sachmo71 04-13-2004 04:02 PM

Colossal numbers of death row inmates put to death.
Colossal numbers of cows.
Colossal numbers of pickup trucks with ACTUAL dirt on them.
Colossal numbers of soccer moms.
Colossal tornadoes.
Colossal hats.
Colossal amounts of kiddos testing well below the national average.
Colossal military bases. (Fort Hood can kick all of your bases butts!)
Colossal (Big) Tex.
Colossal disappointments in college football.

I could go on, but my boss is watching me. He coming closer...

For Louisiana(and some other states as they spread) there is the colossal swamp rat, otherwise known as a nutria:

Drake 04-13-2004 04:32 PM

That looks like a Colossal Beaver to me.

Not that I've ever seen a Colossal Beaver before.

I've heard that Anna Nicole Smith has one of those...

Bosco 04-13-2004 04:36 PM

We got these in Burlington, VT.

And this too.

Tigercat 04-13-2004 04:41 PM

Well its got a rat tail, so most consider it more of a rat. Although I suppose its closest relative is probably a muscrat. Its from South America originally, brought to Louisiana by the creator of Tabascco sauce in the 1800s. He thought it could be part of a big fur industry. They got loose, supposedly in a hurricane, from their cages. They were not meant for the swamps of Louisiana but have managed to procriate like crazy over the years. The problem is they dig holes in drainage systems that Louisiana towns and cities need to keep water out of streets and backyards. So first some local Sheriff officers started shooting them in the ditches from public streets in their spare time, now the state will hire you out and pay you for their tails if you go out vigilante and kill some. And that is the tail(har har) of the colossal swamp rat. Watch out, because they grow in numbers, and they could be out for your drainage ditches next!

I remember an episode of Insomnia where Dave was driving around with Sheriff Harry Lee shooting Nutria from the back of a pick-up truck.

When I was in HS we had some invade the local backyards, my dad had to gun the mother down(the only time I've even seen my dad hold a gun) because it might have attacked neighborhood children while defending its young. This particular one was the size of very very large cat. We weren't in Harry Lees parish so we didn't have the nutria patrols to help us.

Franklinnoble 04-13-2004 04:52 PM

Well, that's pretty much all I need to know to decide to never visit Louisiana.

Ha, just one minor local annoyance. Kind of like that post we had a while back about black widows infesting Arizona mailboxes.
