Some OU Football Thoughts
Why the hell is Mike Lupica writing a column and then admitting he didn't even watch the game. I mean, OU outscores A&M 77-0 but he really wasn't running up the score. It's running up when Steve Spurrier left in his starters at Vandy into the 4th quarter. But the QB was taken at half and their second team was just better than A&M that day and they weren't going nuts throwing long or anything. So, uh, not much point just that Mike Lupica is an idiot and the 22% who are agreeing with him on ESPN are morons but that's nothing new. Gotta love that he's one of the more respected columnists in the game when he won't even watch a game he writes a column on...
What this really is leading to is Oklahoma's line against Baylor this week. They're 52 point favorites! I've never seen a line over 50 before. Anyone else? SI |

Wait until you see the over/under for the OU-Tech game. :) |

Wow, that's worse than the 40 point spread on the Boise State-UTEP game. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if BSU hung 100 on us, so if I had some extra cash I would bet that Boise covers the spread easy... |

The can't even take the heat for what he's saying. He turned his email off Sunday night after Sooner fans filled it up. |

my guess is his inbox and/or server can't take the heat. Still, I think he was off base. I think any "running up the score" complaining is bullshit anyway. It's a game, and the point is to win by as many points as possible. |

I disagree with this notion somewhat. Have some class, especially at the college level. Then again, if you go around demoralizing teams by leaving in your staters for 4 quarters, payback's going to be a bitch when your team isn't so good- people tend to remember these sorts of things. SI |

What is wrong with leaving your starters in? To me, the argument of "running up the score" implies that you are doing something extraordinary to score even more points than you would have. I don't think OU was calling any trick plays late in the game. They benched the QB at half time, and pulled all the starters after 3 quarters. Imagine this scenario: Stoops rests the entire 1st team at the half, and A&M goes on to pull off the most amazing comeback ever, even when now cold OU starters are re-inserted in the 4th quarter when it gets close. What do you think the media would be saying: "Worst coaching move ever. How can you bench the starters, and give them the chance to come back like that?" EDIT: and more class is generally needed by those who can't take the loss like adults. I haven't heard any A&M complaining in this case, but in many blowouts you hear grumblings. |

I agree with the fact that OU didn't run up the score. I'm just saying that some other schools haven't been nearly as courteous *cough*Florida schools*cough*Nebraska* and that there *is* such a thing as running up the score. SI |
Lupica fancies himself as good a writer as Oklahoma is a college football team.
|
Get this, I just learned that Co-Defensive coordinators Venables and Stoops actually called the plays in the 4th quarter. LOL.
|
I thought the funniest part about the Lupica situation were the book reviews up on Amazon.com that were written on the book. "I read this book, and was amazed by all the poor writing Lupica was spewing. I expected him to die down a little at the halfway point, but no! It just kept coming. He's a disgrace." Amazon took all of them down yesterday.
Second funniest thing is that one OU message board has Lupica bleeped out now into *'s. The only other person on the board with censor is Howard Schnellenberger. |
Its funny how he claims we ran up the score when we pratically let them stop us at the goal line at the end of the game.

Off the subject, but this is one of the reasons I stopped playing football. Not that the teams I played on were any good that we had to pull our players because we were ahead by so many points, but football has such little payoff in playing time for the time you put into practice, that it just wasn't worth it to me. I can't imagine playing in college, going through everything these guys do, earning a starting spot, and then getting pulled after a half because your team is that much better than the opponent. Yuck. That's why I played scrimmages like they were real games, because all I wanted to do was play. I dislocated our starting QB's shoulder and knocked him out for the year in practice. Ah, the memories... |
Lupica was on ESPN whining about OU fans being "mean" to him yesterday. The putz didn't even have the class to admit 1) he didn't see the game or 2) that he may have been just a TAD wrong. All he could talk about was how sensitive Stoops is and how much Oklahoma fans were overreacting. I didn't like him before and I dislike him immensely now.
