IWS#60 - Results

Well, the deadline has long passed and the discussion around the NFL offseason seems to drawn the interest away from "off topic" events.
With 27 entries, participation is not on an alltime low, just a little lower then I hoped. Especially after trying to come up with questions not requiring research.
Anyway, the results are in and are following below.

Answers

Question 1: Give the name of the most surprizing Oscar winner last Sunday
10 - Sean Penn
6 - Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
3 - Tim Robbins
2 - Charlize Theron
2 - Renee Zellweger
1 - Sofia Coppola
1 - Annie Lennox
1 - no idea
1 - no surprises

To me, this question was an open question. Sean Penn looks like the sure thing here, but none of the top four mentioned the best male actor. Personally, I would have been staring blank at this question and likely have sent in Charlize Theron.

Question 2: Give or describe your favorite smilie/greamlin/emoticon available at FOFC

10 -
7 - :)
6 -
2 - :D
1 -
1 - :p

This seemed like a funny question to me. Eventually three smilies got a lot of votes. Personally, I had no idea which smilie would win, but I figured it would have been one of the eventual top 3.

Question 3: Give the most important issue in the upcoming presidential elections

12 - economy
6 - gay marriage
4 - Iraq
2 - foreign policy
1 - health care
1 - military
1 - national security

A lot of issues here. Also some weighing of grouping or not grouping answers. Personally, I would have bet on the gay marriages issue, but eventually most people prefer economy. Of the eventual top 7, 6 mentioned economy, making this a clear tiebreaker to finish high or low.

Question 4: Give today's most popular way of communication

16 - phone
11 - email

I immagined more different answers, but in the end only 2 media were mentioned. I like to add one "black" or "white" question and this turned out to be one after all. I decided to group cell phones with (tele)phones and ignored the fact that some of today's cell phones have emial functionality too. This question eventually had little effect on the overall standings, giving the phone people a small advantage.

Question 5: Give the name of a Front Office Football multiplayer league

23 - IHOF
1 - CFL
1 - FOFC
1 - FOFL
1 - WigFL

The single runaway question. The expected hit-or-miss. You mention the International House of Football (IHOF) or you're out. The mixup with FOFL and FOFC had no major impact on the two participants. The four non-IHOF entries all ended up in the bottom 7.

Question 6: Guess how many Dutchmen are playing in the big 4 sports leagues in the USA (MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL)

5 - 10
4 - 0
4 - 1
3 - 5
2 - 25
1 - 2
1 - 3
1 - 4
1 - 6
1 - 19
1 - 24
1 - 85
1 - no idea

A complete crap shoot, or was it? I expected some people to make a real guess and the "smarter" people to come up with weighed guesses like 0, 5 and 10. I also later on realized that some people might see this as an all time question, or a ancestors questions, but the idea was to guess how many are active today. For a correct answer, I have no clue myself, but I know for sure the NFL and NHL are Dutchless, while the NBA has 2 guys playing and 1 on loan to Europe, while several MLB teams have Dutchmen on their farm teams.

So Tucker342 walks away victorious with a score of 60% of the maximum, winning for the first time and beating three-times winner TRO and winless Dutch by far.
Sun Tzu had the honourable last place at the absense of the losingest competitor in IWS history...

SEAN PENN?!?!?!?!

Poli 03-09-2004 11:56 PM

I rule. I answered no idea once or twice. Some questions are covering stuff I don't even bother with. Guess I'm just shallow. :)

MIJB#19 03-10-2004 06:14 AM

Well, I don't care about the Oscars either, but I had to come up with 6 questions I thought would be answerable(?) by any participant.
