NFL Street

Well, after getting the USB drive I wanted, I picked up NFL Street on Saturday as well. My take on the game is still out, since I look at several different things:

Graphics: the graphics are horrible, almost on the level of the PSOne. Well, maybe not that bad, but I have the Xbox, so in comparison to other football games, the grpahics are bad. The animations, however, are pretty good. Overall, I'd give it a B.

Gameplay: the gamebreakers are really what makes or breaks the game. You either love em or hate em. I'm in the camp that thinks the gamebreakers shouldn't last a whole drive. Neither do I think they should only last a play. Maybe a series until you get your next first down or turnover. The fact that the AI, even on the easiest setting, catches up waaaaaay worse than Madden doesn't help. I'd give gameplay a B+.

Sounds: Every dude on here sounds like they're black. Even Peyton Manning :). Seriously, the sounds are okay, and a few times, on the City Roof playground, I thought there were police cars on my street...Sounds I'd give a B.

Solo Play: It's both frustrating and easy at the same time. Some of the challenges call for 2 jukes in a game. Not only do you have to do the jukes, but you have to juke out defenders. Now, this would be easy, you would think, but it's much harder (at least for me) to juke out, stiff arm, or sack another player. My strategy has been pretty good to upgrade my team: Put your development points into four out of your starting seven players, and then get some NFL players to upgrade your team. My DL, OL, and DB sucked, but I picked up Charles Woodson (who helps on both sides of the ball), and Julius Peppers. A-.

Multi-Play: I haven't played anyone else yet.

Overall, without Multi-Play, I'd give the game a B+. Replay value solo is questionable, but I think once I'm able to kick anyone else's ass, it'll be much better. Worth at least a rental, and if you're a fan of the Street series, probably worth a buy.

Sounds like a crap game to me. Thanks for the review... I know to stay away from this one.

I picked up the game this weekend and I have to disagree with your assessment. If your expecting a statistical based game and realistic results, then stay away. It is what it is, a nice game with some fun challenges.

You're missing out.. :) I find this game extremely fun. I don't think the graphics are anywhere near PSOne-type.. take out Madden for PSOne and play it for 1 minute. You'll see a HUGE difference. Every hit, move, etc... looks fluid in Street. I can't complain about the graphics.

I love Gamebreakers, and even getting one doesn't guarantee a stop on defense, or a score of offense.. at least when I play. It's close to a guarantee, but there are times when they don't give me guaranteed points. I play on Easy right now, since I find the game pretty hard... I can now win with scores like 38-20 after three days of playing, so it's time to move up to Medium difficulty. :) But I don't see the comeback code like with Madden. I love the different effects of the environments. Players run better on wet sand than dry sand, slip on ice, etc.. The wall hits are crazy, and there was even a time where David Boston pushed off the wall while being tackled, to score a TD. :D I have so much fun playing this game. I can't complain about the gameplay at all.

The sounds are a disappointment. Some of the disses are pretty funny, but every player sounds black.. they should've added at least ONE white-sounding player. :) The in-game music gets old fast, so I turn it down.

I love this game. Even more than NBA Street. As Raiders Army said, worth at least a rental. It was a sure-buy for me though. The Pickup Game option will provide months of play with one of my friends.. 40 random NFL players to be picked in a draft: I love it. :D

I liked NFL Blitz, and this is a HUGE improvement over Blitz, IMHO. It's a good arcade-y football game.

I read on another board that there is actually an option to turn off the comeback mode.

Raiders Army 01-19-2004 02:40 PM

I don't think that's true. If so, then there's nowhere in the options to do so.

Franklinnoble 01-19-2004 02:46 PM

Sorry... didn't mean to cap on the game so hard... just seem a bit too far-fetched for me. It sounds like they took NBA Street (which is at least somewhat plausible) and tried to apply the same game model to football. I *LIKED* NBA Street, but only for a short period of time. I doubt I'd care much for this game.

From what I understand, you can turn off Computer Assist in some modes, but you can't turn it off in NFL challenge. I will try to check this out tonight.

Rented to game because I was skeptical about laying down $50 for it. Glad I didn't. Beat the NFL challenge in 3 days. Even after you beat the challenge, you still are unable to attempt all the challenges because they do not give you any more tokens. My team had full bars in O and on D and IMO there is little replay value. It is a fun game, but just way to easy and I don't see myself creating teams over and over and doing the NFL challenge more than once.

I think Best Buy is running a deal this week where you can buy NFL Street or Madden NFL 2004 for $100.
