Best War game(s) for the PC?

I've been wanting to get a good war game, so I don't want to get stuck with one that is inferior to another. Thanks.

Depends what you mean by war. A strategy game? A modern wargame? There's a lot of categories. I like Steel Panthers: World at War for a WW2 wargame, it's excellent, has tons of options, and it's free, can be downloaded off the web.

Like Call of Duty, Battlefield, etc.

If you want an action war game, can't go wrong with Call of Duty or the Medal of Honor series. Also, for something involving a bit more strategy, you might want to give the Combat Mission series a try.

You can't go wrong with Battlefield 1942. Also, you can pick up a really cool free mod for the game at fileplanet called Battlefield: Desert Combat. It's basically Operation Iraqi Freedom. Pretty cool stuff. Medal of Honor is OK, but I hear Call of Duty is way better.

I heard Call of Duty was better than Medal of Honor, but I also heard that Call of Duty is a very short game. You can pick up Medal of Honor plus both expansions for the same price as Call of Duty. If you don't mind dated graphics, go with Medal of Honor. You'll get far more gameplay for the same price. Regardless of dated graphics, Medal of Honor is a very fun game.

I enjoyed both Call of Duty and Medal of Honor, but I agree, Call of Duty was too short. Its scripted nature makes it much less fun to replay as well, but it is a blast while you're doing it!

Not quite the kind of games I'm looking for. But thanks.

As an FYI, the term you are looking for is "tactical first-person shooter". Wargames have a different connotation (as pointed to by Sachmo's response).

I probably should have read the thread instead of seeing "wargames" and deciding that I could help.

Or I should have noticed that neither Fritz nor Cougar posted in it. :)

I have no business here...

:D

Call of Duty and Americas Army. AA is free (payed for by your taxes so you bought it whether you like it or not) and produced by the Army. www.americasarmy.com and Call of Duty is great. I've played BF1942 and DC and IMO Americas Army is just more fun than both. Call of Duty on the otherhand, AA is fighting with it for playing time right now.

COD was pretty short as far as the single player, but the multi-player makes up for it IMO. I still play multi-player almost everyday, I love that game. The multi-player has cool levels, a good variety of weapons, and also, you can be British, Russian, or American depending on the level which is nice since most WWII games only include Americans v. Germans.
