For the guys that live in or near some big cities, Pioneer's giving away free tickets to a Chronicles of Riddick screening.

It would be a cool movie...without Riddick. Some neat special effects.

In other news: Vin Diesel has officially taken the word "duh" out of his vocabulary.

Unless a crisp $20 bill comes with the free ticket I aint watchin...man does that movie look horrible.

I can't speak to "The Chronicles of Riddick", but I can say that it's predecessor, 2000's "Pitch Black" (also directed by Twohy) was a lot better than it had any right to be. The opening sequence is truly amazing, and the use of lighting/light filtering to reflect the different sunshines (they're in a trinary star system) was well done. Twohy did a very good job with the original, especially considering that it was a small budget flick. Vin Diesel was also quite good (and I'm no fan of his). Definitely worth a rental.

I absolutely loved Pitch Black. I don't suspect that Chronicles will be anywhere near that good, but I'll probably give it a watch when it's on video. If I was near any of those cities, I'd watch it for free. Since I'm not, I figured some of you might be interested.

The free tickets are sold out for Los Angeles. I also really liked Pitch Black and while this will likely not be as good, I'll be seeing it in the theatres most likely.

I would go but I still haven't seen Pitch Black yet. Guess I need to go to Blockbuster and check it out...

Oddly enough, I saw the movie without having the foggiest idea who Vin Diesel was until the credits rolled. I can't remember what movie he sort of broke into the mainstream with, but he was just a name to me at that point.

To be honest, I think I probably liked the movie better because I wasn't watching it trying to judge him, I was just watching a movie ... one that you aptly describe IMO as better than it had any right to be.

I think his first "hit" movie was The Fast and the Furious, FWIW...

I think the first mainstream move Vin Diesel was when he played Caparzo in Saving Private Ryan. I remember seeing that movie and having no clue who he was.
