2004 Dallas Cowboys Roster Overview

Quarterback
We are looking forward to having a young quarterback to groom for the future after taking QB Marc Turnbull (9/79) in the 1st round of the draft. Turnbull is holding out right now but we hope to have him signed by the start of the regular season and we will make him the starter from Week 1. Backing him up will be QB Quincy Carter. Carter had a decent year last year (2,644 yds, 12 TDs, 16 INTs), so a feel fine with him backing up the rookie. We released 3rd stringer QB Tony Romo and signed undrafted free agent QB Hunter Bustos, who we almost took in the 7th round. QB Chad Hutchinson will start the season on the practice squad.

Rating: C

Running Backs
Along with getting our future QB we also were able to grab RB Moe Knight. Knight is already at 60/76 and looks to be a solid back. He has great breakaway speed and is a great third down back. We expect nothing less than a Rookie of the Year award for this kid at the end of the year. RB Troy Hambrick, after having words with management at the end of last season, patched things up and decided to come back to Dallas to be the leader in a young backfield. Hambrick had a good year last year (1211 yds, 5 TDs), so we will look to him to help teach our two young backs. Our other rookie, RB Dan Newman, will be the 3rd string back and a special teamer. Newman, brother of Terence, could also see time as kick returner because he has great elusiveness. FB Richie Anderson returns to try and improve on a fabulous 2003 season. Anderson lead the team in receptions (96) and receiving TDs (4). Anderson is a great blocker and a threat coming out of the backfield also. FB Jamar Martin is back to back him up.

Rating: B

Receivers
Both of our 2003 starting wide receivers are back in Joey Galloway and Terry Glenn. Neither are showing signs of slowing and given an improved passing game, both should have big seasons. Rookie WR Kerry Terrell will be the primary backup to Glenn. Terrell was taken in the 3rd round of this year's draft and will be a starter down the road. WR Antonio Bryant will backup Galloway and has great big play receiving ability. Tight end is a position we torn about. TE Jason Witten, last year's starter, is coming off his rookie season, in which he caught only 25 passes. But Witten has greatly improved in the off-season. We are going to start TE Dan Campbell this year but Witten could improve enough to grab the spot back before the end of the year. Campbell is a little more accomplished and well rounded than Witten but Witten is still going to be a future Hall of Famer. TE Jason Dunn was signed away from the Kansas City Chiefs and will mainly be a blocking TE and we see time on special teams.

Rating: B

Offensive Linemen
Our offensive line will be the next part of the team that we focus on in next year's draft and free agency. LT Flozell Adams will again be the starting left tackle. Adams is nothing special but he gets the job done. His backup will be undrafted free agent Brady Singleton. LG Larry Allen looks to improve on what many in the organization viewed as a bad 2003 season. C Al Johnson will back him up. C Gennaro DiNapoli thought for awhile that we didn't want him back but after not getting any offers in the off-season he decided to re-up with us and will be the starter. DiNapoli has awesome blocking strength and has good run & pass blocking skills with room for improvement in both. The right side of the line concerns us. RG Andre Gurode will be the starter but is horrible at best and we will watch free agency for someone better. RT Ryan Young gave up 10 sacks last year, the most on the team but he returns as the starter.

Rating: D

Defensive Linemen
The defensive line probably isn't as good as the one that started the season last year. After a year full of injuries, the line is healthy and ready to wreck havoc on opposing QBs. DE Greg Ellis, signed a 5yr-$25,180,000 extension during the season last year only to have the season cut short by a torn rotator cuff. Ellis is back and better than ever. DT La'Roi Glover, also back from a injury plagued 2003 season (broken clavicle), has returned to form and is going to dominate opposing offensive linemen all season. The new additions to the line are DT Rocky Bernard and DE Kenyon Coleman. Both were on the team last year and both were starters towards the end of the season due to the injuries. However both are unproven as starters, so how they hold up is still a mystery. Bernard played in five games, starting four, and recorded 10 tackles, 5 assists and 1 sack. Coleman played in 12 games and started 10. He recorded 17 tackles, 14 assists, 2.5 sacks and 7 hurries. The backups on the line are a group of undrafted free agents.

Rating: C

Linebackers
Our linebacking core is pretty much the same with the exception of LB Markus Steele, who left us for the Denver Broncos. LB Dexter Coakley will man the strong side, LB Dat Nguyen will again clog the middle and LB Bradie James, who took over for LB Al Singleton halfway through last season, will start on the weak side. James finished with very good numbers. He played in all 16 games, recording 71 tackles, 27 assists, 4 sacks, 5 hurries and 3 INTs. Serving as backups will be: LB Al Singleton & Keith O'Neil.

Rating: B

Defensive Backs
The heart of our team returns in full tact. S Darren Woodson, after deciding against retirement, has returned for his 13th season and he is as good as ever after recording a team high 102 tackles last season. S Roy Williams enters his 3rd season and is almost as good as Woodson and might be the best safety playing by the end of the season. S Tony Dixon returns as a backup for both and the team also added free agent S Antuan Edwards who played last season with Green Bay. Gone is mid-season pickup of last season, S Gus Roberson, who we really liked but he decided to go to Jacksonville. CB Terence Newman enters his 2nd season and looks to improve on a somewhat disappointing first season. He looks great in practice though and has moved into contention for the NFL's Fastest Man. Also returning is CB Derek Ross. Ross is average at best but had a nice season last year. We will be looking to upgrade this side of the field.

Rating: A

Specialists
We took and revamped this entire group. Gone are K Billy Cundiff (St. Louis) and P Oliver Maffett (Miami). We drafted youngsters K Eric Folston and P Keith Hanks, both of whom look to be awesome additions to the team. Rookie WR Kerry Terrell will see most of the time at punt returner, while rookie RB Dan Newman will see the time at kick returner.

Rating: A

2004 Preseason

Week 4: Dallas (1-1) @ San Diego (1-1)
Line: San Diego by 2

Preview
We enter the game coming off our first win of the preseason, a 24-9 victory over the New York Jets. The defense played very well in the game, allowing just 255 total yards. They also added four sacks and four takeaways. We are expecting that great defense to carry over into this game against San Diego. If it does, we should easily win this game.

2004 Preseason

Week 5: New England (3-0) @ Dallas (1-2)
New England by 2

Preview
The defense played another great game last week against the Chargers but we came up a little short, 10-7. We held the Chargers to 203 total yards. We added four sacks and 3 takeaways. We now turn our attention to the Patriots. The Pats are (3-0) in the preseason and have added a bunch of free agents to make what looks on paper to be a Super Bowl contender. We will hope for another great defensive effort and hope that we can find our offense.

2004 Regular Season

Week 1: Washington (0-0) @ Dallas (0-0)
Line: Washington by 4

Preview
Washington comes to Texas Stadium for our first game of the season. Last season we dropped both games we played against the 'Skins. The defense played great during the preseason and in the last preseason game against the Patriots the offense started showing signs of life. If our rookies can perform well this season, we could have some success.

Result
Rookie K Eric Folston got us on the scoreboard first with a 26-yd FG in the 1st quarter. Our next drive, rookie QB Marc Turnbull would take us 60-yds on six plays and the drive would end with a 10-yd TD run from RB Troy Hambrick. Washington had the ball to start the 2nd quarter and on the third play of the drive QB Patrick Ramsey threw an interception to LB Dexter Coakley, that he returned 38-yds for a TD and a 17-0 Dallas lead. The Redskins would finally get on the board with a K Roosevelt Tisdall 43-yd FG before half. Halftime score: 17-3.

We come out the second half and start off a little sluggish. Turnbull would allow the Redskins to get back in the game towards the end of the 3rd quarter with an interception by S Earl Little, that he returned 41-yds for a TD, cutting our lead to 17-10. Washington would start a 55-yd drive at the end of the 3rd and it would be capped off at the start of the 4th with a RB Deuce McAllister 9-yd TD run. After the TD, we go three and out. On the punt our special teams is able to down the ball at the WSH01. On Washington's first play, McAllister is stuffed by S Roy Williams for a 1-yd loss and a safety. We go up 19-17 and that ends up being the final score as we hold on to win our first game of the season. The defense held Washington to just 188 total yards :D. They added 5 sacks, 3 INTs and 1 fumble recovery.

2004 Regular Season

Week 2: Dallas (1-0) @ Baltimore (1-0)
Line: Baltimore by 2

Preview
This will be the first meeting between these two teams. Baltimore is coming off a Week 1 21-10 win over the Cleveland Browns. We used a sack of QB Patrick Ramsey by S Roy Williams for a safety to beat the Redskins last week 19-17. The defense again shined but the offense couldn't get on track. The Ravens feature the league's best defense and we will have to have a great game in order to win this one.

Result
We put together a 80-yd drive that ate up much of the 1st quarter and scored on the first ever QB Marc Turnbull-to-WR Kerry Terrell for a 8-yd TD. The guys would add a 61-yd TD run from RB Moe Knight and lead after one, 14-0. Baltimore would put together a 65-yd drive to start the 2nd quarter that would end with a 15-yd TD from QB Kyle Boller to WR Tim Dwight. The Ravens would get a big run of 39-yds from RB Jamal Lewis before the half but they were out of timeouts and unable to stop the clock and we lead at halftime 14-7.

On our first possession of the second half, Turnbull would be sacked and fumbled the ball. It was scooped up by DT Henry Ford and returned 40-yds for a TD and a 14-14 tie. Baltimore would take the lead later in the quarter with a 20-yd FG from K Anthony Bacon. Turnbull would make his 2nd mistake of the game in the 4th, when he threw an interception to S Ed Reed, that Reed returned 80-yds for a TD and a sudden 24-14 lead. Turnbull would respond leading us right back with a 11 play, 80-yd drive that was capped off by a 2-yd TD to FB Richie Anderson. Baltimore added another FG from Bacon and we got the ball back with 2:05 left, down by six. However, Turnbull couldn't work any magic and we lose this one 27-21. Turnbull has now thrown 5 interceptions in his first two career games. ROOKIES!!!

2004 Regular Season

Week 3: San Francisco (1-1-1) @ Dallas (1-1)
Line: Dallas by 2

Preview
San Francisco and WR Terrell Owens come to Texas Stadium for what should be a great game. The 49ers are off to a 1-1-1 start with undrafted free agent QB Henry Malinowski leading the offense. Our defense is going to have to continue to play good while we nurse along our rookie QB Marc Turnbull. Turnbull has thrown five interceptions and fumbled twice in his first two starts.

Result
San Francisco's first two possessions of the game resulted in K Owen Pochman FGs (24,32). We got the ball with a little over two minutes left in the 1st and QB Marc Turnbull threw his 6th interception of the season to LB Julian Peterson at our own 10-yd line and Peterson took it in for an easy score and a 13-0 lead. Both defenses played well in the 2nd quarter as neither offense could produce any points and we went to halftime 13-0.

The 49ers came out and marched 67-yds and QB Henry Malinowski found TE Aaron Walker in the endzone for a 3-yd TD. Pochman would add a 33-yd FG at the start of the 4th for a 20-0 lead. We would put together an 82-yd drive late in the game, capped off by a 1-yd QB sneak from Turnbull. We went for two and it failed. To little to late, we lose 23-6. Malinowski has come out of nowhere for the 49ers. In three games, he has 650-yds and 4 TDs!

2004 Regular Season

Week 4: Detroit (3-0) @ Dallas (1-2)
Line: Detroit by 4

Preview
The Detroit Lions are off to a 3-0 start for the first time in a long time. The two teams played last year with Detroit walking away a 24-17 winner. QB Joey Harrington tore us apart completing 24/29 for 229 yards and 2 TDs. We will need to play a flawless game as the Lions are averaging 24.7 points per game and have a +5 turnover margin through three games.

Result
Immediately QB Joey Harrington would pickup where he left off last year, driving the Lions downfield for 75 yards on 10 plays. The drive would end with a 4-yd TD pass to WR Scotty Anderson. S Darren Woodson would fumble a punt return towards the end of the 1st quarter and it would be recovered by G David Dixon at the DAL33. RB James Newton would make us pay for our carelessness seven plays later when he scored on a 2-yd run, giving the Lions a 14-0 lead at halftime.

QB Marc Turnbull would make another rookie mistake in the 3rd quarter when he threw his 8th interception of the season to CB Jamie Henderon, that Henderson returned 21-yds for a TD and a 21-0 lead. Turnbull and the offense got going finally at the end of the 3rd and the drive would end at the start of the 4th with a 25-yd TD pass to WR Joey Galloway but that's all we could get as we lose to the Lions two years in a row, 21-7.

Week 5: Dallas (1-3) @ New York (N) (0-3)
Line: New York by 3

Preview
Should be a good battle as we try not to lose our 4th straight game to the winless Giants. The Giants enter the game scoring only 11.6 points per game, while allowing their opponents to score an average of 21.6. Last season, RB Tiki Barber torched us for 222 yards rushing and 2 TDs. In order for us to win this one we will need to keep Barber in check and shutdown QB Kerry Collins and the Giants passing attack.

On our first possession, rookie QB Marc Turnbull leads the team downfield on a 64-yd drive that would end with a 12-yd run from rookie RB Moe Knight. K Eric Folston would add a 35-yd FG early in the 2nd, putting us up 10-0. Our lead was shortlived however as the Giants come right back with a 55-yd TD from QB Kerry Collins to WR Tim Carter. New York would get a 39-yd FG from K Jeff Wilkins to tie it at the half 10-10.

We would fall apart in the second half. RB Tiki Barber would add a 1-yd TD in the 3rd to go along with a Collins 11-yd TD pass to WR David Tyree to lead after three quarters, 24-10. Collins would throw another TD to TE Jeremy Shockey in the 4th before being pulled and replaced by QB Jesse Palmer. Palmer entered the game and threw a 4-yd TD to Carter. Turnbull would get us a quick drive at the end of the game, throwing a 15-yd TD to WR Antonio Bryant in the closing seconds but it was way to little to late as we drop this one, 38-16. In an attempt to jump start our struggling offense, we have decided that we are going to move Turnbull to a backup role for the next couple of games and QB Quincy Carter will start in his place. This move should in now way be looked at as a demotion but a chance to learn the offense a little better.

2004 Regular Season

Week 6: Dallas (1-4) @ Chicago (3-1)
Line: Chicago by 13

Preview
The Bears and the Cowboys meet for the first time in this dynasty. The Bears are coming off a (9-7) 2003 season and have added a bunch of free agents, including QB Peyton Manning. They come to Texas Stadium 13 point favorites and are averaging 22.7 points per game. With Manning leading the Bears offense, we will need a near flawless game to win.

Result
QB Peyton Manning would start the Bears 1st possession at the 11:49 mark of the 1st quarter on their CHI01. Nineteen plays and 99 yards later, he would find FB Terrelle Smith for a 4-yd TD. We would show signs of life as QB Quincy Carter came right back in the 2nd quarter and lead us to a TD on a QB sneak by Carter for a 1-yd score. K Eric Folston would add a 35-yd FG later in the half and we lead at halftime, 10-7.

Manning would come out firing and would lead the Bears down to the DAL21 but CB Terence Newman would put a stop to the drive as he intercepted Manning at the DAL13. Carter would come out and give the ball right back to Manning, throwing an interception of his own at the DAL40 to CB Antoine Winfield. This time the turnover would lead to a TD, as Manning found a wide open WR Wayne Chrebet for a 5-yd TD a few plays later. Carter lead us 55-yds at the end of the 3rd and RB Moe Knight would give us the lead again early in the 4th with a 3-yd TD plunge. The lead was shortlived because after the ensuing kickoff, Manning on the first play threw a 67-yd TD to WR Bobby Wade, giving Chicago a 21-17 lead with 12:41 left in the game. Carter could do nothing on the next drive and we punted. The Bears returned the favor going three and out. We got the ball back with 8:59 to go. It would take Carter just five plays to go 63-yds and Knight would give us the lead for good on a 26-yd TD run. The defense would clamp down and force a punt on the Bears next possession and Chicago would turn the ball over on downs on their last possession of the game, as we win this one 24-21.

2004 Regular Season

Week 7: Minnesota (1-4) @ Dallas (2-4)
Line: Dallas by 3

Preview
The Vikings are off to a bad start, the same way we are. Minnesota comes in averaging 21.4 points per game over their first five games. On paper the Vikings have a much improved roster over last season but so far it hasn't transferred into many wins. If our pass defense can stop QB Daunte Culpepper and WR Randy Moss, we should win easily.

Result
The 1st quarter came and went with K's Eric Folston and Matt Stover trading FGs. On our third possession QB Quincy Carter went to work, completing the first play of the drive to WR Antonio Bryant for 39-yds. Carter would later scramble for 38-yds to setup a 2-yd TD pass to FB Richie Anderson. Minnesota added a second 37-yd FG from Stover after a blocked Dallas punt down close to the goal line in the closing seconds of the half. We still lead at halftime, 10-6.

With the way our defense played to first half, we liked our chances heading into the second. Both defenses would come out strong and both offenses would struggle, as the 3rd saw both teams go scoreless. Things got really good and then really bad in the 4th quarter. We opened the quarter with a Carter 55-yd TD to WR Terry Glenn, giving us a 17-6 lead. Again both defenses would tighten up until Folston added a 41-yd FG with 2:26 left in the game. Looked as if we had this one won, boy were we wrong. QB Daunte Culpepper quickly lead his team on a 5 play, 61-yd drive that took only 1:08 off the clock, as he found WR Ed McCaffrey for a 21-yd TD. The Vikings would try the onside kick and would recover. So with 1:13 left and 59-yds to go for a tying TD, we thought that the way our defense had played the whole game that we could still stop them from tying it up. Culpepper went 3 plays, 59-yds in :23 and found McCaffrey again for an 11-yd TD, it was even up at 20-20. We got the ball again before overtime but couldn't do anything with it. The game went to OT and Minnesota won the toss. Culpepper drove them 43-yds before the drive would stall and Stover would miss a 54-yd FG to win it. We had the ball three times in OT but had to punt every time. With time running out, we decide that a tie would be better than a loss. So we punt from our 24-yd line and P Keith Hanks gets off a nice 42-yd punt but special teams lets us down as McCaffrey returns it 33-yds to the DAL33. A few plays later Stover hits a 31-yd FG to win it for the Vikes, 23-20. As great as we played the whole game, this loss was really dishearting. We are 2-5 and are probably out of the playoff picture.

2004 Regular Season

Week 9: Dallas (2-5) @ Washington (3-4)
Line: Washington by 7

Preview
This will be the 2nd time we face the Redskins this season, with us winning in Week 1, 19-17, thanks to a safety late in the game to win by two. We hate to call this game a must win BUT if we are to have a chance WE MUST WIN!

Result
Things start off bad, as QB Patrick Ramsey takes Washington 61-yds on their opening drive and hits TE Kris Mangum for a 2-yd TD. They would strike again early in the 2nd quarter, when Ramsey hit WR Reggie Wayne for an 86-yd score and a 14-0 lead. We would manage a K Eric Folston 37-yd FG to go to the locker room down 14-3.

We would come out and score 10 unanswered points in the 3rd to trail only by one. TE Dan Campbell caught his first TD of the year from Carter and we added another FG from Folston of 19-yds. Washington would start a drive at the end of the 3rd that would result in a K Roosevelt Tisdall 33-yd FG at the start of the 4th to increase the Redskins lead to 17-13. We however would put the game out of reach with TD drives of 81-yds and 90-yds. RB Moe Knight scored one of those, a 9-yd score and FB Richie Anderson had a 3-yd run for a score. We win this one 27-17.

2004 Regular Season

Week 10: Dallas (3-5) @ Green Bay (5-3)
Line: Green Bay by 13

Preview
Kind of surprising I thought to see us as 13-point underdogs to the Packers, especially the way our team has been playing of late. We are still in good position in our division, as Philadelphia is the leader at (4-4), so we only trail by one game. It would be nice to beat the Packers but they have a great offense with QB Brett Favre and RB Ahman Green. We'll see what happens!

Result
QB Quincy Carter comes out of the gates firing and leads us 65-yds for a K Eric Folston 36-yd FG on the opening drive. RB Ahman Green would pickup huge chunks of yardage on the Packers first drive and Green Bay would score on a 24-yd pass from QB Brett Favre to WR Bobby Shaw. Carter would go 7/8 for 62-yds on our next drive and at the start of the 2nd quarter he would find FB Richie Anderson for the TD and a 10-7 lead. After trading several punts, we got the ball with 5:22 left in the half and Carter went to work. Four plays into the drive, Carter would throw an interception to CB Mike McKenzie, that he returned 18-yds for a TD. Green Bay would force a punt and Favre put together a nice drive before half, that ended with a K Andre Isaacson 38-yd FG. We trailed at halftime, 17-10.

The first half went the way we thought it would. We felt that the offense was able to hang around and if the defense could step it up a notch in the second half that we had a good chance of winning at Lambeau. Favre's first pass of the 3rd quarter would be intercepted by S Darren Woodson at the DAL34 and quickly the defense was responding. Carter would hit several key passes, including a 22-yarder to WR Antonio Bryant, to setup an 11-yd TD by RB Troy Hambrick, tying the game at 17-17. The Pack would add another Isaacson FG late in the 3rd to regain the lead at 20-17. The 4th was kinda WILD! In the middle of the 4th, GB forced us to punt and CB Jamal Burroughs coughed up the ball after an 11-yd return and the defense saw an opportunity slip away as the ball was recovered by CB Jerry Azumah for 17-yds to the DAL42. Feeling certain that the bad break would cost us, the defense stepped up and S Roy Williams would intercept Favre in the endzone for a touchback and kept us in the game. We end up punting and giving the ball back to GB with 2:09 left but we still had all three timeouts. The Packers would get a BIG 18-yd run from RB Olandis Gary but with :40 remaining we forced a punt. Coach Norris told the defense not to let P John Jett get off the punt and whoever blocked it would get the next two days off from practice. CB Terence Newman stepped up and got a hand on the Jett punt and Woodson would recover it at the GB45 with :33 left. The offense would get a DELAY OF GAME PENALTY that moved us back 5-yds but then Carter would hit WR Terry Glenn for 21-yds and Carter got the offense up to the line and spiked the ball with :17 on the clock. Folston about to attempt the biggest kick of his life was true and hit a 46-yd FG to tie the game at 20. We won the toss in overtime but was unable to do anything with the ball and were forced to punt. Green Bay returned the favor on their next drive. We do the same thing again and give the ball right back to the Packers. This time Favre takes them downfield but Woodson comes up with his 2nd interception of the game at the DAL10 to keep us alive. But two plays later, Carter would throw one of his own to LB Nick Barnett, that he returned 22-yds to the DAL29. Gary would break a 26-yd run down to the DAL3 and take it in for the game winner on the next play. We lose in OT, 26-20. Really another tough loss. We have had both Minnesota and now Green Bay beat and have lost to both in OT. Philadelphia lost again, so we still remain just one game back of the division lead, even at 3-6. Oh, we got to Philly next week!

Game MVP: LB Nick Barnett - 9 tackles, 5 assists, 1 sack, 1 INT for 20 yds

Offensive Leaders

2004 Regular Season

Week 11: Dallas (3-6) @ Philadelphia (4-5)
Line: Philadelphia by 6

Preview
This will be the 3rd meeting between these two hated rivals since this dynasty started. Philadelphia is struggling, as are we but if we can find a way to beat them we would move into a tie with them for the division lead despite our losing record.

Result
Not going to be too lengthy here, as it was a horrible game for us all around. We turned the ball over five times and Philly turned it over zero. K David Akers kicked 4 FGs for the Eagles and QB Donovan McNabb threw for 2 TDs in a 33-6 rout. TE L.J. Smith and FB Jon Ritchie both had TD catches and RB Curtis Martin had a TD run. All we could manage in the game were two FGs from K Eric Folston. With our season running out of steam and QB Quincy Carter starting to struggle (3 INTs against Philly), we have decided to let rookie QB Marc Turnbull have the reins again, win or lose. Turnbull was 5/8 for 38-yds late in the game in replacement of Carter.

Preview
The rookie QB Marc Turnbull will be back under center for us starting with this game and will remain there for the rest of the season as we try to let him develop some in what has become a lost season. We will begin to start shaping our roster for next season after this game.

Result
Another day, another loss. Our offense wasn't numerous opportunities to win this game and ultimately it cost us the game, 20-10. K Alvin Mines had two FGs for the Steelers and RB Michael Bennett tore us up with 100-yds rushing and 2 TDs. Rookie QB Marc Turnbull didn't have to bad of a game, finishing 23/39 for 225 yards, 1 TD and 2 INTs. Our running game has been stagnant over the last few games with RB Moe Knight and RB Troy Hambrick sharing the carries. We need to get Knight more involved in the offense.

2004 Regular Season

Week 13: Dallas (3-8) @ New Orleans (8-3)
Line: New Orleans by 10

Preview
Boy what wonders one off-season can do for a team. The Saints were 0-16 last season and this season look to be in good shape off making the playoffs, despite a roster rating of just 4. Last season we had to come from behind in Week 17 to beat the Saints to keep them winless and to keep from being the only team to lose to the Saints. This season however, we can play spoilers again by beating NO and trying to keep them out of the playoffs.

Result
New Orleans fails to do anything with the opening drive and QB Marc Turnbull leads us 98-yds on our first drive for a TD, a 3-yd TD to FB Richie Anderson. The Saints would miss a FG late in the 1st quarter and we lead after one 7-0. We would get inside the redzone three times in the 2nd quarter but twice Turnbull threw interceptions to end the drives. But at the end of the 2nd, Turnbull got us within FG range and K Eric Folston kicked a 24-yd FG with :05 left to give us a 10-0 halftime lead.

Turnbull would throw another interception at the start of the 3rd but the Saints couldn't do anything with it and on our next drive Folston kicked a 43-yd FG for a 13-0 lead. At about the middle of the 3rd quarter, the Saints pinned us down deep in our own territory and P Keith Hanks was forced to punt out of our own endzone. New Orleans took over at the DAL47. QB Aaron Brooks then hit WR Chris Doering for 34-yds down to the DAL13. After losing a yard running the ball, Brooks hit Doering again for a 14-yd TD, cutting our lead to 13-7. After a 12-play, 59-yd drive to open the 4th, Folston hit a 44-yd FG to give us a 16-7 lead. We would force NO to punt but P Chris Gardocki's punt would be blocked by DT Bryant Young and DE Greg Ellis would pick it up and rumble 40-yds to the NO1. RB Moe Knight would then score on a 1-yd run, giving us a 23-7 advantage. The Saints would be forced to punt on their next drive but Turnbull would fumble the ball for us and NO would recover and return the ball 15-yds to the DAL22. Brooks would then find WR Joe Horn for a 22-yd TD (didn't make any phone calls after this one) and the Saints would go for two and succeed. They would try an onside kick but LB Al Singleton would recover it for us, sealing a 23-15 victory.

2004 Regular Season

Week 14: Dallas (4-8) @ Cincinnati (6-6)
Line: Cincinnati by 7

Preview
This will mark our first meeting against the Bengals. Rookie QB Marc Turnbull has started to progress in his development, at the start of the season he was 9/79 and is now 13/79. With him getting all the playing time, hopefully he will continue to develop over the last four games.

Result
The 1st quarter came and went with Cincinnati driving at the end of the quarter. A minute into the 2nd, K Stephen Hudson would hit a 26-yd FG to give the Bengals a 3-0 lead. Later in the quarter QB Carson Palmer would be intercepted by CB Terence Newman at the DAL31. After the turnover, we put together a nice drive which was capped off by a 38-yd TD run from RB Moe Knight. We would return the favor with QB Marc Turnbull throwing an interception to S Victor Green deep in our own territory at the DAL36. Palmer then completed four straight passes with a final one being a 10-yd TD to WR Chad Johnson. Cincinnati lead at halftime, 10-7.

After nailing Cincinnati deep in their own territory on their first possession of the second half, they were forced to punt and we took over at the CIN42. RB Troy Hambrick on the first play of our next drive broke off a 40-yd run down to the CIN2. Turnbull then found Knight for a 2-yd TD, making the score 14-10. The Bengals would add a FG at the end of the 3rd and another at the halfway mark of the 4th from Hudson to take a 16-14 lead. After their FG in the 4th, we got the ball with 4:09 left, thanks to a nice kickoff return from RB Dan Newman of 29-yds to the DAL43. Turnbull drove us as far as he could and with 1:03 left in the game K Eric Folston trotted onto the field to attempt a possible game-winning 44-yd FG. The kick came up short of the crossbar and the Bengals ran out the clock. We lose this one 16-14. After the game we learned that DT La'Roi Glover injured his back and will require surgery to repair. He will miss the remainder of the season.

2004 Regular Season

Week 15: Philadelphia (7-6) @ Dallas (4-9)
Line: Philadelphia by 7

Preview
When these two teams met earlier this season, Philadelphia embarrassed us 33-6. This game is a meaningless game for us but if we can get some revenge for the early loss and put a black mark on the Eagles playoff hopes it would be a great feeling.

Result
We do in fact get our revenge with a 17-12 victory. The Eagles managed just 4 FGs all day from K David Akers. They trailed in the middle of the 4th, 10-9, when Akers put them ahead with a FG. Rookie QB Marc Turnbull didn't panick though as he drives us 61-yds in 4:06 and RB Troy Hambrick scores the game-winning TD on a 4-yd run with :44 left. The Eagles would try to drive but QB Donovan McNabb would be picked off by LB Dexter Coakley to seal the win for us, 17-12. K Eric Folston had a 37-yd FG in the game and Turnbull also threw a 6-yd TD to FB Richie Anderson

2004 Regular Season

Week 16: Cleveland (4-10) @ Dallas (5-9)
Line: Cleveland by 1

Preview
Another team that we are meeting up with for the first time. Cleveland is about as bad as we are, so it should make for an interesting game. QB Marc Turnbull continues to improve. The last I updated you he was up to 13/79 and now just two games later he is a 17/79.

Result
We dominated Cleveland the whole game, holding them to just 11 first downs and just 221 total yards. They got a K Phil Dawson 38-yd FG late in the game but that's all they could manage, as we won 17-3. RB Moe Knight was the man. He had a 2-yd TD run and a 1-yd TD catch to account for most of our scoring. K Eric Folston added a 30-yd FG in the 2nd quarter.

2004 Regular Season

Week 17: New York (N) (8-7) @ Dallas (6-9)
Line: New York (N) by 3

Preview
This will be the 4th meeting between the two teams in two years. We are on the losing end of those games 1-2. We will try to win this one to keep New York (N) from possibly winning the division and making the playoffs. In previous matchups, QB Kerry Collins and RB Tiki Barber have been the thorns in our side, so if we are to win we must stop those two players.

Result
We get the ball first and quickly go three and out. The G-Men drive and miss an early FG attempt. On the first play on our next drive, QB Marc Turnbull throws an interception to S Keion Carpenter at the DAL39. With good field position, QB Kerry Collins would make us play throwing a 7-yd TD to WR Amani Toomer. Again the Giants would force us to punt and Collins would hit passes of 35-yds and 22-yds on their next drive and would find Toomer again for a 2-yd score. We trailed after the 1st quarter, 14-0. We would finally get on the board about five minutes into the 2nd with a K Eric Folston 26-yd FG. We would hold the Giants on their next drive to force a punt. WR Kerry Terrell would take the punt and return it 85-yds for a TD. On our next possession, Turnbull would fumble the ball at the DAL20 and DT Keith Hamilton would pick it up and take it down to the DAL09. A few plays later, Collins would throw his 3rd TD of the game to FB Ron Banks. In typical fashion, Turnbull comes right back and on the first play after the kickoff, he hits WR Antonio Bryant for a 64-yd TD, pulling us back to within four, at 21-17 going into halftime.

With 5:53 left in the 3rd quarter, Turnbull would throw his 2rd interception of the game to S Shaun Williams and Williams returned it 32-yds to the DAL48. Collins then hit Toomer for 25-yds and Barber for another 17-yds, before hitting WR Ike Hillard for a 6-yd TD. The Giants went up 28-17 after three. The defense would step up and for New York to punt on all four of their possessions in the 4th quarter. We got a good drive put together at the end of the 3rd and Folston kicked a 25-yd FG towards the beginning of the 4th to cap of the drive. After exchanging several punts, our defense nailed the Giants deep in their own territory and forced them to punt. P Lonnie Longwell got of a horrible 34-yd punt that gave us possession at the NYG39 with 1:50 left in the game. Turnbull didn't panick hitting WR Kerry Terrell for 10-yds and then finding Terrell again for a 29-yd TD. WR Joey Galloway would catch the two-point conversion attempt to tie the game at 28-28. K Jeff Wilkins won it for the Giants in overtime on a 40-yd FG. We lose 31-28 and finish 6-10 for the second straight year.

Looking back on this season I would have to say that the team showed signs of improvement despite finished 6-10 again. There were three key games we lost that could have went either way: Green Bay, Minnesota and the 2nd New York game. That would have put us at 9-7 and looking at the standings you would see that we might have won the division. So we have a great outlook I think for next season.

Front Office Decisions
We have several big decisions to make after what has turned out to be a bad start to the off-season. Right off the bat we learn that S Darren Woodson and FB Richie Anderson are both retiring. Both were major contributors to this team and will be missed. Also, both head coach Grant Norris and lead scout Jackie Hopper contracts have expired and the team has decided after being 12-20 after two seasons and change needs to be made. We get both of the guys we target, getting lead scout Marvin Meredith and swapping head coaches with Tennessee, getting Louie Hillard from the Titans and Norris landing the head coaching job there.

Free Agency
We must decide the future of a sizable about of guys, probable about 15. As GM, I decide that most of them are expendable and are asking way more than what they are worth. We decide that our number one priority in the upcoming draft will be the offensive line, so we go ahead and resign CB Derek Ross instead of going after a corner in the draft or free agency. As the free agency signing period starts we only have about $10,000,000 to play with. So we decide not to after but one free agent and that is S Aeneas Williams, who decides to come to Dallas in Week 3 and signs a 2yr/$6,950,000 deal. He will replace retired S Darren Woodson.

Rookie Draft
I make what will probably be viewed as the worth trade ever tradint our 5th, 6th & 7th round draft choices to Jacksonville for a 3rd rounder.

1st Round (10): RG Omar Vaughn - Illinois State - we think this kid has a great future ahead of him. Our scout rated him a 27/83 before being drafted and we have yet to see how he looks after training camp because he is holding out. Think Larry Allen type!

2nd Round (10): FB Stan Summers - Tennessee - it didn't take us long to find a replacement for retired FB Richie Anderson. Summers is a hoss in all areas of his game but he has a 98 in blocking strength and a 100 in 3rd down catching. Scout rated him a 59/78 before camp and a 61/78 after, so we got some nice improvement.

3rd Round (1): CB Jerald Blake - Central Florida - not the player we originally wanted here but we need depth at corner and with a little development Blake could fit that bill. No rating really stands out because of lack of development but has a decent punt return rating. Scout rated him a 14/52 before camp and a 18/49 after.

4th Round (10): S Oliver Flowers - Texas - a wasted pick in the 4th. Flowers probably wouldn't make the final cut.

Draft Grade: B-

We were a little disappointed with this year's draft after the first two selections. I made a mistake trading away the three picks for the 3rd rounder, who will turn out to be average at best. Better luck next year.

Late Free Agency
In late free agency we re-sign QB Hunter Bustos, whom we got as an undrafted free agent at the beginning of last season. He now appears on The Green Page along with fellow QB Marc Turnbull. We add another piece to the puzzle in the second week of signing by adding WR James Thrash and to make room for him we released WR Zuriel Smith.
