OT - New Odds and Evens Contest

Back in the good old days, we had a variety of contests that placed the FOFC mambers into two groups: Odds versus Evens (as determined by your member number... mine is #66, for instance). I was recently thinking about a way to make one of these contests pretty much completely self-executing... and this is what I've come up with.

The poll in this thread will allow each FOFC member to vote once somewhere among the ten options listed. The twist is that there are five separate contests going on simultaneously... and (hopefully) you will be restricted to only one vote from among the five separate contests.

Sunday, I will tally the results - and declare the winner in this thread. The side with the highest vote count in each "round" will receive the score indicated - highest total score wins, of course. If there is a tie in any round, no points will be awarded for that round to either side.

For participants, I have two requests:

-If you post here at FOFC under multiple names, please only vote in the poll with your main name... this game will work much better if it retains its intended integrity

-If you want to post any issues of strategy, I request that you do it in this thread - so we can all see what's being discussed. It's fine to go elsewhere to recruit people to visit this thread... but if you're going to coorindate efforts (suggestin that people come and make particular vote), please do all that within this thread.

If there are any questions of rules or protocol, I will be the final arbiter. I set the poll to be active for 2 days-- meaning that some time on Sunday (QDT) will be the cutoff point. If it's 48 hours on the button, that will be slightly after 9am EDT, but I don't know how these polls really work.

Enjoy.

Hmmm... approaching 20 views, only one vote, and no responses.

Might have sent the arrow right over the target on this one, eh?

Nah. I just had to go find someplace I posted to see if I was odd or even. :-D

I had to come back and read this all through again before I understood it. I just plunged in and voted on the (seemingly) most logical one.

The game pits odds versus evens... if you don't know your member number, you can easily make a post here to see it.

So, our first dabbling with this little game turns out 39 votes in 2 days (including a Saturday) - not too bad.

ROUND 1: EVENS 3, ODDS 2 -- 3 points to EVENS
ROUND 2: EVENS 7, ODDS 3 -- 7 points to EVENS
ROUND 3: ODDS 6, EVENS 6 -- No points awarded
ROUND 4: ODDS 4, EVENS 1 -- 1 point to ODDS
ROUND 5: ODDS 5, EVENS 2 -- 5 points to ODDS

FINAL SCORE: EVENS 10, ODDS 6
Total Votes Cast: Evens 19, Odds 20

A few general thoughts. As I expected there were "tactical inefficiencies" in the game - it was not just a matter of which side will generate more votes, it became a battle of which side will place their votes most effectively. Unexpectedly, the EVENS actually managed to win with fewer total votes.

Of course, one more vote for the ODDS side in Round 3 would have turned the tables. Considering ODDS has 2 votes they didn't need in Round 4 -- there might be lessons to be learned here.

I think I will launch this again, probably with an identical structure. Now that we have run it once, maybe there will be more attention to strategic thinking. You're welcome to continue any discussion here in this thread...

cuervo72 09-08-2003 08:42 AM

Oops, I forgot to vote!

JeeberD 09-08-2003 11:28 AM

Bastard! ;)

cuervo72 09-08-2003 11:42 AM

I was thinking I could wait until the end to see where my vote would count the most, and forgot to come back to it!

KWhit 09-08-2003 11:55 AM

EVENS WIN! EVENS WIN! EVENS WIN!

QuikSand 09-08-2003 12:14 PM

Th renewal will have a more convenient stop time - right around noon on Wednesday. I think the wait-and-see strategy is perfectly sensible... assuming you do in fact come back and vote at the end.
