Jagr not so Capital Anymore

Another High Priced Ranger

Yes, still pending approval apparently, but yeesh!

sachmo71 01-23-2004 03:52 PM

Wow. Just wow.

Subby 01-23-2004 03:53 PM

Good riddance, Puffnuts...

MikeVic 01-23-2004 03:54 PM

I didn't realize Carter was doing so bad.. I always thought he was good when he was in Edmonton.

ice4277 01-23-2004 03:58 PM

un-frickin-believable

Philliesfan980 01-23-2004 04:00 PM

Wow thats amazing. Two of the biggest busts in the league (lately) on the same team with Jagr and Lindros. Their payroll is going to be through the roof.

Maple Leafs 01-23-2004 04:01 PM

Jagr, Lindros, Bure, Kovalev... remember when NHL95 came out with trading, and you used to trade all the best players to one team and put them on the same line?

It's like that, except the Rangers still suck.

Actually, the Rangers are only paying Jagr 24mm of the 44mm left on his deal (4 years remain). Plus he is agreeing to defer one million a year in salary.

So not so bad financially for the Rangers...

Pyser 01-23-2004 04:03 PM

as a devils fan, this sort of thing just makes my day.

the only thing better than watching the rangers sign players for crazy money and then under-perform horribly, is watching them ship those players off and once again excel for another team. anson carter will do well in washington, its just a fact.

if only the yankees spent as unwisely.

But their payroll will now be over $80M, with over $40M of that guaranteed for next year. Keep in mind that the NHL swears there will be a salary cap in the mid-$30M range by next season.

Of course thatwon't be much of an issue since they won't be playing hockey at all next year. :) I agree that could be a problem in the 2005-2006 season. :)

I hope this happens. Otherwise we could potentially be looking at a year or two or no NHL. To be honest, I already follow college hockey closer than the NHL, and a long strike wouldn't help.

Tekneek 01-23-2004 04:39 PM

Carter is streaky, and an underachiever. Kind of ironic that he is going back to the Capitals. He was just making it into the NHL when they sent him to Boston back in the day, it was a fairly big trade that involved Adam Oates and others.

Chief Rum 01-23-2004 04:40 PM

Jaromir Jagr, the Mo Vaughn of hockey. And they both end up in New York!

No, Jagr's a lot of things, but he's not fat... yet.

Jagr's a really talented guy with a questionable work ethic who has trouble staying healthy. Once he got his big contract, he became a drain on the team and almost brought the franchise to its knees.

So in other words, more like the Vlad Guerrero of hockey.

(No, just kidding, I like Vlad...)

timmae 01-23-2004 06:02 PM

so is there any chance at all that jagr might be the playmaker that the rangers need to put this thing together for a run??? Nah, didn't think so either. Sad to have all that money, a huge market, and all star players and be that bad.....

all they could get for the man is Anson Carter? yikes.

TazFTW 01-23-2004 08:35 PM

Jagr shouldn't have cut off the mullet.

Jagr in Pittsburgh with mullet = great player
Jagr in Washington without mullet = eh

Karim 01-23-2004 08:51 PM

Jaromir is no Mario Jr.

The Rangers will still miss the playoffs (I hope).

bbor 01-23-2004 10:39 PM

If the Rangers make the play-off i would'nt wanna play them.

Pumpy Tudors 01-23-2004 11:31 PM

Anson Carter isn't really that bad. It's the RANGERS who are that bad. He'll be fine when he gets back to Washington. As for Jagr, well, there is no sign that the Rangers will put it together. They might finally squeak back into the playoffs, but that doesn't necessarily mean much. The players on that team just don't know how to play AS a team. As much as I hate the Rangers, I really feel bad for Leetch, Nedved, and Dunham (soft spot for a former Devil), because I believe those guys in particular deserve a lot better than what they're getting. As for the rest of the Rangers? Screw 'em.

Pyser 01-24-2004 09:12 PM

hahahahahaha!!!!

9-1 ottawa over the rangers in jagrs first game.

i LOVE that trade!

I don't like hockey but when I saw that score on espn, i just shook my head and laughed.

bbor 01-24-2004 09:53 PM

ahahahah..Too Funny...Go Rangers:)

tucker342 01-24-2004 10:51 PM

You know, I used to really like the Rangers.... but they've become the NY Mets of the NHL....

Vinatieri for Prez 01-24-2004 11:50 PM

How Glen Sather has kept his job is simply amazing. He must spend a lot of time on his knees. I never really liked the guy (the epitome of a cocky SOB). It becomes quite clear why he won so many cups as a coach (having Gretzky, Messier, Coffey, Kurri, Lowe, Fuhr, etc.). Anyone who watches hockey, knows that team has needed defense and goaltending for some time now, but all he does is get overpriced forwards. With that payroll, they could have the best defense in the world and win countless cups, but he just doesn't get it. Can you believe that team can't even get into the playoffs, let alone win a cup. It is mind boggling!!

They deserve it after 1994 and beating my Canucks anyway. If there is a salary cap, they might as well pack it in. And it will be Sather's fault in putting them there.

Anthony 01-25-2004 10:27 AM

I live in NYC, Rangers have been like the Yankees these last several years in the sense that no matter which big-name player they get it just doesn't result in the big prize (well, at least the Yanks can get to the playoffs).

it's not so much the players you get, I'm starting to figure out - but your gameplan. ok, on hockey you can't have set plays like you can in basketball or football, but the strategy you employ, which players are the focal point of the offense/defense, the general setting up of the team - that's all on the coach.

look at the Wild or Thrashers. they are having a lot of success with rosters half as good as the Rangers, and it's because of the passion of their players and the gameplan. in a sport where your best players will get to take a max of 5 or 6 shots (on a really good night), it's senseless to load a team up the way the Rangers are. they need to change their offensive philosophy, then they'll win.

on paper they have the 1997-2002 All-Star team. there is no reason they shouldn't be scoring 4 or more goals a game. i guess real life ain't like video games, too bad Sather never got that memo.
