OT: Settlers of Catan
I ran into this game online this holiday season, and bought it for the wife. We've played quite a bit with extended family over the holidays, and are now teaching the kids (my 8 year old won her first game...blind beginners luck, but let's not go there!).
Anybody here play? I picked up the Seafarers expansion game also. The internet sites I've found seem fairly dated. Have I missed the boat on this game too? |
An outstanding game. It's been around now about 10 years I believe. After you've played the regular version for a while, I'd recommend Cities and Knights as a fun expansion for it.

Outstanding game. I've played it quite a bit. One of the simplest to learn and yet most complex and deep designs ever.
I don't know of many sites that do much with the game, as far as strategies and all goes. Which is a shame, cuz it's a classic gem. |
The design, with the multi-tiled game area that is different every time, was a stroke of genius. Really, really good game.
|
If you like Settlers you should also check out Carcassone. It is another German imported game. (Im a game store manager, gotta get some use outta my knowledge)

Outstanding game series. The original Settlers of Catan was a little unbalanced in gameplay...
The expansions are simply brilliant as well. Brilliant! My elder sister would never play with us, she'd just go off and read her book... Well, we got her to play Cities and Knights of Catan expansion this past christmas and now she is hooked and wants to teach her colleagues and friends how to play now. Nothing like playing a 6 player game of this... 30-40 minutes to setup because people need to think...\ Also, here's a fun link or two: http://home.earthlink.net/~mgardner0/ http://settlers.cs.northwestern.edu/ --tim |
I'll second the recommendation of Carcassonne.
The Bible for games like these is at: www.boardgamegeek.com There's a *lot* of information here, all of it contributed by individual users. It could even be information overload to someone who's new to the hobby, but there's a lot of great stuff there on just about any game worth talking about. |
I had a group of friends who got together once in a while to play games, often Settlers, but as of late the only game that anyone wants to play is Carcassonne (myself included). I marvel at the simple brilliance of that game.
I'm toying fairly seriously with the idea of going to the World Boardgaming Championships this summer to enter into their Carcassonne competition. The event, as it happens, is not far from me. |
I just got Settlers of Catan a week ago. I haven't been able to play it yet, but I've read all the rules and set everything up a couple times, it looks like it will be great fun!

There was an old thread about this, but I'm too lazy to go about finding it.
|
This was mentioned somewhere else but you can play online at:
http://settlers.cs.northwestern.edu/index.html Very busy though so often it is hard to get in to get a game. |
I can't believe this thread died so quickly :(

Other games that are great if you like these type of games. There is a Card game called Mag Blast. Its a great great card game. Steve Jackson games, Chez Geek is a great one too. Zombies is another classic. If you like pure strategy my all time favorite is Abalone. Amazing game.

I've got Settlers, Cities and Knights, and Carcassonne. A friend has Seafarers of Catan, Starfarers of Catan, Settlers of Catan Card Game, and Carcassonne Hunters and Gatherers. Another friend has a couple repeats, Carcassonne Castle, and the travel version of Settlers. We are slightly addicted, although I personally have yet to play Cities and Knights or the Settlers card game.
