Should have been an easy call, but it looks like the Chiefs almost made it difficult. I know Vermeil likes to cry and everything, and I respect that because it shows that he cares about his players, team and winning, but getting emotional over Robinson quitting is a little much. If I were Vermeil, I would have fired him midway through the third-quarter of Sunday's game.

The search is one for a new defensive coordinator. They better make this a good one.

Heck, maybe they'll bring back Gunther!

Speaking of Gunther, how was he as a coordinator? Apparently he's the frontrunner for the Jets DC job and to be honest, that doesn't have me thrilled. I'll admit, all i really remember about him is his rather bland head coaching stint.

I'm sure I am in the minority here, but I think Robinson is kind of being scapegoated. It's not like the Chiefs have an abundance of defensive talent.

There should be no tears shed for this guy.

DD and astral, here's hoping Robinson gets named DC of your favorite team.

He isn't the scapegoat -- he was the problem. Rather than impementing a defensive scheme to fit his players, he tried to shoehorn his players into this bend-don't-break scheme. Greg Robinson is a fine coordinator for a team with a load of talent. The Chiefs had the worst defense in the league last year, and added five starters on defense from a year ago -- and Robinson coached them all the way up to 29th.

As for Gunther, I think he makes an excellent DC, just not a head coach. His scheme is very aggressive -- rest assured that Gunther would never have pass-rushing DEs dropping back in coverage or have CBs playing 10 yards off the line of scrimmage on 3rd and 3 against Peyton Manning like Greg Robinson.

Remember when KC was known throughout the league as having the toughest defense? Gunther. Remember when KC was 13-3 (before) with their defense getting credit instead of flack? Gunther.

Yes the defenses in KC were awesome. Of course, the defensive players were awesome, but that's a different story.

Hehe ... looks like I'm prescient. The Chiefs are interviewing Gunther, along with Dick Jauron and Dave McGinnis. John Bunting from North Carolina is also on the short list, along with two internal candidates, who better not get the job.

Vermeil reminds me of the "Understudy/Bette Midler" episode from Seinfeld...the girl that cried at everything..."I dropped my hot dog...sob, sob..."

The problem is assuming the 5 starters the Chiefs added were worth a crap. They aren't.

Vonnie Holliday? He's good for 2 games a year. Ask Packer fans, they'll tell you. The biggest problem with the Chiefs defense can't be fixed by a "scheme" They simply do not have the strength up front or the speed at LB to stop a good running game.

It sets up everything else an offense wants to do. The Chiefs were getting gashed for almost 6 yards a rush the last 6 weeks of the season + the playoff game. They weren't doing good at the start of the season either, but they forced enough turnovers and had enough Dante Hall returns to make it irrelevant.

Greg Robinson is NOT a great DC. It could be argued he's barely average. (though he did coach two Denver defenses to Super Bowl wins) Until the Chiefs get talented players to play in that defense, it won't matter.

The Chiefs biggest mistake this year? Drafting Larry Johnson instead of Nick Barnett, Pisa Tinoisamoa, or Boss Bailey. Instead of getting more help for that defense, they decided to grab a first round backup. I understand they were concerned about Holmes, but the BIGGER concern should have been the horrific defense. It wasn't and they paid the price.

Totally right. The front office totally ignored the defensive need in the 1st round of that draft, when they could have gotten an impact player for this year. Hopefully they don't make the same mistake again (or hopefully if you are a fan of other AFC West teams :D).
