PHILADELPHIA -- The Miami Dolphins have acquired quarterback A.J. Feeley from the Philadelphia Eagles for a 2005 draft pick, according to a pair of published reports.



The Sun-Sentinel and the Philadelphia Inquirer reported the deal Saturday, with the Inquirer adding the Eagles will receive a second-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.



Under NFL rules, the trade cannot become official until the trading period begins March 3, the same day as free agency. According to the Sun-Sentinel, the Dolphins are in the process of negotiating a new contract with Feeley, who was scheduled to become a restricted free agent.



The 26-year-old Feeley, a fifth-round pick out of Oregon in 2001, went from third-string quarterback to a fan favorite in Philadelphia when he replaced the injured Donovan McNabb and Koy Detmer and won his first four starts late in the 2002 season. The Eagles went 4-1 in their final five regular-season games that year with Feeley as starter.



According to the Sun-Sentinel, Feeley showed enough promise in his 2002 stint as starter that the Dolphins decided to pursue trading for him rather than waiting for other quarterback options such as the Washington Redskins' Patrick Ramsey or the Houston Texans' Drew Henson.

Can anyone really distinguish the two?

Stupid move for alot of reasons.

One, they seriously over-paid for him

Two, absolutely no reason to rush to get him with the possibility of other QBs becoming availiable

Three, he's not much more proven than Drew Henson who they could of got for around the same price.

I agree - puzzling (a second round pick is a little steep and they probably could have waited). But they did get a decent backup. Definitely means Fiedler or Griese is gone. I guess Heather Mitts will be soaking up the sunshine, though. Might be a reason to head south for the winter.

I don't think Ramsey is really available. Although I really don't think Feeley is the answer for the Dolphins...

In all honestly it looks like there gonna settle for Fiedler for another year, drop Greise and replace him with Feely. Then draft a QB, probably Philliup Rivers. Still I dont like wasting a draft pick on a 3rd string QB.

The report is wrong because the Dolphins don't have a second round pick.

i just noticed its a 2005 pick, not 2004. that makes it marginally better, but not really.

Dammit how many times are they gonna give away one of their top two picks? I cant remember the last time the Dolphins had a first and second round pick in the same year. A second round pick for Feely, that cant be real.

And this is going to help the Dolphins how? Who in the Dolphin front office actually thinks AJ Feeley is any better than Griese or Fiedler? Put all three of them together you still wouldn't have a franchise QB.

I think people are looking at this the wrong way. Feely is not supposed to replace Fiedler, he's supposed to replace Griese, who will be cut because he's due a substantial roster bonus. However giving up a second round pick for him is stupid beyond belief.

Rivers who will be drafted with their 20th pick will be Fiedler's eventual replacement. Apparently the Dolphins think they can win with Fiedler next season.

I'm a fan of the Cowboys living in South Florida, and I can tell you this will not go over well with the fans down here. I think a lot of folks were hoping the Fins might pick up someone like Drew Henson as their QB of the future. I can hear a whole new flood of "I want Dave Wannstedt's head," on the Sports Talk shows. :D

Those fans would be pretty dumb then because Wannstedt wasn't behind this.

I'm sure he had some say in the matter.

Not so sure that they are just looking to replace Griese or Fiedler. Looks like the deal is for approx. 5 years and 18 mil. (and a 5 million signing bonus) Thus each year breaks down to about 3 million plus (3.7?), a lot more then anyone other than the Redskins would pay for a backup.

I like Feeley, but agree with most posters here...he doesn't appear to be much more than a backup. Its also hard to believe the Fins had to give up a high round pick and this much money to grab a THIRD stringer (Koy Detmer is Philly's #2)...POOR MOVE...

Are you kidding me? Are those numbers (contract) that you're talking about above refer to Griese's contract or Feeleys potential deal?

What are your sources? So help me God if this is true. I couldn't even defend such stupidity, When will this circus end!?!?!?!?!?!

I reading now on ESPN.com that its a conditional pick for the 2005 draft, so it isn't neccesairly a second round pick. Thats a little better but not much. I won't believe the Dolphins would throw that much money at Feely till I see it. They were already having cap problems before this alleged deal. I dont know where they found the money to pay him that much. There is still hope.........

Unfortunately, those are the estimates I've heard (not completely sure they are fully accurate) for Feeley's contract...

With a 2nd round pick used, I can't believe Feeley was brought in just for a backup. If it was - then its terrible. They could have gotten Brunell with that, I would think. If that contract is right, then Fiedler is clearly on his way out (although he should be regardless). pj, I feel bad for you, but good for me. Why your team continues to squander the rapidly closing window they have (the defense has been good for a number of years) and refuses to go after a franchise QB keeps me puzzled.

based on the fiedler deal a few years ago, the deal probably looks something like

A deal like that would give the fins 3 years to see what he has. If they like him, The last year (or two) would be renegotiated.

What about Kurt Warner? he still has something left in the tank doesn't he?
Dolphins could've pursued him when he most likely would've became available.

I think Warner is on the road to becoming Chris Chandler; might play ok when he isn't hurt, but when isn't he hurt anymore?

As for Feeley, give the kid a chance. Coming from the Dolphins is easy to jump on this as a blunder but we've been surprised before.

The source for the contract is 610 AM in Philadelphia. They are reporting Feeley's deal to be 5 yrs 18 million. The only link I have to this info is at Finheaven.com

Hmmmm.......... sounds better than 3 mil + a year. If Fritz is right and its a backloaded contract it will be backup money. That plus a third round draft pick are worth getting the next Jake Delholm (wishful thinking continues).

That should throw up a red flag right there, not to say that a deal isnt in the works but relying on WIP for news is like relying on Star Jones for diet advice.

As an Eagles fan, this is exactly what Reid wanted the day he drafted Feely, groom him for a couple of years, mentor him and get a high pick for him, pretty smart. That being said I'm not sure he's proven enough to warrant a 2nd rounder, but hell, I'll take it.

QBs that are better or more likely to be better than Feeley that could be gotten with a 2nd rounder or less -

Warner and Brunell would of cost a ton more than Feeley. Ramsey porbably isn't available. The Dolphins arn't gonna win with Jay Fiedler, they havn't in the past and they wont in the future. Feeley is a young kid with alot of upside. Of all the guys on your list I would only take Warner over Feeley and you probably wouldn't have a chance in hell of getting him.

So what's all the fuss about trading for Ace Frehley?

He's a drunk. But at least he's not Peter Tom Wilcriss.

John Clayton is reporting that the Dolphins have given Fiedler's agent the go ahead to deal with other teams, so it looks like they're positioning Feeley to be the starter. Unbelievable.

The 2 words that should scare Dolphins fans the most: Scott Mitchell.

QB plays well in very limited action, gets big contract from Dolphins, sucks ass. Mitchell or Freeley - you decide.

That's hilarious! Deal with other teams for what? Maybe a bag of footballs? And I mean maybe. Hmm, come to think of it, he is perfect for Pittsburgh. Or Arizona.

I don't think that A.J. Feeley is that bad of a player. I saw him play during the stretch run a couple of years ago when McNabb was hurt. He wasn't asked to win the game, just manage it and rely on the defense and special teams. I think that he'll be able to do the same thing in Miami and grow into a quarterback like Tom Brady. They were both late round picks. Miami's got a good defense and running game to protect him some. Plus, A.J. was the starter in college in front of Joey Harrington I believe until he was injured, so he has to have some talent.
This is probably a better deal than with Drew Henson. Feeley's been around football everyday. He's probably led the practice team against Philly's defense everyday in practice. I think that this will end up looking like a great deal in the near future.

So I guess you answered your own question then.

I don't think anyone's arguing that he doesn't have potential to be decent (I think Tom Brady relation is a bit of a stretch, though)...the argument is that a second-round pick is way too much to pay for Philadelphia's 3rd string QB.

Its not confirmed yet that there giving up a second rounder for him.

But if that ends up what they give up, whos to say at this point that it was too much? Right now it seems like a lot, but if he performs well as the starter it would seem like a bargain. Everyone seems to think they can predict the future, but I doubt any of you here thought that Tom Brady, Jake Delhome, Jeff Garcia, or Kurt Warner would be effective NFL QBs.
