Major Sports Mileage Contest

The object is to accumulate either the fewest or the most miles (as the crow flies) by using one current franchise location from each of the four major sports (NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA). Post the four franchises in order of travel.

Okay, here's the rules:

a. IMPORTANT: Each leg of your trip must be longer than the previous one, OR each leg of your trip must be shorter than the previous one. One or the other must apply to the whole trip - you obviously cannot mix the two.

b. For state/regional teams such as the New England Patriots, the home city is the location of the stadium.

c. You cannot use the same city or team location more than once in your entry, even if rule (b) seems to suggest that you can. In other words, you cannot use both the New York Giants (Meadowlands, NJ) and New York Yankees (the Bronx), because they both use New York.

d. You cannot edit your post for any reason. If you want or need to change anything, delete it and re-post. This is important because, in case of duplicate answers, the first person to post an answer determines who gets it.

e. On;y one entry per player.

Contest ends 24 hours from this post.

San Francisco Giants (MLB) to Oakland Raiders (NFL) to San Jose Sharks (NHL) to Sacramento Kings (NBA)

Am I following the rules here right?

Yup! As long as Oakland to San Jose is longer than SF to Oakland, which I assume it is.

TurnerONU22 05-26-2004 03:22 PM

Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA) to Columbus Blue Jackets (NHL) to Cincinnati Reds (MLB) to Indianapolis Colts (NFL)

henry296 05-26-2004 03:28 PM

I'll try for the longest trip:

Boston (MLB) to Dallas (NHL) to (Seattle (NBA) to Miami (NFL)

Karim 05-26-2004 03:36 PM

Longest Trip:

Vancouver Canuck (NHL) to Toronto Blue Jays (MLB) - 2080 miles
Toronto Blue Jays (MLB) to Los Angeles Lakers (NBA) - 2170 miles
Los Angeles Laker (NBA) to New York Giants (NFL) - 2470 miles

RendeR 05-26-2004 03:45 PM

Miami (NFL) to Vancouver (NHL) to Boston (NBA) to San Diego (MLB)

3499 + 3048 + 3046=

9603 total miles

You almost had it. You'd be better off with:

Oakland Raiders to Golden State Warriors to San Francisco Giants to San Jose Sharks.

golden state plays in the city of Oakland, so this won't work.

Golden State plays in Oakland.

Wolfpack 05-26-2004 03:50 PM

Taz, that can't work because the leg from NY to DC is longer than the leg from DC to Philly (presumably you are trying to increase distance with each leg). Reverse the last two and you'll be okay (78 and 100-something miles).

Wolfpack 05-26-2004 03:51 PM

Dola...
Actually Render, your numbers are higher than mine. My distances are in the 2700-2900 range. All yours are over 3000.

Okay, wasn't sure about the distances.

New Jersey Devils to New York Yankees to Philadelphia Eagles to Washington Wizards.

RendeR 05-26-2004 03:52 PM

Oh, actually, I'm using mapquest numbers so thats not "as the crow flies" you may still have me beat.

Just saw Render's remark above which explains it...never mind.

228.

this won't work, remember he said the city where the stadium/arena is

the nets play in east rutherford just as the giants do.

:p

the rules aren't spelled out very well... as the NY teams would've been highly obvious.
.

anyway, how about GBnfl-milwaukeemlb(sorta)-chicagonhl-indy?

Raven Hawk 05-26-2004 04:03 PM

Orlando Magic (NBA) to Seattle Mariners (MLB) to Miami Dolphins (NFL) to Vancouver Canucks (NHL)

As the crowflies:

Orlando-Seattle: 2553 mi
Seattle-Miami: 2734 mi
Miami-Vancouver: 2802 mi

TOTAL: 8089 mi

edit to include mileage

I agree they aren't spelled out well if you don't read them. :p

Good point. My mileage numbers are also based on mapquest so they are a bit suspect. If that is how Coug is figuring this out, I believe I am behind Wolfpack by about 100 miles or so.

Took mine before I could post it.

WSUCougar 05-26-2004 04:13 PM

That's going to be tough to beat.

Wolfpack 05-26-2004 04:19 PM

#$*&(%* I just deleted my old one and then realized I had an NHL conflict. My old one was bested by Raven by a few miles anyway....

SplitPersonality1 05-26-2004 04:19 PM

Tampa Bay (NFL) to Seattle Mariners (MLB) to Miami Dolphins (NBA) to Vancouver Canucks (NHL)
\Maybe a tad further I think.

SplitPersonality1 05-26-2004 04:20 PM

great game as always Coug. Gotta go. Can't wait to see how this turns out.

Wolfpack 05-26-2004 04:20 PM

As the crow flies, Orlando to Seattle is just a bit longer than Tampa to Seattle (like 20-something miles). All other legs are common and cancel each other so Raven has the lead at the moment.

Desnudo 05-26-2004 04:21 PM

New York (MLB) to New Jersey (NBA) to Philadelphia (NHL) to Baltimore (NFL)

I assume this is within the rules since the CA Arena is in New Jersey, it's a New Jersey team, and the Yankees or Mets play in New York City?

WSUCougar 05-26-2004 04:28 PM

No, you're within the rules. But remember, no edits, Wolfpack.

Wolfpack 05-26-2004 04:30 PM

I edited to add the comment at the bottom, list didn't change.

Wolfpack 05-26-2004 04:30 PM

Sunrise, FL (NHL Panthers) to Portland, OR (NBA) to Miami (NFL) to Seattle (MLB)

(to satisfy the rule about no editing)

Don't you think adding the New Jersey NBA/NHL franchise in here would've been easy, WSUCougar?

Also, would using pats and Celts violate the rule?
New England vs Boston and Foxoboro v. Boston?

1-800-abc..Damn!

WSUCougar 05-27-2004 07:27 AM

I may lose net access this afternoon, so here are the preliminary results:

Sovereignstar has the fewest miles (146) and Wolfpack the most (8125).

Wolfpack, why don't you be the judge if we get any more entries and I'm not around.
=====

Sovereignstar:
San Francisco Giants (MLB) to Oakland Raiders (NFL) to San Jose Sharks (NHL) to Sacramento Kings (NBA)

18 + 38 + 90 = 146 miles

TurnerONU22:
Cleveland Cavaliers (NBA) to Columbus Blue Jackets (NHL) to Cincinnati Reds (MLB) to Indianapolis Colts (NFL)

124 + 100 + 98 = 222 miles

henry296:

Boston (MLB) to Dallas (NHL) to (Seattle (NBA) to Miami (NFL)

1551 + 1683 + 2734 = 5968 miles

Karim:
Vancouver Canuck (NHL) to Toronto Blue Jays (MLB) - 2091 miles
Toronto Blue Jays (MLB) to Los Angeles Lakers (NBA) - 2183 miles
Los Angeles Laker (NBA) to New York Giants (NFL) - 2453 miles
= 6727 miles

RendeR:
Miami (NFL) to Vancouver (NHL) to Boston (NBA) to San Diego (MLB)

2802 + 2509 + 2582 = BUZZER

TazFTW
New Jersey Devils to New York Yankees to Philadelphia Eagles to Washington Wizards

12 + 89 + 126 = 227 miles

Finkenst:
GBnfl-milwaukeemlb(sorta)-chicagonhl-indy?

101 + 86 + 163 = BUZZER

Raven Hawk:
Orlando Magic (NBA) to Seattle Mariners (MLB) to Miami Dolphins (NFL) to Vancouver Canucks (NHL)

2553 + 2734 + 2802 = 8089 miles
SplitP:
Tampa Bay (NFL) to Seattle Mariners (MLB) to Miami Dolphins (NBA) to Vancouver Canucks (NHL)

2529 + 2734 + 2802 = 8065

Desnudo:
New York (MLB) to New Jersey (NBA) to Philadelphia (NHL) to Baltimore (NFL)

12 + 79 + 93 = 184 miles

Wolfpack:
Sunrise, FL (NHL Panthers) to Portland, OR (NBA) to Miami (NFL) to Seattle (MLB)

2685 + 2706 + 2734 = 8125 miles

Wolfpack 05-27-2004 03:00 PM

As WSUCoug has handed me the keys, I guess it's now my place to say this contest is over and that Sovereignstar wins the shortest route contest while my entry won the longest route contest.

Wonder what Coug will have us do next? I think its time for another Geography Challenge, personally, but that's me... ;)

SplitPersonality1 05-27-2004 03:07 PM

Congrats Wolfpack & Sovstar.

Great puzzle/game as always Coug.

Huckleberry 05-27-2004 03:26 PM

I know I'm late.

Texas Rangers (MLB) to Dallas Cowboys (NFL) to Dallas Stars (NHL) is only 28 miles. I don't like the NBA. I win. Even though I broke two rules.

And if you want to go to the nearest NBA team it goes all the way to 252 miles.

TazFTW 05-27-2004 03:29 PM

Since the contest is over, I'm just wondering if it would have been okay to use San Juan, Puerto Rico for the Montreal Expos?

Wolfpack 05-27-2004 04:04 PM

If I had to guess, I'd say "no" simply because it's not their official home. Would you consider Milwaukee home for the Green Bay Packers for all those years when they played some of their games at County Stadium? (Does anyone know why, other than perhaps money, they chose to do that?)
