Any interest in a historical league?

I would love to be involved in an FOFC historical league using the historical files located at Senator's FOF Historical Project site. We could start with the 1970 roster file and work our way forward from there. Are there any other people out there that think this sort of league would be extremely cool?

j25352857 06-30-2004 11:00 PM

this was brought up in my league during the past week, and there was some interest for a league like this

sachmo71 07-01-2004 09:03 AM

i would be interested.

fantastic flying froggies 07-01-2004 09:09 AM

I might be, depending on time availability.

3ric 07-01-2004 12:46 PM

I'm VERY tempted, Senator and I actually mentioned the possibility back when FOF2k4 was released...

Senator 07-01-2004 01:16 PM

:)

JeeberD 07-01-2004 03:20 PM

Excellent, I'm glad to hear that there are others out there who would like to do this. So what would be the next step into making this a reality?

sachmo71 07-01-2004 10:19 PM

A commish?

JeeberD 07-02-2004 12:19 AM

Yup, that would probably help. You volunteering for the job, Sach? :D

Well Jeeb, you did start this thread, didn't you ? I think that instantly qualifies you as a volunteer... :D

sachmo71 07-02-2004 01:27 PM

I can't and won't run this league. It would be a guaranteed failure. I don't have the time. Sorry.

Vince 07-02-2004 02:09 PM

I'd be interested, like triple F said, based upon time constraints. In four weeks, I'm done with school forever, so I should have LOTS of time :)

And no, I don't get a real-life job until next year, so yes, I will indeed have LOTS of free time :)

JeeberD 07-02-2004 03:14 PM

The problem I have with running the league is that I have very little technical knowledge when it comes to computers and programs, and I haven't the foggiest idea how to set up a website and message board. Maybe I should post something about this on the main board for those who may not come look here?

sachmo71 07-02-2004 03:19 PM

The commish doesn't necessarily have to run the website. Maybe someone in the league would be interested in doing the web design.

I think a quick message in general discussion would be a nice idea, since this league would be so unique.

Passacaglia 07-02-2004 03:35 PM

I'd be interested.

Passacaglia 07-02-2004 03:43 PM

Actually, I have a friend interested as well.

Thul 07-02-2004 03:47 PM

I would be that friend... :)

Sounds like great fun! I'd like to lay claim to the Jets!

Also...I'm a web developer on the side, so I could maintain a basic informational site for the league. I'd have to look into setting up a message board/chat before I make promises on that end.

LET IT BE KNOWN...

I WANT TO BE THE GOSH DARN COWBOYS!!!

Passacaglia 07-02-2004 04:34 PM

All right, I'm heading out for the weekend. I'm definitely interested, though -- any team is fine. I'll be back Tuesday.

Vince 07-02-2004 05:09 PM

As long as we're laying claim...

...the 49ers are mine :)

I wouldn't mind being the commish if I have time...but I won't be able to answer the question of 'will I have enough time' until August at the earliest, and I'd think we want to start before then.

duckman 07-02-2004 06:11 PM

I like to be the Saints!

Jesse_Ewiak 07-02-2004 07:35 PM

Here's an sort of out there idea...

...actually having the "right" to 1 or 2 Franchise Player's per Decade. What does that mean? Basically, for each decade each team gets to pick one player thats associated with that team. (Example: 1980's 49ers: Jerry Rice).

But, in order to draft them, you have to either have a high enough pick to grab them yourself _or_ trade for the pick. Which means it will cost you. Also, you'd be taking the risk because maybe Joe Montana in "our" world is a flop. Just a idea, because thr NFL of 1970 is not that different from 2004 aside from eight new teams and a bit of divisional reorganziing.

Volunteer-ism

I would be willing to be an assistant-commish in charge of the website. I've in a number of leagues already and have suggested using the historical files in one of those leagues. some examples of my work are below:

http://mlf.majecc.net
http://mlf.majecc.net/sfl
http://bengals.majecc.net
http://maniax.majecc.net
http://renegades.majecc.net
http://diesel.majecc.net

whats one more league among addicts? =)

Thul 07-02-2004 10:05 PM

Re: Finding a "commish", etc...
It sounds like there are at least two people willing to pitch in on a league website (forums aside). We could run the league under a multi-team committee who would be in charge of setting rules, helping run the drafts, handle disputes, etc.

Perhaps that would take some pressure off whomever is the commish. That person would just have to set the schedules and run the stages.

If people don't mind a 1st-time commish, I'd be willing to volunteer.

Ahem. As the mofo whose idea it was to start this league I think I should have right of first refusal on the glorious Dallas Cowboys franchise... ;)

Of course, if it's a huge deal I suppose that I could take the stinkin' Broncos instead.

That sounds like a good idea to me. I'll volunteer my services so that we can get this sucker off the ground. So does a committee of Thul, Vince, Render, and myself sound OK? Is there anyone else who would like to help out?

JeeberD 07-02-2004 10:58 PM

Dola-

The interested parties so far are:

JeeberD
j25352857
Sachmo
fff
3ric
Senator
Vince
Passacaglia
Thul
duckman
Jesse_Ewiak
RendeR

12 folks ain't a bad start. Hopefully we'll get some more folks in here after the holiday weekend...

Thul 07-02-2004 11:03 PM

We'd probably need at least one more person on a "commish" committee to break ties when voting on rules, or if there are any league disputes. Five or Seven teams should do it.

I've downloaded McKerney's Throwback Logos and all the draft files, and as a late comer to the FOF Historical Project site, I must say impressive work !

Also, we still need to resolve forum hosting...unless people want to just start in the FOF Dynasty forum here and move later when/if we find a perm home.?

JeeberD 07-02-2004 11:16 PM

If we need one more "co-commish" I would hope that 3ric or Senator might be willing to be that person. They both know the historical files inside-out and also have plenty of multiplayer league experience...

The_herd 07-02-2004 11:28 PM

You can put me down as interested.

3ric 07-03-2004 01:00 AM

I'm heading out on vacation for a week, otherwise I'd be happy to help with anything. You might want to ping Nilodor about this league, he did more than half of the draftfiles. Anyone who's posted on Senator's site could be a potential owner, I guess.

GoT 07-03-2004 02:14 AM

Buccaneers

I would claim the Buccaneers, do I HAVE to take the best player of the decade??????

:p

fantastic flying froggies 07-03-2004 07:41 AM

If we're at the 'laying claims' stage, I'd like the Giants. I would just love to draft LT and build my big D around him again...

Thul 07-03-2004 09:38 AM

Re: Player of the Decade idea

It's an interesting idea, but how would it be implemented fairly? We could say that when LT, Rice, etc. comes into the league, the Giants, 49'ers, etc. would need to sacrifice a 1st round pick that year to "claim" them, but is that enough and is that fair for a team who really needs that player to be competitive?

I mean the Giants pick that year could be extremely low. It also puts historically bad franchises (TB) in a real bind if they can never qualify for some of the greatest players of all time.

I'm personally looking forward to just playing with the array of great historical players and seeing them all in action against each other. Let the chips fall where they may once the league rocks into motion. If TB lucks out and gets Barry Sanders, that's not the end of the world to me. They earned him.

I just want to see Barry Sanders in action :)

It's per decade, so it would be a chance that doesn't come about very often. Also, almost every team had at least one player good enough to warrant sacrificing their first round pick...at least I think so? :)

I like this rule, but it's a bit more of a headache for the commish.

Jeebs...about the cowboys, i would feel like a pretty big shit heel if I took them from you. It was your idea, after all. However, my alternate choice would be the Saints, and it appears that they have been claimed.

Now I don't know what to do. :(

I like the rule, too. I'm just not sure how to implement it fairly. I mean (and I'm just using him as an example) when LT comes up, he'll likely be a top 5 pick normally. What if the Giants don't pick until 25 that year? Is giving up the 25th pick to automatically get the 5th best player that year good enough? I know it doens't happen that often, but if the Lions pick 3rd that year and they really need an OLB, ouch.

I guess we could always say if your 1st round pick isn't high enough, you have to give up more (maybe 2 first rounders total) to claim them. This would be a good topic for a "commish" council to vote on each year...what each player is worth in draft picks.

We need Jimmy Johnson to provide us with his draft chart :)

Jeebs- next time you're on AIM, send a message to the name " merlinxx13".. he is the guy who brought it up in my league and could help out the commish council with ideas or whatever.

Btw- here is the discussion thread about this from my league, http://www.mindwipesports.net/forums...16&t=2248&st=0

I'll post a message telling those interested to come over here, or I can get their contact info for you, whatever.

Buccaneer 07-03-2004 10:50 AM

Do I assume you will be using real players and using the historical draft files?

Thul 07-03-2004 10:56 AM

That was my impression, based on JeeberD's first post.

THe draft chart is already available at my website:

http://mlf.majecc.net

click the link in the top middle of the page.

As for what team I want...I can't really decide. I have the bengals in another league and currently my Football conglamorate has 4 teams east (or damn close) of the mississippi, I'm thinking I need a west coast club......

I'll take Seattle, If anyone can turn the seachickens around, its me =)

Thul 07-03-2004 11:00 AM

Nice. I figured someone out there had it!

Historic League Football
NFL History
Has-Been Football League
Re-Write History League
National Historic League Football

someone pic something =) and I can get forums and a web page started.

Thul 07-03-2004 11:07 AM

How about HFL (Historic Football League)? Short and sweet.

NFL Legends Football League, Historic NFL, Historic Football League is good, too!

RendeR 07-03-2004 11:23 AM

Ok, the the HFL it is then. I'll get to work this weekend on a site, the message board will be:

http://www.majecc.net/hflboard

EDIT: ok, the board is up, I need the Commish group to register so I can give them permissions and wot-not, also I'd like at least one other person familiar with phpBB to help administrate the board itself. ANy takers?

RendeR 07-03-2004 11:43 AM

DOLA: ANyone who is good with designing phpBB board styles would be an EXCELLENT choice, as I haven't a clue beyond downloading someone elses crap =)

Heh, yeah, I've been busy =) and will be moreso I think. I'm off for about a month right now, then a short vacation before the fall semester starts in again. but I should have time for all 5 leagues. I spend more time sitting and waiting right now than anything else =)

I'm always open to requests, if there is something specific you want or need let me know.

Thul 07-03-2004 12:14 PM

Cringer- We'll probably have a better idea when people get back from the holiday. I'll just throw 2 games a week out there as a jumping off point...

RenderR - I figured it out and deleted my original post right when you answered it, of course :) Thanks, though.

Yeah, something antique-like would be cool. I have the picture of the Heisman Trophy in my head for some reason. A aged bronze was the look I was going to try when dabbling with a logo.

As for the styles, I dunno, we don't "need" anything beyond maybe a logo to throw in there, but I'm the kind of guy who likes to play with things and create more unique looks. I'm going to upload and install some other "styles" to the board, you can try them by changing your preferences in the proifle.

If you find one that looks good, let me know =)
