FOFC All-Time NHL Team Challenge (Nomination Thread)

I’ve been wanting to do this ever since WSUCougar’s NFL Team Challenge.

1. The group nominates 8 people (more if there’s a lot of interest) who obviously have a passion and knowledge of hockey. They have to be seconded by another member.
2. 1000 points are allocated to each individual to select an All-Time NHL team.

3. Each person bids on 12 forwards, 6 defencemen, 2 goalies and one coach.

4. Bids are to be submitted to me by PM. 24 hours is probably a good guideline per round. I’ll compile the rosters and post the results of Round 1. We’ll repeat until all teams are filled after which each person can set their lines.

5. The “owner” of each team will be kept secret because eventually we’ll post matchups for the FOFC membership to vote on who has the best team.

Selection Guidelines:

Players’ careers are the focus, not individual seasons. Also, you’re trying to compile a team that can grind through four rounds of the playoffs, ultimately winning the Stanley Cup – not a single game or Olympic style tournament. As such, 6 offensive defencemen isn’t exactly what you want nor is a checking line of Lady Byng midgets. Also keep forward positions in mind. Gretsky could switch to left wing, not right wing, and Kurri wouldn’t be playing left wing or center. Essentially, you do need wingers, not just 8 centers.

Let the nominations begin…

Suckass

Chief Rum 04-29-2004 11:10 PM

I appreciate the noms and second, but I'm afraid I will have to decline.

In all honesty, I really think this contest is best served by having people who literally grew up in hockey areas.

As I once suggested about foreigners with baseball, I don't feel I have a proper grasp of the olden days to appreciate who was truly great back then, and I wouldn't want to sully a historical contest by putting up a team from 1985-1990 and onward. :)

I would second sachmo, bbor, Maple Leafs and primelord if they have been nominated, and would nominate Cards4Ever if he happens to see this thread in one of his rare visits here.

Actually, you bring up a good point, it should be from 1985 or so on, otherwise, Montreal will without a doubt have the best team.

sachmo71 04-30-2004 12:57 AM

I second Cards4Ever, especially if it will mean he shows up more often. :)

Also, I appreciate the nominations but I will probably give my slot to someone more knowledgable about "old time hockey"!

Just to clarify, your team will be a mixture of players from NHL history, regardless of the teams they played for. Everyone bids on the players they want on your team with the 1000 points available.

The strategy (and fun part IMO) is deciding how much to spend on a guy like Gretsky. IIRC, Joe Montana was the highest priced player in the NFL Challenge but that hampered the person's ability to field the remaining squad.

I hope that makes sense.

Here's a link to the original NFL Challenge held last year:

I second klayman and Johnny93g, and nominate sterlingice.

Thanks for the nomination bbor but since I'll see everyone's bidding, I don't think it will be fair for me to participate.

Simms 04-30-2004 02:10 PM

I'm in, btw.

Blade 04-30-2004 04:33 PM

Just so long as someone takes the 80's Oilers into account!!!

:D

Karim 04-30-2004 09:00 PM

bump

primelord 04-30-2004 11:31 PM

I appreciate the nomination, but if someone were to second me I would have to decline. I could come up with a hell of an all time Blues team, but would struggle with the great players prior to the late 80's.

If he hasn't already been seconded I second Honolulu_Blue. (Note: The HB with the _ is the hockey one :))

I also nominate DoubleA even though hasn't been here in months. :)

And I nominate MizzouRah

Karim 05-01-2004 12:13 PM

Where oh where are DD, HB and klayman?

Johnny93g 05-01-2004 01:22 PM

this is gonna be fun...ive got a few names ready who i must have..... ;)

Sorry, some how I missed this thread...

I'm in!!!

Karim 05-01-2004 08:39 PM

Good. We got at least five. I'll PM the remainder and we probably can proceed in a couple days.

klayman 05-01-2004 10:22 PM

Sure, I'm in.

MizzouRah 05-01-2004 11:04 PM

Thanks Primelord, but I'm like you... I know Blues players galore, but league wise, hockey is my weakest subject. :)

Todd

Karim 05-02-2004 11:55 AM

We've got 7. Cards4ever isn't here that much...

Does anyone object to me being team number 8 so we can have 3 rounds of playoffs?

Karim 05-02-2004 01:37 PM

Addendum:

Just playing around with some rosters, it's quite possible with only 21 positions and 8 teams, a majority of people would get their first choice of players if they had 1000 points to work with. (1000 points worked well for a 53-man NFL roster). So I'll suggest we reduce it to 500.

Also, to add a twist for subsequent rounds of bidding, there will undoubtedly be a lot of good players available that you hadn't thought of originally or people chose to pass on thinking "everyone else" would bid on them.

So let's say you already have 2 goalies after the initial round of bidding but you see that Grant Fuhr is still available. You can still bid on him in the 2nd round but you lose the points you've already bid on you're goalies.

It should only take maybe 2 or 3 rounds to fill the roster with warm bodies so we should probably limit roster changes for those with points left over to about 5 rounds.

This adds strategy in that maybe you think it would be better to not fill out the entire roster for Round 1 and save points for players people forgot about? Or maybe you'll just go for the big names in Round 1?

Makes sense? Comments (relevant to the thread)?

SFL Cat 05-02-2004 02:20 PM

Hockey...hockey...you play that on ice, right?

Karim 05-03-2004 11:02 AM

Ok. Silence is presumed to be consent. ;)

I'll start another thread with Round 1 particulars.
