Okay, I'm officially impressed by this reference. {And for 10 bonus points: What was the origin of that particular name?} |

Don't be too impressed. I basically never missed rasslin' on TV from the mid 70's to mid 80's. Five of my buddies and I managed to get Ivan Koloff and Alexis Smirnoff to charge us while we were waving two HUGE American flags at them at the Columbus Municipal Auditorium. (Although being charged by Koloff and Smirnoff probably wasn't *nearly* as dangerous as six private school high school kids--two of us black--going to the rasslin' matches in Columbus in the first place. ;) We didn't exactly fit in with the crowd...) Another great moment happened near the beginning of Gulf War I. My brother-in-law was stationed in Saudi Arabia in Desert Shield, and my sister asked me to take my nephew, then around 6 or 7 years old (old enough to understand that his dad was in potential danger) down to the auditorium to watch a big Saturday night card to help get his mind off of it all. We stopped for gas and a slurpee at the convenience store across the street from the auditorium, and were standing in line to pay when none other than Ric Flair and Arn Anderson strolled into the store to buy honey buns and beer (Yeah, this was about 15 minutes before the card was about to start. :p) Anyway, of course my nephew's eyes got as big as saucers and his entire face lit up. Flair noticed my nephew watching him, so he came over, patted his head, bent down, said, "What's happenin' stud?!" and put out his hand to give him five. Ol' Flair earned two fans for life that day. |
This parody thread gets two thumbs up for me. Brilliant reference.

Let's see... he was also the Assassin 2 and in Mid South he used to be called Diamond Dusty Rhodes if I remember right.

AFAIK, the masked character was named for Uvalde, TX where Rhodes was (allegedly?) from. With a little searching this morning, I even found a couple of pics. http://www.cwfarchives.com/Wrestler.php?id=831 The same site has an impressive collection of photos guaranteed to bring back some memories. In the Rhodes set of pics alone, there's shots of: Bob Roop, Bugsy McGraw, Ernie Ladd, The Mongolian Stomper, Harley Race, King Curtis, Pak Song, and one of my all-time favorites Thunderbolt Patterson, just to name a handful. http://www.cwfarchives.com/Wrestler.php?id=35 |
