Do you think we will ever see a woman president?

Peeling potatoes for dinner got me thinking about a woman president. Do you think that we might see one in the not so distant future? Do you think more women might vote for a female president just because she is a woman? Do you think we might see a record turnout if a woman ran?

timmynausea 06-21-2004 07:10 PM

I could imagine an election with a female candidate being a record turnout for sure. It might be a while, but if Kerry loses and Hillary runs, she'd have to be considered the Democratic frontrunner for 2008. I mean, a lot of things could happen between now and then, of course, but who else have the Dems got with real name recognition? Howard Dean can raise money, but people think of him as a loser. Edwards is still relatively young, but he'll still have very little political experience in 2008 (esp. considering he is not running for re-election in the senate.) Who else is there?

Not hard to envision Condi or Hillary winning, and therefore not hard to envision it being done eventually.

In the not so distand future? Next sunday, A.D?

Actually, I'd say it's a given that there will eventually be one but I'm not so sure it'll be real soon. I don't see any viable candidates yet anyway. By this, I don't mean qualified but connected enough and acceptable enough to the powers that be in their party to get nominated in the first place.

I don't know if more women who already vote would vote for someone just because they are a woman but it's very possible that women who don't vote
might register just to vote for her.

I think the chances have to be good that sometime down the road a woman will be president.

Hillary is the first name that popped into my head. It got me thinking, if she might have a harder time being elected because of Bill. Then again, some people do believe that Bill was the first lady, not the other way around. :D Also, it got me thinking about a wierd scenario, a very popular president gets his wife to run after him, allowing him 4 more years in office. It's probably an extreme longshot, but you never know.

Neuqua 06-21-2004 07:54 PM

Did anyone else see the skit where Ali G asked Newt Gingrich this question?

Sun Tzu 06-21-2004 08:10 PM

Yes in the distant future. No in the not too distant future. Maybe in the 2020's.

It will happen after Bush wins re-election. Hillary will get two terms, and then brother Jeb will will two terms. If that happens (counting the two years Bush Sr. was in office as VP), then there will be a Bush or Clinton in office for 11 terms (44 years).

...in this scenario, by the time Jeb comes out of office, Chelsea will be definitely old enough to be President.

Well, if we're going to ask about women being president, how about taking it one step further and asking the question "how long until a minority is elected president?" That's what I'm really waiting to see, a white woman winning the election would be a shock, but a minority would be even more shocking if you ask me.

SFL Cat 06-21-2004 08:50 PM

I can see a woman in the White House (as President), but it won't be Hillary.

jeff061 06-21-2004 08:52 PM

With all the loser guy candidates lately, its only a matter of time.

I know i personally don't differentiate between a male in a female as far as their ability to run the country.

I wouldn't be half surprised if we see Hillary Clinton vs. Condaleeza Rice in the 2008 Election...

It could happen.

Jon 06-21-2004 10:13 PM

I don't see Condaleeza Rice running for President, and certainly not getting the nomination for the Republican Party.

Dutch 06-21-2004 10:40 PM

I do.

Is Rice American born? Someone mention Edwards, but he could be Kerry's running mate.

I planned on gorging my eyes out before one gets sworn in, so I can say "Nope" with a clear conscience.

Yea I saw that, I forgot the exact wording of his question. But hilarious stuff, I'm sad that Ali G isn't on HBO anymore.

in all actuality... I would love to see a woman in office....

Aylmar 06-22-2004 07:49 AM

I tacked "in your lifetime" onto the end of the question and voted no.

Honolulu Blue 06-22-2004 10:09 AM

Woman president? Sure, yeah, why not? If Hillary or Condi don't make it, someone will eventually break through.

The more intriguing question is...

IMO, Colin Powell would have had a fair shot at it in '92, '96, or 2000 had he really wanted to run. I think his window of opportunity is just about shut.

My best guess to a minority president is not in the next decade or so, but anytime after 2020 it's possible. And I'm think more likely Latino or Asian than black.

Desnudo 06-22-2004 11:32 AM

Since Margaret Thatcher did it, and that lady in Pakistan did it, I'm sure that we'll have one sooner or later. Just keep the nuclear football away from her during "that time of the month." *rimshot*

So would Colonel Nathan Jessup. He's sick of taking cold showers, so I've heard.
