And I Thought *I* Was a Nerd

Kid just walked into the office, looking for an internship this summer.

Now, I consider myself to be a rather formidable nerd. This kid (who goes to MIT) beats me by leaps and bounds. Proof?

Listed on his resume as hobbies: Stamp Collecting & Math Tutoring.

Wow.

WSUCougar 03-22-2004 02:57 PM

What, no text sims?

Coffee Warlord 03-22-2004 03:01 PM

Nope. But he has Piano Tutoring experience!

He tutors people in math....as a hobby!?!?

He tudors Hillary Duff, Angie Everhardt and Jessica Simpson...so yeah it's just a hobby...

GoldenEagle 03-22-2004 03:15 PM

I am tutoring this really hot girl in math as a hobby.

sabotai 03-22-2004 03:15 PM

Yeah, but I think you have a different "hobby" you are trying to get her to participate in...so that doesn't count as being a nerd :)

sachmo71 03-22-2004 03:39 PM

You are the biggest nerd I know, Coffee. Linux penguin et all.

MikeVic 03-22-2004 03:40 PM

I consider CoffeeWarlord as a geek. This guy is a nerd. :D

WSUCougar 03-22-2004 03:43 PM

RULING NEEDED!

Does "loser" come into play here at all?

GoldenEagle 03-22-2004 03:45 PM

Enough said....

Buzzbee 03-22-2004 03:45 PM

What about dork? Does that apply?

I think this post speaks most eloquently on the subject.

MikeVic 03-22-2004 03:45 PM

Does it list anything else as hobbies? Or is it safe to assume all he does is collect stamps and tutor people? Maybe he's a swinger as well, but didn't feel the need to put that on his resume. :D And if he tutors Calculus, he could be rich right now.

Coffee Warlord 03-22-2004 03:49 PM

He does tutor Calculus. Multi variable calculus & diff eq.

He's a psycho, I tell you.

Edit: I take pride in my geekdom. But my level of nerd-dom pales in comparison to stamp & math boy.

WSUCougar 03-22-2004 03:50 PM

See now, instead of "stamp collecting" the guy should have put "philatelist" - the meaning of which might be confused with doing multiple chicks at the same time, or something similarly un-dorkish.

He *did* list Ultimate Frisbee as a hobby as well, but since the other two were the aforementioned Stamps & Math, I think it's a bad attempt at a cover story, especially since he filled half a page on his resume with his various piano playing gigs.

WSUCougar 03-22-2004 03:56 PM

Wait a minute now. Ultimate Frisbee is very cool, and counters two of the geek points at least. Motion to reconsider.

NevStar 03-22-2004 03:57 PM

So, did I get the job, or not?

Coffee Warlord 03-22-2004 03:57 PM

Yes, ultimate frisbee rocks.

However, how he can list that in the same line as fucking MATH TUTORING.

Motion fails.

WSUCougar 03-22-2004 03:57 PM

I'm assuming that now would not be a good time to put on my wizard hat and robe?

Radii 03-22-2004 03:59 PM

Who lists hobbies on a resume?

Dude. There's ALWAYS time for wizard hats and robes.

Someone without enough experience to fill a full page, obviously!

Geeks, nerds, and college interns trying to fill space.

In regard to the Ultimate Frisbee, realize that you are two geeks who think it is cool. Therefore the level of coolness has been mitigated. Add one nerd point back.

Motion for summary judgement.

Can't throw a frisbee for shit.

I could peg YOU in the head, if I HAD to.

Bet you think Ultimate Golf and Ultimate Curling are cool too.

WSUCougar 03-22-2004 04:22 PM

"My Dad's got this ultimate set of tools...I can fix it!"

MikeVic 03-22-2004 04:25 PM

:( I put my interests on my resume... I was told to put it at the end. A small two to three sentences about what you do outside of school.. maybe because this was for co-op jobs?

sabotai 03-22-2004 04:52 PM

I about as big of a geek there is, and I played Ultimate Frisbee.

sterlingice 03-22-2004 05:14 PM

I thought ultimate frisbee was the sport of dorks. I know I played it.

Oh, and to contradict the title of this thread. CW, you are a big nerd. Just because you found a bigger one doesn't mean you aren't ;)

SI

This thread takes me back to my college days. Going to school at MIT made me realize that there are many, many levels of geekdom.

Me, I'm with Coffee Warlord. A geek to some people maybe, but on the whole, a fairly typical member of society. I guess I'm a regular guy that likes some geeky things (like sport sims). I would say that most of the people I hung out with fell into this category.

The most bizarre bunch of folks at MIT were the "power-nerds". Every sterotype that you can come up with regarding nerdy behavior could be applied to these guys. They practically lived at the library, rarely showered, drank lots of Jolt and had all of the social graces of a peanut butter sandwich. Scary, scary folk.

No, no. Ultimate frisbee is really the sport of stoners and beach bums. It just got co-opted by us geeks.

Ultimate Frisbee is the sport of athletic geeks.

vex 03-22-2004 10:45 PM

I love ultimate frisbee:cool:

Coffee Warlord 03-22-2004 10:46 PM

I miss it. Played a mean game of ulimate frisbee back in college.

Couldn't run for shit, but I could catch and throw em quite well.

sachmo71 03-23-2004 08:35 AM

Geek.

WSUCougar 03-23-2004 10:32 AM

My greatest Ultimate Frisbee memory comes from senior year in high school, when we had a big track team party after the season ended. We sprinters were challenged by the distance runners to an Ultimate Frisbee game...and we simply lit them up. It was a complete and total ROUT. We stomped 'em. We thrashed them. We...

Oh, sorry.

Sharpieman 03-23-2004 10:46 AM

I listed watching CSPAN2 as a hobby for one of my internships...Does that make me a nerd?
(CSPAN1 is SO overrated)

Desnudo 03-23-2004 10:46 AM

Geek.

Sharpieman 03-23-2004 10:48 AM

Well its all subjective because it was an internship with a State Senator.

rkmsuf 03-23-2004 10:48 AM

brownnoser...

Sharpieman 03-23-2004 10:50 AM

Nah, I love CSPAN2 I'm actually watching it right now...

vex 03-23-2004 10:51 AM

Seriously?

Sharpieman 03-23-2004 10:56 AM

Ah damn, I just realized I am a geek...

vex 03-23-2004 10:59 AM

I used to try to watch C-SPAN, just never caught onto the plot.
