FOFC Baseball Auction dynasty
BACKSTORY: From all around the world and throughout time the most talented baseball players and managers in the world are summoned to play in a special league made up entirely of the best of the best. The teams were selected by FOFC members at auction and will be placed on the field head-to-head to settle the argument of who has the best team.
OK, so it's not going to really do that, but at least one team is going to get bragging rights. NUTS & BOLTS: I will be running this league in Diamond Mind Baseball. Most of the players will be based on the ratings given in the All-Time Greatest Players disk, which are based on consecutive peak seasons. The other players are based on my estimates of how good they are, based on the data I could find. The parameters for the league will be as follows: 1. The number of teams in the league is still in flux, since a few teams may be dropped for not completing their roster. Don't worry; unlike SOME baseball games, Diamond Mind can do a reasonable schedule for any number of teams for 162 games or so. I'll announce the teams and the schedule when it gets finalized. 2. There is no DH in this league. 3. All teams play at neutral parks. 4. Games will be simmed using the modern era, which is an average of National League teams from 1955 to 2002. 5. Exhibition series vs. Texas
While we're waiting for the auction to finish up, I sent the team out to face some quality opposition. They came up with the Texas All-Time Single Season Greats team. Let me try to explain who these guys are. They're the best single player-seasons in Texas (and New Washington Senator) history based on Keith Hemmelman's roster set. Most of the usual suspects are there - Pudge, A. Rod, Palmeiro, etc., along with some other familiar names and some that aren't so familiar. A very quick scouting evaluation: formidable hitting, but mediocre pitching. They're a good match for us, and we expect some high scoring ballgames.
I ran this series with a 24 man roster (no Montgomery); they had close to 40 players, all active. Let's see who's the boss... |
Exhibition series vs. Texas, game 1
Top of 2nd - Lefty Grove pitching. Frank Howard hits a single. Rafael Palmeiro ground out to third, moving Howard to 2nd. Ivan Rodriguez hits a deep fly to left and Howard moves up to 3rd. Dean Palmer hits a single to drive in Howard. TEX 1, HB 0.
Bottom of 2nd - Ken Bosman pitching. Frank Robinson plunked by a Bosman fastball. He charges the mound, gets some licks in, and the benches clear. Robinson and Bosman are thrown out of the game. Pinch runner Bobby Bonds is caught stealing on a busted hit-and-run. TEX 1, HB 0. Top of 4th - Palmeiro smokes a leadoff homer to right. TEX 2, HB 0. Bottom of 4th - With one out and Steve Foucault on the mound, George Davis draws a walk. Joe Morgan follows with a home run to right, tying the score. TEX 2, HB 2. Bottom of 5th - With one out, Ted Simmons blasts a deep drive to right center that finds the seats. HB 3, TEX 2. Bottom of 6th - Pete Richert now pitching for the Rangers. G. Davis leads off with a double. Morgan scratches out an infield hit, moving Davis to 3rd. Mike Schmidt blasts a double down the third base line, scoring Davis. With two out, Keith Hernandez singles up the middle, scoring Morgan, but Schmidt is thrown out on a good throw by Lock. HB 5, TEX 2. Top of 6th - Gaylord Perry pitching. Julio Franco draws a leadoff walk. With two outs, Juan Gonzalez jacks one to left. It's gone and the score is tied. HB 2, TEXAS 2. Bottom of 3rd - Julio Franco is hit by the pitch. Rusty Greer draws a walk. Rafael Palmeiro gets an infield hit and the bases are loaded. Juan Gonzalez singles through the box, scoring Franco and Greer, with Palmeiro taking second. A wild pitch moves the runners to scoring position. The infield is moved in and A. Rod hits a weak chopper to first. Hernandez throws home, but it's not in time. Palmeiro scores, Gonzalez goes to third, and A. Rod is safe at first. Pudge hits a fly to center, deep enough for Gonzalez to score without a throw. Pudge steals second and scores on a single by Mickey Rivers. That's it for Blyleven, who had nothing, but the damage has been done. TEX 6, HB 0. Top of 4th - Dick Donovan toiling for Texas. Now that my team has warmed up against Texas, and Bishop has announced the latest auction results, I can figure out a schedule and give you the rest of the rules. It looks like there are going to be 16 teams, and I've divided them into four divisions:
East Division: BishopMVP, Ramzavail, vtbub, Isiddiqui Midwest Division: Bearcat729, Coffee Warlord, Honolulu Blue, TheLionKing West Division: Chief Rum, Oykib, Sooner333, Vince International Division: Booj, Maple Leafs, ntndeacon, Suicane75 SCHEDULE: Teams will play 14 games against each team within their division, and 10 games against the other teams, for a total of 162 games. PLAYOFFS: Eight teams will make the playoffs - the four division winners and the four teams with the best records that didn't win their division. The division winners will get the top four seeds based on their records (I'll cover the tie breakers later). The first round will go like this: #8 team vs. #1 team #7 team vs. #2 team #6 team vs. #3 team #5 team vs. #4 team All series in the first round will be best-of-five, with the higher seed playing Games 3, 4, and 5 at home (as necessary). The second round will go like this: #4 team vs. #1 team #3 team vs. #2 team Both series in this round will be best-of-seven, with the higher seed playing Games 1, 2, 6, and 7 at home (as necessary). The championship round pits the #2 team against the #1 team. It will be best-of-seven, with the higher seed playing Games 1, 2, 6, and 7 at home (as necessary). TIE BREAKERS: Regular season - A tie for a division title will be broken by a one game playoff. The home team will be determined by a coin flip. Seedings - The following tie breakers will be used in this order until the tie is broken: 1. Head-to-head record (regular season) 2. Best run differential (regular season) 3. Fewest runs allowed (regular season) 4. Most runs scored (regular season) 5. Fewest errors (regular season) 6. I also set my lineup based on rest/rust factors and injuries. How are they handled in the game? Are we using minor injuries, or are players constrained to the number of games they consistently played IRL?

Also, I dont have DMB, but I'm figuring that the number after spot starter is the percentage of games that the player will play (i.e. a player set to 10% will start every tenth game). Is the same true for pitchers?

Actually, HB, that's close enough for me. I don't want to be that regular. I just wanted to make sure that the percentages were overall chances to start rather than something relating to the usage patterns of the league or something.

I don't want you to think I've abndoned this, but I just don't think I can do a better managing job than the computer, especially without seeing the converted stats for my Negro Leaguers. Just make sure Ted Williams is batting in the 3 spot and Mathewson, Pedro Martinez and Satchel Paige are starting.

Bishop: The computer manager insisted on putting Ted in the #4 spot. Per your orders, I moved him up to #3 with Hack in the cleanup spot vs. lefties and Larry Walker vs. righties. Chief Rum: The default manager tendencies should be fine. The guys who can run will run, the guys who can bunt will do so, etc. No need to adjust your lineup. If you guys should happen to do some trading while I'm gone, just post your adjusted lineup here and I'll make sure to get those changes in. I plan to run the first set of games on Sunday, Feb. 22, but I might have to delay them until Monday. Isiddiqui's bold choice of having only 6 pitchers might pay off, since all six are solid or better. However, should one of them be felled by injury or ineffectiveness... the results could be gruesome. Bishop figures to have the best staff in the league, but the offense is subpar for this group. Vtbub can't compete in such fast company, as neither their hitting nor pitching measures up. Midwestern Division: Honolulu Blue 84-78 Bearcat729 83-79 TheLionKing 83-79 Coffee Warlord 72-90 HB and his manager seem to believe that power and walks are the best way to fuel an offense. They may be right, but the team average is likely to be disappointing. The pitching and defense should be average or above. Bearcat's team doesn't stand out in any category, but they also have no major weaknesses. In this division, that might be enough. TLK's hitters are good enough to lead them to glory, but the pitchers are a little vulnerable to the long ball, and that might be their downfall. The Warlordians' staff doesn't match up to the others around the league, and that's likely to cause them to have a long season. West Division: Oykib 84-78 Chief Rum 83-79 Sooner333 82-80 Vince 82-80 This figures to be the most competitive division with any of the four teams able to take the division. Oykib's eclectic mix of players from around the world has just enough oomph to lead them to glory. A high OBP looks to be the team highlight. The Rum Runners have the most power in the league and they'll score more than their share of runs. However, the staff is a little wild and might cause them to be just short here. Sooner and Vince are rated equally here and both have similar offenses that will get on base some but are a little short on power. Sooner's staff figures to give up more hits, fewer walks, and fewer home runs than average. Vince's staff is unexceptional in the major categories. International Division: Maple Leafs 92-70 ntndeacon 76-86 Suicane75 76-86 Booj 74-88 This rates as the most UNbalanced division with one great team and the rest unimpressive at best. Maple Leafs should lead the league in scoring as they have it all - a good average, great OBP, lots of power, and even some speed. Their pitching staff figures to be in the top half of the league. Overall they look best. As for the rest of the division, ntndeacon's offense and defense look to be equally substandard, Suicane will have a little trouble scoring runs and preventing the same, and though Booj has a pretty good pitching staff, the offense looks to be a little wanting. ======================================== Playoffs 1st round: (8) TheLionKing vs. (1) Maple Leafs This isn't a great matchup for TLK as Maple Leafs does the same things they do, only better. Maple Leafs in 4. (7) Chief Rum vs. (2) Ramzavail Ramzavail should keep CR's power in check and prevail here. Ramzavail in 4. (6) BishopMVP vs. (3) Oykib Bishop's pitching and defense should save the day, so I'm picking a mild upset. BishopMVP in 5. (5) Isiddiqui vs. (4) Honolulu Blue It should be a close series between evenly matched teams, but Isiddiqui should take it. Isiddiqui in 5. Playoffs 2nd round: (6) BishopMVP vs. (1) Maple Leafs If any team can keep Maple Leaf's offense in check it's Bishop. I don't think they can do it. Maple Leafs in 6. (5) Isiddiqui vs. (2) Ramzavail This is a coin flip, but I'm going with the home team here. Ramzavail in 7. Championship: (2) Ramzavail vs. (1) Maple Leafs The two best offenses in the league square off. This should be another tight series, Maple Leafs' first real test. FOFC Greatest Teams: The season
As previously announced, 16 great teams of great players take the field in head-to-head action starting right now.
NUTS & BOLTS: The divisions are as follows: East: BishopMVP, Ramzavail, vtbub, Isiddiqui Midwest: Bearcat729, Coffee Warlord, Honolulu Blue, TheLionKing West: Chief Rum, Oykib, Sooner333, Vince International: Booj, Maple Leafs, ntndeacon, Suicane75 Teams play 14 games against teams in their own division, and 10 against the other teams - a total of 162 games. The full schedule is here - sorted by date, or sorted by team. Eight teams will make the playoffs - the four division winners and the four others with the best records. A couple observations - What the heck happened to my pitching? ;) Also, you have Paige listed as leading the league in shutouts, but on my roster he has none. Tom Seaver is the one with 2. Interesting that Buck Ewing has 30 K's already. Most he had in a season was 32. Overall, looks great, if only my team can start winning some more. |
A bunch of close loses really hurts but Im confident Helton & Strawberry will pick it up, and Carlton and Eckersley, they have to get better, right? Right? Please god let them get better.
