PC Game Controller Question

I'll be the first to admit, I'm not the arcade type. However, since EA seriously discounted a few of its games, I decided to buy NHL 2004 for $10. Now, the only controller I have is a gamepad 4-button special I used about 3 or 4 years ago, meaning I can only basically shoot and pass with this controller. So, I decided to go out and buy a cheap 12-button controller that will allow me to do many other things during the game and to also play at a higher level (since the 4-button was too easy on the lower levels, but too limiting to allow me to be competitive at the tougher levels).

I bought this one:

A standard Logitech controller. It has both the D-pad and joysticks. Here's the question (finally):

In NHL 2004, it apparently defaults to the left joystick as the directional controller. I freakin hate using the joystick, and would much rather use the D-pad. Does anyone know how to (or if I can) change this? In the game, the only things I can change are which buttons control what action. But directional aspects are not included in what's customizable. Is there something I'm missing? Am I screwed?

You might try looking at the control panel settings for the controller. It might have an option to disable the joysticks and only use the d-pad and force NHL to use the d-pad as the directional controller. Just a stab in the dark though.

Don't have that particular model, but I do have a Logitech and it had a little button on it I could press to switch it back and forth from analog. So if you have any sort of a mode button, try changing it over..you want the analog mode off.

Just make sure you maintain eye contact when using the joystick and you should be fine.

I have that controller, and I have yet to find a way to use the D-Pad in EA Sports games. I can kind of use it when emulating NES games (where it is a must), but its still somewhat off for those.

Then I've got good news for you - I think. Messing around on the logitech website, I found an updated version of their software that allows for swapping of the D-pad/joystick controls. That's the good news. I just haven't had a chance to actually try it in a game yet to see whether it works.

Go here for the software:
