WNBA has draft, no one notices
|
I saw some link to a mock WNBA draft on ESPN... But that's it really.
|
wow, I wonder what intern got stuck doing that. "Hey, we got a job for you. Make a draft, put Taurasi first...the rest, eh, do whatever you want. You got fifteen minutes."
|
It was decent news in Minnesota only because they really were hoping Lindsay Whalen would go there. She didn't so now they might as well shut the club down.
|
Hell if MLS can rig their draft, you'd think the WNBA would know how. I mean, don't they understand the whole "hometown allocation" thing? Guess not. Taurasi in Phoenix won't matter, 'cuz no one will care. She needed to be in a major market for TV to notice her, but I guess the idea is to boost up the other markets. Oh well..I'm sure the WNBA makes more money than NFL Europe.
|
dola--
or loses less, I mean. |
I noticed. A Razorback went #5. But I certainly didn't care beyond that.

Don't you mean "Hell, if the NBA can rig a draft and send Patrick Ewing to New York"? SI |

I forgot we even had a team here in Phoenix, but Phoenix is a major market if anyone taps it...no team here is the dominant squad, and i think that some team will eventually take over the fan-base since we are the 6th biggest city and 2nd fastest growing in the nation...I still think a soccer team would be huge here with the vast hispanic population in phoenix and all of AZ...my random thoughts i guess. But the news of her drafting have been non-existent here. |
I took a look at the ESPN stuff, saw they weren't any Lady Vols in this years 1st round crop, relegated it to "I'll probably take a look at the full draft list sometime in the next week" status.
|
Wasn't it up, head-to-head against the NFL Draft last year?
|
Woohooo, we got Alana Beard!
Anyone heard of her? |
I think she's pretty good. She went to Duke.
Ah, nevermind. hehehe |
Someone want to explain this one to me? Houston takes someone with the last pick of the 2nd round and then turns around and trades her for the player taken 1st in the 3rd round. Near as I can tell, they got nothing in return for this move down. Anyone know the story here or is this just plain unprofessional. Like when you have a couple of guys in your draft queue in fantasy baseball and you accidentally pick the wrong one and then try to trade for the one you meant to take. Could you just see Tagliabue up at the podium saying "And with the first pick in the first round, the Chargers take Eli Manning" and all of a sudden you hear Schottenheimer yell "Oh $@#$ I meant to take Roethlisberger. Hey! Al Davis, take him next and I'll trade you something good for him"

Don't know this for a fact but my guess would be that by taking the player who got picked first in the third round they saved money. I don't know for a fact but if it's like the NBA where salaries are based on draft position then this is most likely the case. |
Wow, look at the WNBA talk going on here.
And i came in here to make a smart-ass comment about the NBA has played 5 seasons and nobody noticed. (backs out the door) |

The only issue with that is that MLS is a Spring-Summer league. The only way a team can play in PHX is to do night games only and even then it'll still be in the 90s for most games. I doubt the players would be thrilled by the prospect of playing when it's 115 (which means it'd be around 130 on the field) during the day. |

but it's a dry heat. :p |

In 2006, there will be a new retractable-roof stadium in Glendale for them to play in. |
To continue the thread-jack (not that anyone seems to mind, it seems):
True, but I think MLS is looking for intimate stadiums for their teams to play in since they won't draw 60,000 to a game. See the new stadium LA plays in. I think Dallas is looking for smaller digs as well. It's never looked good to have New York, DC, and New England playing in football stadiums because the empty seats are everywhere. |
I checked ESPN.com and saw that the WORLD CHAMPION DETROIT SHOCK received an "A" for their draft. Way to go Bill Lambier! Bring home another championship!
|
From that ESPN.com link:
Rebecca Lobo's Mock Draft Prior to the Draft, retired WNBA legend and NBA TV analyst Rebecca Lobo predicted where the top prospects would go. Hmmm..."WNBA legend"? Didn't Lobo average like five points per game for her pro career? I could see her being called a college ball legend, but a WNBA legend? Not that anyone else will care... |

"WNBA lagend." That phrase just cracks me up. :D |
I noticed that too Jeeber. Did not make sense.
D'OH! I just admitted that I actually viewed WNBA draft preview coverage. And I came here to comment that this was probably the most useless real world sports thread ever - WNBA threadjacked to MLS. |
