Family Guy Making a Come Back to TV? Source: USA Today Tuesday, November 18, 2003

20th Century Fox is considering a plan to resume production of Family Guy, a sometimes crude animated comedy that the Fox network took off the air more than 18 months ago.

As many as 35 new episodes could return in January 2005, marking the first time that a canceled series has been revived based on strong DVD demand and ratings in syndication.

Fox Television Entertainment Group chairman Sandy Grushow said a decision is expected soon and called the series a late-blooming phenomenon that may have aired before its time.

A DVD set of the show's first 28 episodes released in April has sold nearly 1 million copies, making it this year's top-selling TV show and the No. 4 television title ever. A second collection, of 22 episodes, has sold 520,000 copies. And the series is Cartoon Network's most popular among adults.

The series was created by Seth MacFarlane, who wrote scripts, drew characters, provided voices and infused the show with rapid-fire sight gags. But ratings faded, and the show ended with a whimper early last year.

WOOHOO!

At least, I hope so....serious doubts to the ability for it to come back as good as it was.

Great news though, it's worth a shot at least!

In the words of Peter Griffin : 'Hehehehehe!''

Best Show on TV, at least it is still on Cartoon Network late at night (11:30pm Sunday-Thursday)

Now, they just have to do the same to Futurama.

I'm excited, but hesitant. You saw what happened when SPIKE brought back Ren & Stimpy . . .

Calis 11-19-2003 03:00 PM

Actually I've never watched the new Ren & Stimpy, is it as horrid as the previews made it look?

Bonegavel 11-19-2003 03:06 PM

I watched the very first episode on Spike and it was more purtrid than the video of the Doctor transplanting monkey-heads.

I would love to futurama to come back, its a shame that show didnt take off, then again fox practically tried to shove 4 cartoons down the viewers throat on the same evening.

Family Guy was great for the first season, then went downhill as it got more outrageous. That's why I quit watching. Hopeully it goes back to how it used to be.

Wow.

FTR, Seth has made is pretty clear on multiple occasions that he's interested in making new episodes. If Seth is there, I'm sure he'll get his crew back together, and I'm also sure he's had plenty of time to stew up some great ideas for new episodes.

You know, that's interesting. I've actually never heard that before. Everyone I talked to either loved it or hated it, never heard that it got worse.

I actually thought it maintained a pretty level amount of absurdity throughout all three seasons, but the show definitely got more polished as they went on.

Guess I just never thought it changed much.

I'd love to see that happen with Futurama, as well, but I don't think it plays as well. I like it much better than Family Guy but I think Family Guy plays to a wider audience (read: lowest common denominator) versus when Futurama was at its best, it had the sophisticated humor that the Simpsons carried around for a few years back in the day.

Then again, in the final tally, I doubt it will happen because it cost a lot more to make than Family Guy, which is somewhat of a one man operation, as opposed to Futurama which was basically half the Simpsons writing staff getting paid extra.

SI

I've heard this before actually. People considered the third season way inferior to the first two. I just got finished watching a lot of the season 3 episodes on DVD and I agree with Calis that the quality is damn near the same to me from season 1.

sabotai 11-19-2003 05:25 PM

I have been watching the 3rd season and it seems to be on the same level as 1st and 2nd. I think it held a pretty consistant level of absurdity too. It was way over the top, absurd, outrageous, etc. That's what made it so funny.

Aesyrqwe 11-19-2003 05:30 PM

all i remember being changed when it came back was megs voice.. shouldnt be that big, but it really pissed me off, just wasnt the same..
