When I was about 12, I was enrolled by my parents in an Evelyn Wood speed reading course.

I spent two afternoons per week at the class. After two years I was reading more than 5000 words per minute. This was more than 40 years ago.

I am not sure what my speed is today. It varies by the type of reading I do. If it is fiction, I read two-five novels per week. I usually can finish any paperback on a trans con plane flight. If they are technical, complex ideas or computer manuals I read significantly slower (probably 50%).

I find that my speed builds up as I read during a day. I think my comprehension is constant.

One of the down sides to this I have learned is that you must not be your own editor. When I write I tend to leave out words. If I do not read my work out loud my mind inserts those words. The process you learn is to see complete paragraphs rather than words. After a while the main points of the paragraph seems to be highlighted in bold print. The extraneous words are glossed over.

I know in Canada there is no more Evelyn Wood. I would have enrolled my children if there was. It is a great advantage that can be learned. You have the choice of reading a lot more, or finishing that much faster.

I read 3000 words a minute, and Tommy Chong sure can deliver a moving Oscar acceptance speech i tell you what.

Law school has done this to me :( It does come in handy though...

Edit: I was going to say, if this was fiction it would be faster. More complicated stuff, especially with law and things that need to be recalled at a later date, obviously are read slower.

I've always been a slow reader. Whenever I try to read faster (and even when I read at my normal pace), I end up missing words, changing words in my mind, flipping the order of words, etc. etc.

You couldn't get me to read or listen to anything coming from JFK.

450-500 words per minute (above average) - doesn't surprise me too much, I regularly read a book in an evening .... I've always been a voracious reader...

I also took a speed reading class when I was younger and was clocked at about 2,000 words per minute with a 70-80% comprehension level. Needless to say, I finished the statement before the time was up (albeit it was close).

Books? Oh yeah, I've heard of those. They're like the internet in paper form, right? :D

What are you supposed to do if you finish the passage? I got done with about 5 seconds left. I think I skimmed a little, though...not exactly material that interests me a ton.

I got the virtual speed reader one (like 800-950 WPM).

Not that I'm accusing anyone specifically, but when I saw this post my first thought was "I bet the first person reports an above average score, with each subsequent person reporting a higher and higher score until people start claiming they broke the test".

Shorty, if it makes you feel any better I'm a pretty good reader, took the test without cheating, and have no desire to impress strangers on a message board. I got the same score as you.

Now if it had been written in that gangsta language you're always talking in, I probably would have scored about a 3.

It always amazed me how people could read so fast. I read all the time, but the speed of my reading has stayed the same. Any guides or something to help imporve reading speed? I don't need to read 2000 words a minute, but doubling my time would make it so much better. It usually takes me a long time to read a novel. Usually a few weeks (of an hour or two of reading a night). Sometimes I've read a novel in a few days, but that was reading all day long.

I don't know how I got to read so fast...I've never taken any speed reading courses or anything. I absolutely devoured books as a kid though. I got yelled at during language arts classes because I'd have a fictional novel under my desk that I was reading while the teacher was lecturing. I stayed up late at night with a flashlight under my covers reading constantly. I ALWAYS had some kind of book to read.

You read between 350 - 400 words per minute => that was reading the novel. The JFK articke was much more difficult for me.

I usually read a novel in 2 days (ask my wife how amazon.com is making a nice profit with me ;))

Oh, and I usually read French, English needs a little bit more effort.

400-450. I read a decent amount of books as a kid, nothing spectacular though. I did learn to read(for whatever reason) a year or two before most kids do. Maybe that carried on a bit.

800-850. Always read a lot, never took a class.

I'm curious how many of these speed readers can answer these simple questions after doing their "test" (without cheating, of course):

Anybody who read that speech should be able to answer each of these questions without any problem whatsoever.

same score, and I'm exactly the same way. people who can read a book in a day amaze me. it takes me 3 or 4 to read a novel, and that's if I really am focused on finishing it.

I'll be the chump. I'm a slow reader (or according to this test, average.) 200-250 for me. I guess I should stop looking for typos and punctuation errors.

500-550 words a min... reading is cool

Got 350-400 on JFK, 400-450 on Willa Cather (I hated that piece). Faster than I thought. My wife is a speed merchant, though. She can plow through books that would take me a long time to read.
