Things I Didn't Know

No, this isn't the follow-up to Skydog's smash hit album. :)

I just read that Andrea Mitchell of NBC news is married to Alan Greenspan. I had no clue.

I was similarly clueless about the fact that Leslie Visser is married to Dick Stockton, although I found out about that a few years ago.

So, what didn't you know that shocked or surprised you when you found out about it?

corbes 02-04-2004 09:16 AM

When John Mayer told me, "there's no such thing as the real world."

I was blown away. I had no idea.

Butter 02-04-2004 09:17 AM

When Captain Kangaroo died, I was doubly shocked because I thought he already had died.

rkmsuf 02-04-2004 09:17 AM

There actually IS always room for Jell-o...

corbes 02-04-2004 09:18 AM

also,

"a lot" is always two words, and is never spelled, "alot". I just learned that this year, to my obvious embarassment.

Ksyrup 02-04-2004 09:19 AM

I'm glad I made that question purposely open-ended. This could be an entertaining thread.

JonInMiddleGA 02-04-2004 09:21 AM

I was just thinking "this thread could get really really really long".

Butter 02-04-2004 09:24 AM

The red zone IS for loading and unloading of passengers only. There is no stopping in the WHITE zone.

Fascinating.

rkmsuf 02-04-2004 09:25 AM

Caddyshack II WAS one of the worst movies ever. The rumors were true...

Chubby 02-04-2004 09:30 AM

there are some crazy people that go bonkers if I'm out of Frosty Paws...

corbes 02-04-2004 09:38 AM

I didn't know you were allowed to take out your breast on live television. Think where we could all be if we had known this earlier?

corbes 02-04-2004 10:18 AM

...that a primary can have odd polling results.

Poli 02-04-2004 10:25 AM

When I went to boot camp, I didn't realize we'd be in such an urban area. When they said it was in Great Lakes, IL, I thought:

"Illinois = corn fields" I'll be in the middle of nowhere for bootcamp. Probably won't be a whole lot of people there either.

Wrong. It was culture shock city.

I also assumed that the dungaree uniforms that were issued to me were for boot camp use only. I thought sailors went to sea in their dress blue and white uniforms. After all, that's what you see them leave and return from ports in.

Again, when I left boot camp I was in for a surprise.

Here's something that many people remain unaware of thanks to inaccurate portrayals by the media and entertainment industries: schizophrenia is not another term for multiple personality disorder (which, in fact, has itself been replaced by the term "Dissociative Identity Disorder").

They are, in fact, very different disorders, with schizophrenia featuring serious thought disorders (e.g., delusional beliefs, neologism creation, "word salad" speech generation, tangential thoughts, hallucinations, etc.) and a supposed "split" (which is where the "schizo" comes from) between cognition and emotion (they often feature flat affect). These people are psychotic, in the clinical sense of the word, but do not have multiple personalities.

Schizophrenia literally means "split" (schizo) and "mind" or "thinking" (phrenia). Some less astute folks took the "split mind" definition and jumped to all sorts of inaccurate conclusions about the term schizophrenia.

corbes 02-04-2004 10:36 AM

When I found out that the whole world could hear all of my thoughts, and was laughing at them, that bothered me.

Honolulu Blue 02-04-2004 10:36 AM

I knew about Alan & Andrea. It gives "economic stimulation" a whole new meaning.

Anyway, you could fill whole universes with what I don't know. I'm not sure I know anything about anything anymore.

Blade6119 02-04-2004 10:37 AM

Bill Murray was the original first choice for Forrest Gump

When I realized I knew everything, that was kind of a letdown.

No it wasn't. At least that's not what your thoughts were saying at the time.

Of course, we all had a good laugh at that!

Easy Mac 02-04-2004 10:43 AM

Bet you didn't know it would be a letdown.

The red zone has always been for the immediate loading and unloading of passengers. There has never been any stopping in the white zone.

Perhaps there was a missing word at the end...like 'lots' or 'profusely'...

Well, it's the only sensible solution. If done properly, there really isn't any risk involved.

In the spirit of Ksyrups original post:

Ron Jeremy, Pornstar:

He was a former high school school teacher.

According to Jeremy in an interview with "Time Out New York" magazine, in order not to upset nor alert executives at Disney, Jeremy's role as Blisterface in the children's series "Bone Chillers" (1996) was kept secret. Producers disguised Jeremy so much that he is unrecognizable, which helped them from alerting pro-family studio executives that a pornstar was on their payroll.

He holds a master's degree in Special Education.

Is quite a talented piano player.

Now this is something I didn't know!

McSweeny 02-04-2004 12:23 PM

all i know is that i don't know nothin'

and a large cash sum to the first person to get that reference

Ksyrup 02-04-2004 12:46 PM

Well done, Fritz! Now THAT's what I'm talking about.

rkmsuf 02-04-2004 12:52 PM

All right...didn't realize this...

Apparently, Tom Cruise has dyslexia. I heard that whenever he studies his lines for a movie he has them recorded onto an audio cassette so that he can play them back aloud instead of reading them. This may account for the fact that he has never appeared on Saturday Night Live, a show that relies heavily on the ability of its actors to read cue cards on live television.

QuikSand 02-04-2004 12:58 PM

I learned something of a similar nature here at FOFC, to my modest embarassment.

When you have a dramatic shift in an entire circumstance, the term for what you've undergone is a "sea change." Until about a year or two ago, I thought the term was "C change" (and was originally some sort of reference to music, which still makes at least as much sense to me).

I knew that, but like you, I have no clue what it really means.
