultz! We get nowhere and then Trammell misses the field goal attempt from 43 yds! 2 minutes, 41 seconds left of the game. Northwestern moves to our 27-yd line, converting a 4th and 1 along the way. With 36 seconds left they kick a 36-yd FG to regain the lead, 38-40. Marzullo gets sacked and then intercepted on the last desperation pass. Game over!

Luckily, we find out after the game that Vallery is only lightly injured and will be questionable for next week.

That Trammel was in the game for the FG that would have won the game for us was my fault - the 2nd string punter should have been a better choice.

A pretty gutsy performance by Marzullo -- too bad.

#2 Wisconsin (8-0) at #17 Indiana (6-1)(-4) on TV1.

Vallery is back in the lineup and we have home-field advantage, but going up against the Badgers is a tall order for just about any team in the country. They are absolutely loaded at both sides of the ball and boast one of the top running attacks in the nation, just as usual. Our defense steps up early and holds our opponents from sustaining any long drives. It's not after some 10 minutes into the game that the deadlock is broken, as Wisconsin hit a 38-yd FG to go ahead 0-3. At the end of our next drive we had to substitute Vallery as he had gotten a hit on his bum elbow.

Marzullo engineered a drive where he found Rhodes for 13 yds and Donohoe for 15 to set up a 23-yd FG by Cash and 3-3 at 7:59 in the second quarter. Wisconsin's QB Brady ran 21 yds on the option the following drive and completed passes of 24 and 10 yds which led to a 41-yd FG and 3-6, Badgers, at 4:42 in the 2nd. Marzullo responded right away - on the very next drive he hit Bell for 8 yds before tucking away the ball and running for daylight himself. The Badgers couldn't bring him down before he'd run 64 yds! Wo-hoo!

He got sacked on the next play, but no matter - on second down he found Bertram for a 21-yd TD! 10-6, Indiana, with 1:14 left in the first half. Continuing into the third quarter, this game should come down to the wire as two superb defenses battle away in the trenches. Wisconsin close in to just one point behind on a 35-yd FG at 5:04 in the 3rd quarter. As the fourth quarter begins, the Badgers get to our 36-yd line, but concede a sack for a loss of 7 yds to Schultz and punts. Marzullo start a long drive for 12 plays and 66 yds before Ward fumbles away the ball on their 22-yd line.

Wisconsin attempts a 50-yd FG with 5:03 remaining, but the ball sails wide left. A bad IU drive lasts just three plays and 1:30 before Riley punts it away. UW get a 35-yd gain and attempt a 41-yd FG - but it's wide left, and we have the ball with only 1:46 left and a 1-point lead! Kaplan goes for 7 yds. UW calls time out. Kaplan runs for 5. Time out. Kaplan plows past the left tackle for 14 yds and Wisconsin calls the final time out with 1:21 to go. The ball is at midfield and Marzullo kneels twice before the final whistle. Indiana wins, 10-9!

Our young backup QB stepped up this game. What a performance from Marzullo! The Spartans was shocked early and never recovered. And Bertram - three weeks after tying an 18-yr old team record for most receptions in a game, he goes out and does it again.

We better hope that our passing games stays so great as our running game is horrible.

Nice 9-1 record so far. I am assuming week 15 game will be a simple training game before the playoffs !

Great job 3ric !

Jerry Boyd, a cornerback from Monterey High School in Monterey, California, has accepted your invitation to play for your school next season.

Note: I'm beside myself that we could land Talley. I hadn't planned to bring in a QB since we are in more need of a RB, but when I saw this guy was still available in week 12, I offered a scholly right away - he's scouted as a 92+, and the #91-ranked player in the nation! He's only 5´10 and likes to run "all the time", so he might be better suited at RB. I'd suggest we try converting him to see if it's successful.

No game. The win over Tulsa gave us a 10-1 record, the same as Wisconsin and one game ahead of 9-2 Northwestern. As we beat the Badgers (we three are tied at a 7-1 conference record) the Big 10 title 2040 goes to the Indiana Hoosiers! We get a first-round bye in the playoffs, both UNW and UW qualify as well.

Injuries
RB England, questionable (stretched knee ligament), 5 weeks.
T Stump, probable (high ankle sprain), 2 weeks.

Second round of playoffs

Just a quick note before our first playoff game: WR Herb Bertram has set new team season records in three receiving categories and most likely will set a fourth after this game is over.

#14 Indiana (10-1)(-2) at #21 California (10-2)

The Bears run two drives without getting a first down before Vallery hits Bertram deep for a 76-yd TD. 7-0, Hoosiers, at 11:41 in the first quarter. Cal advance to midfield before punting again, and we score again on an 80-yd drive, punctuated with a 2-yd pass from Vallery to Bertram once more. 14-0 at 4:53 in the 1st quarter. Cal answers with a 78-yd drive where WR Sinclair scores on a 16-yd pass from QB Fitzgerald. 14-7, Indiana, at 13:47 in the second quarter. Both teams punt before we restore the 14-point lead on a 39-yd run by FB Kaplan. 21-7 at 4:48 in the 2nd quarter.

Shortly before halftime it's 21-14 as California scores on a 18-yd run. Then we are shocked as Vallery is intercepted early in the second half and the ball is returned 90 yds for the tying score, 21-21 at 11:28 in the 3rd quarter. The home team now has the momentum and goes ahead 21-28 at 5:04 in the third quarter on a short drive as we had to punt from our own 10. On the next drive we start bad with an incompletion and a conceded sack, but Vallery hits Bertram for 30 yds to get a first down. Next play is another completion to Bertram for 20 yds, and his third catch of the drive three plays later is a 14-yarder for a touchdown and 28-28.

Kicker Cash gives us the lead at 11:10 in the fourth quarter on a 38-yd FG. Then TE Bell catches a 3-yarder from Vallery to make the score 38-28 with 9 minutes left. Cal manages to get a score for 38-35 and Vallery tries to preserve the lead with a long drive but is sacked and fumbles away the ball on the Bears' 21-yd line. QB Sinclair immediately takes a shot downfield with a deep pass - which Dorrough intercepts at our own 28-yd line! Kaplan runs twice for 11 yds before we can kneel to run out the clock.

1Q: 11:41 INDI - Herb Bertram 76 pass from Kurt Vallery. (Howard Cash extra point)
1Q: 04:53 INDI - Herb Bertram 2 pass from Kurt Vallery. (Howard Cash extra point)

4Q: 09:00 INDI - Terrance Bell 3 pass from Kurt Vallery. (Howard Cash extra point)
4Q: 05:38 CALI - Maurice Talley 3 pass from Gino Sinclair. (Richie Blackburn extra point)

ouch... #2 Vandy. Bad memories

ShagVT 09-08-2003 08:46 AM

Looking awesome - so what record did Bertram set in that game?

Alf 09-08-2003 08:58 AM

Total Touchdowns ?

3ric 09-08-2003 09:58 AM

No, that one was total pass receptions.

He also has broken the Big 10 records for receptions and targeted passes in a season. He should break the Big 10 season record for receiving yards in the next game and has a good chance to get the receiving touchdowns mark as well.

He's leading the nation in every pass receiving category and should be our frontrunner for the Heisman, not Vallery.
