Has anyone seen Kentucky Fried Chicken's latest attempt to gain back a bunch of the business it's lost over the past decade? They went with KFC, but that didn't help. The latest is, Kitchen Fresh Chicken.

About a month ago, I read an interview with the recently-hired CEO about the company's struggles. At the time, KFC was taking heat for suggesting that its chicken was "healthy." Now, this is the latest marketing gimmick to get people who are either trying to eat low fat or low carb, to eat fried chicken.

I guess they've got to try something, but do they really think when the public sees KFC, we're going to think Kitchen Fresh Kitchen, instead of Colonel Sanders and Kentucky Fried Chicken?

I saw this commercial last night, and I just about kicked the TV. I was pissed when they stopped calling it "Kentucky Fried Chicken" and now this... what a bloody joke.

It's still fried chicken. Changing the bloody name only insults the intelligence of the general public.

Seems to me KFC's biggest problem is that their chicken is nasty. I'm sure I wasn't as discerning as a kid, but their chicken has really gone down the tubes. Every once in a while I get a craving for fried chicken and go to a KFC, and every time I regret it - too greasy, not very tasty. The breading and skin are still good, but the rest of it - yuck.

I go there for the popcorn chicken. If they sold that stuff at Jack In The Box I'd never eat at GayFC again.

Why do you think the company is now "KFC" instead of Kentucky Fried Chicken? The same reason that you no longer can buy Sugar Pops, Sugar Frosted Flakes, Super Sugar Crisp, etc.

I used to work at Kentucky Fried Chicken back around '88. Trust me, it is not health food. And the healthier they try to make it, the worse it tastes. Remember the delicious gravy? Know why it now tastes like dirt? They used to make it from the leftover sludge from the pressure cooker/frier. They stopped because it was unhealthy. They now throw it out.

By the way... I can't stand the food there. Best chicken: Popeye's! Best biscuits: Churches.

Isn't most all chicken prepared in a kitchen? I mean, sure, you can grill one over a campfire...but from barnyard fresh to the most frozen, leathery piece of meat available, most chicken is cooked in a kitchen. :rolleyes:

I thank God every time I go to a military installation with a Popeye's. That means I never even have to consider KFC.

I do admire KFC for one thing: it can clean out my entire system within 90 miuntes, guaranteed.

Didn't KFC try an "Atkins friendly" type campaign only to have it yanked after they got complaints?

I think the low-carb angle is exactly what they ought to be pushing hard right now. A big greasy plate of fried chicken and cole slaw and vegetables makes for a pretty low-carb fast food option... and they are missing the boat there, I think. While the burger joints are trying to sell you a hamburger on lettuce, these guys really don't have to change their main product to fit the hottest trend in dieting... why don't we hear about that?

Because the fried chicken is not low-carb. Rotisserie chicken is, though. But the breading on the fried chicken is not low-carb at all.

I think that was the ad campaign that they got dinged for - they gave a carb figure (11 grams maybe?) but also threw out some thing about it being "healthy." That's what drew the fire.

You know, I just don't get this low-carb fad. I thought a low-carb diet would be dangerous (because many of the higher carb foods are great for you), compared to a low-fat, low-chloresteral (eliminating trans fat) diet. I even hear that the orange producers in Florida are hurting because of this low-carb nonsense. That just can't be right. What am I missing?

For me, high carb foods are addicting, so I stay away from them. The bread, pizza, and juice industries are all deeply concerned about the diet and how many people are foregoing their products. In fact, the Florida juice industry has hired a law firm to determine whether orange juice is being libeled in any of these low-carb books on the market.

I don't know what the long-term effects will be, but I do know that (a) I lost 50 pounds; (b) my cholestrol levels are all in the normal range; (c) my doctor was fine with it; and (d) I no longer have the cravings I had before. I continued to gain weight the other way, so for me, the associated health risks from a low-carb diet, to the extent anyone has been able to prove anything (and I haven't seen much evidence one way or the other) are no greater than if I continued to gain weight while trying to diet like everyone says I'm "supposed to."

they're food has caused more cases of food poisoning than any other fried chicken chain. I'd post the link but I can't find the article anymore. After getting food poisoning from a popeyes in troy , NY not once but twice in a 6 month period (we only discovered the connection to popeyes after the second incident) I went looking for info to see if this was a trend. The article I found placed popeyes almost 40% more likely than any other chain to serve old, mishandled or infected products. And unfortunately its not teh chicken on most occasions. Their "dirty rice" and rice and beans were most often the suspects as the chain tends to leave the containers of leftovers open in the coolers for days at a time.

KFC might not be the best tasting, but I'll be damned if I ever eat at a popeyes again.

I've eaten Popeyes many times. I've never been sick.

Grandy's. That's the best fried chicken around. Well, I don't even know if that chain is still around. It was in Texas back when I was a kid and living. Absolutely fabulous food.

Just checked the internet. They still exist, basically in the south. Good eats.

My girlfriend found a little fried treefrog wedged in a KFC chicken wing when she was 14. Her family settled out of court for 10K.

...and thats my KFC story of the day!

note to self...bring fried treefrog along on next KFC visit...

I can see bashing KFC, but suggesting Popeye's as an alternative? I tried it once, and it was by far the most disgusting food I have ever been served. How can you eat that crap?

THe only thing I eat is the spicy chicken, and mashed potatoes. Screw some rice an beans.

One word....Bankrupt....

We had a Grandy's right across from my high school, I should have gone there more often, but the Western Bacon Cheeseburger and Carl's Jr. were closer right across the street, and much more tempting. Then everyone got old enough to drive and it became "uncool" to walk to lunch.

Popeye's fried chicken is pretty bad IMO... Way too dry. Their spicy chicken sandwich is pretty amazing though.

KFC actually has one of the healthiest fast food options around. If you get their chicken sandwich (not sure what they call it, but its not breaded or fried) without the mayo and mashed potatoes its like ~10 grams of fat total.

I like the KFC BBQ chicken sandwiches, but that's the only thing I ever order there. And not very often.

You know, the only thing I really seem to enjoy on occasion from KFC is the cole slaw. Don't know why. Can't stand any other place's version for some reason.

I used to love Hooter's coleslaw when I was in the States. Only reason I went there of course...

In defense of KFC: Popcorn chicken rocks imho (although I have to admit loving pretty much the entire KFC range) ... that being said I'm an old git and trying to live healthily* now so I haven't had any in around 6 months ...

*As healthily as a games programmer who only sleeps 5 hours a day and excercises by walking to work can .... ;)
