Movie sequels that should never have been

The almighty (no relation to our thealmighty) dollar was the obvious reason for these travesties of filmdom, but which movies, worthy of watching, had sequels that should never have reached pre-production?

The first that comes to my mind is Highlander. Not the greatest movie ever made, but, by itself, it was decent enough to someday make an appearance on my selective list of personal DVDs. Highlander II: The Quickening (1991) is possibly the worst movie ever made, let alone just a bad sequel.

FargoFreez aka fof playa 01-17-2004 10:55 AM

Leprachaun 2 thru whatever. Did anyone know one of Jennifer Aniston's first roles was in this movie?

Noble_Platypus 01-17-2004 10:57 AM

Both of the Matrix sequels.

Raiders Army 01-17-2004 11:00 AM

Speed 2: No Keanu?
I'm beginning to think that the Star Wars Prequels should never have been made.
Same with the Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions, although visually, they were pretty cool.
Alien 3 was horrible.
Rocky V was not needed...especially after we beat the USSR :)

I agree that Highlander II should not have been made, and it may very well be the worst sequel ever made.

Word. Knew dat homey.

Darkiller 01-17-2004 11:01 AM

For once I have to agree with NP.
These two sequels just killed the original Matrix.

Noble_Platypus 01-17-2004 11:06 AM

Alien 3 Raiders Army?? Obviously you didnt see Aliens resurection. It made Aliens 3 look like an acadey award winner.

DeToxRox 01-17-2004 11:07 AM

CADDYSHACK 2!

Ugh.

FargoFreez aka fof playa 01-17-2004 11:09 AM

Blair Witch 2

FargoFreez aka fof playa 01-17-2004 11:10 AM

I was fine with the first Batman and I guess the second wasn't that bad as well (if I remember correctly), but the rest...

Taur 01-17-2004 11:15 AM

Well, since I hate sequels without the original actors I will go with.
1) The Flintstones II
2) Dumb & Dumber II

Both of these Sequels were just cheap ass movies that shouldn't even of made it to TV; let alone the big screen.

Fonzie 01-17-2004 11:27 AM

I wasn't very keen on the original "Grease", but I can understand its appeal and worth. "Grease 2," however, was an abomination.

Senator 01-17-2004 11:29 AM

Godfather IV - The Retirement Home Years.

Fonzie 01-17-2004 11:33 AM

How could I forget? Most of the odd-numbered Star Trek sequels were worthless, along with a few of the even numbered ones. It's so sad to see how that franchise has been run into the ground.

EagleFan 01-17-2004 11:46 AM

Caddyshack 2
Rocky 2 through 5 got progressively worse, with 5 being completely worthless
Anything Star Trek, but that even goes for the originals so I guess that's not really within the topic :).
Die Hard 2, the third one was great though.
American Wedding, the third installment of American Pie, the first two were quite funny, they ruined the overall formula with the final one.

johnnyshaka 01-17-2004 11:52 AM

SlapShot 2...argh!!!

MikeVic 01-17-2004 11:54 AM

I have a feeling The Mask 2 will suck ass. No Jim Carey? Bleh.

Turd Ferguson 01-17-2004 11:59 AM

The Air Bud series.
Major League 2 and Major League: Back to the minors
Karate Kid 2-3 -- I can't stand these movies.

The_herd 01-17-2004 12:04 PM

Teen Wolf 2 is definately worthy of this list.

Sun Tzu 01-17-2004 12:23 PM

From Dusk til Dawn 2 & 3
The Mummy Returns & The Scorpion King
Mortal Kombat II
2 Fast 2 Furious (although one could argue that the entire series should have never seen the light of day)
Honey I blew up the baby & Honey we shrunk ourselves
Jurassic Park III
Any movie involving the words "Tomb" and "Raider"
Pumpkinhead 2
Wes Cravens New Nightmare & Freddy's dead : The final nightmare
Halloween H20
Scary Movie 3
City Slickers 2 (this movie made about par, but compared to the original it was junk)
Tremors 2
Any movie involving the words "Charlies" and "Angels"
Under Seige 2 & 3
Blues Brothers 2000
and last but not least The Exorcist 2 (although 3 was pretty good)

I'm going to end this list now. All of this bad sequel talk is starting to stir up the blood.

Actually, she was in the first Leprachaun, not the second.

Buddy Grant 01-17-2004 12:36 PM

Blair Witch 2
Dumb and Dumbest (Dumb & Dumber 2)
Bad Boys 2
Caddyshack 2
Star Wars - Episode I, The Phantom Menace
Blues Brothers 2000
Speed 2
and of course Ghandi 2: The Vengeance

FargoFreez aka fof playa 01-17-2004 12:37 PM

Yeah, that's what I meant to imply, but it doesn't look that way I guess. My bad.

cthomer5000 01-17-2004 12:53 PM

Star Wars - everything after The Empire Strikes Back
Aliens, Alien 3, Alien Ressurection - just shit compared to the original

Bad-example 01-17-2004 01:02 PM

I will agree with Caddyshack 2...it was almost as bad as the original ;)

Exorcist 2 was actually the first terrible sequel to come to mind.

Alien 3 and 4 were horrendous.

Didn't see Speed 2 but could it really have been worse than the original?

Same with The Mummy.

The_herd 01-17-2004 01:03 PM

Predator II was a pretty crappy movie and destined to suck without Ah-nold.

I know a lot of people don't like Return of the Jedi, but still. Don't you think the Star Wars movies would have ended kind of...strange if they just stopped with Empire? People may hate ROTJ, but considering how Empire ended, I think it's safe to say that it was a movie that had to be made. :)

While that may be true, it does not make ROTJ a good movie. That's where everything went wrong with Lucas... oh my.

ESB was a perfect movie.

One's got to give 'Aliens' some credit at least! It was the only movie where Michael Biehn's character actually survives until the end. Well, at least, until the intro of Alien 3. :D

EDIT: In any case, I'd have to throw my hand down for Predator 2.

The fact that you mention Aliens along side those abominations is unforgivable, well close at least. Aliens is a different genre from Alien, and is one of the all time great action adventure movies. Alien is a sci fi horror flick. I agreee that It is one of the best horror flicks ever made. I think Aliens belongs in a different thread, "The Best Movie Sequels that have ever been".

Some people think that Aliens surpassed the original. I am not in that camp, but I do have a hard time deciding which one I enjoy more.

No, it doesn't make it a good movie. But on the question of if it should have been made or not, considering the situation, it had to have been made.

BigJohn&TheLions 01-17-2004 03:12 PM

Superfly T.N.T.
Shaft in Africa
Graffiti Bridge
Beverly Hills Cop 2 & 3
Rambo: First Blood Part II
Rambo III
Robocop (every sequel, although #1 is nothing special)

I guess I'm a sucker for Robocop II, especially since it was a Frank Miller story. Same for Batman Returns...

I guess I've always thought those two movies were overlooked, and the sequels following after really didn't much justice to either franchise. But...that's just me.

I think Aliens is one of the scariest movies ever made. I couldn't walk into a dark room for two weeks after seeing it. It still scares the hell out of me and the special effects haven't gotten old. From that great era where acting still counted for something, but they could still do decent special effects.

I would say Temple of Doom was an awful sequel, although I really enjoyed The Last Crusade.

Any sequel to any 80's/early 90's horror movie ever made.

:D

HornedFrog Purple 01-17-2004 08:25 PM

I dunno but I hope they never make a sequel to Battlefield Earth. Worst movie ever made. Think of the children!

Anthony 01-17-2004 08:26 PM

blair witch 2.

matrix sequels.

look who's talking too

star wars prequels

teen wolf 2.

Buccaneer 01-17-2004 08:31 PM

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Worse sequel after an original ever made. Imo.

See- these are my problems with these lists (not to pick on HA- there's a lot like this): expectations versus delivered. I mean, I would never utter say, Reloaded, in the same breath with Blair Witch 2 unless I was talking about, say, movie sequels from the past 5 years. But, while Reloaded didn't deliver on expectations, it still had an ok plot and had amazing special effects scenes, which are some of the best ever filmed. BW2, well, that was a waste of film stock. Have some perspective.

Caddyshack 2 by far. I think they use this movie to torture prisoners in Cuba.

sabotai 01-18-2004 08:28 PM

Yes.

tucker342 01-18-2004 08:28 PM

Caddyshack 2

great choice.
it also completely ruins the original for me. I had seen bits and pieces - but not the whole thing - before seeing the Quickening in theaters with some friends (who were big fans of the first). I've never seen so many people walk out of a movie. It was DREADFUL as a movie, but, it was even worse as a sequel...as it completely destroyed all of the cool premises of the first movie.

I've since seen the original, but I just couldn't enjoy it with all the thoughts of the sequel clouding my brain. If there's a worse sequel (and I haven't read this whole thread), I can't think of it.

Cringer 01-18-2004 10:07 PM

I must be one of the 2 guys (the other being Lucas) in america that actually like all the Star Wars movies, including the new ones. :)

timmae 01-18-2004 10:14 PM

no one got Fletch Lives on the lists?!?!?
