OT - What do you guys eat instead of chips?

Whenever I'm feeling hungry, I'd always grab some potato chips. But now I want to eat healthier, and want to avoid chips and other junk food.

Is there anything out there that'll make me full, but isn't filled with fat or calories or anything? I'm currently trying to substitute in popcorn, cheese & crackers, soup, fruit Jello cups, and Cheese strings (cheese sticks).

Anyone else have ideas?

Fruit of some kind?

the cheese stuff isnt really any healthier. trail mix is a good substitute, something with raisins and nuts and various other dried fruit, pretzels are also good though not really healthy theyre better than chips. Wheat thins with a little bit of peanut butter are pretty good as well.

Ksyrup 06-04-2004 12:06 PM

It's funny, one thing I hardly ever ate, even before I went "low-carb," was chips. We have pretzels at the house, but that's about it.

In general, when snacking between meals, I usually eat popcorn, strawberries, watermelon, sugar-free jello, yogurt, cheese, or dry cereal (low-carb Special K rocks).

Cuckoo 06-04-2004 12:08 PM

They're high in fat, but the good kind, if that's possible - not saturated (I think) in other words. If you're doing low carb, they're a necessity.

Pick you up some cashews.

Ksyrup 06-04-2004 12:22 PM

Yeah, I burnt myself out on nuts, but I agree, that's a good snack item, too. Actually, I enjoy Pumpkorn (spiced pumpkin seeds) as well.

korme 06-04-2004 12:28 PM

nuts are very undelicious

I don't believe any of my chip substitutes are really any better/healthier than the chips, but ... PB-and-crackers (the pre-packaged stuff from Lance, etc), dry-roasted peanuts, basically other stuff loaded with salt, preservatives, etc.

One option that you didn't mention though (it ain't my thing but I know adults who enjoy 'em) are those little fruit snack creations, the ones that seem a lot like Gummy Bears to me.

JeeberD 06-04-2004 12:49 PM

Peanut butter. Spoonful after spoonful of delicious creamy peanut butter...

Baby carrots
Yogurt
Fresh tomatoes
Nuts in moderation

But nothing beats good old greasy potato chips, sigh........

Danny 06-04-2004 01:22 PM

I started the south beach diet three weeks ago and I generally snack on nuts, reduced fat cheese, cottage cheese, meat and cheese wrap, vegatables (except corn and potatoes) or the fruits that are on the plan.

Oh, and I've lost 12 pounds (half water weight) in those three weeks and have had very few cravings since the 1st week as opposed to multiple ones a day like I had before starting the plan... so far so good

korme 06-04-2004 01:23 PM

how about cheese and crackers

are pringles healthier than say, ruffles or lays or mike sells?

ISiddiqui 06-04-2004 01:25 PM

instead of chips?!!

Shorty, you are doing that wrong. You get the oral part out of the way BEFORE the intercourse.

Damn kids.

FrogMan 06-04-2004 02:02 PM

Baked Lays do me good. They even have a "Cool Ranch" Doritos version of 'em out now.

Desnudo 06-04-2004 02:12 PM

If you really want to eat healthy, eat a Balance bar or something like it inbetween meals. They fill you up and you control your calories.

Peanut butter, nuts, cheese. What are three things I really like and shudder when I look at their nutritional facts, Alex? You might as well be eating potato chips. Every time I get a bag of peanuts at the ballpark, I look at the back to remind myself that each bag has 60 grams of fat (~150% using the back of the bag) so I only end up eating a third of half of it. I'll go with yogurt, fruit, pretzels, or crackers (except some of the really bad ones like Ritz).

It depends on your nutritional philosophy. Nuts have the good kind of fat and cheese is ok if you eat the reduced fat kind. All my life I've been overweight. Yet, I've always watched my fat as I used to ascribe to the theory that fat makes you fat and I would take in more carbs in order to eat enough food. As it turns out that may have been what kept me overweight. Recent studies suggest that fat does not make you fat, but in fact can even lower your cholesterol (the good kind). Now of course, too much of anything is bad for you, so dont eat the whole bag.

Potato chips are pretty much the devil when it comes to the Atkinson's, South beath or any other lower carb diet.

Glengoyne 06-04-2004 04:03 PM

Pecans, toasted Almonds, grapes when they are in season, and my current chip replacement....Twisted Braid pretzels, The thicker the better.

Franklinnoble 06-04-2004 04:37 PM

Uhh... over here, we call them "french fries," not "chips."

I know a lot of natural food/vegetarian type people and through them have been introduced to those fruit/vegetable chip things. Basically they consist of a mix of various fruits and veggies dried and "chipped" and they're not bad actually - they lack the grease and heavy salt content of normal potato chips so right there they're better for you.

Mac Howard 06-04-2004 07:25 PM

Try celery! Apparently you expend more calories in chewing it than you take in by consuming it.

On the other hand I prefer salted peanuts
