OT - The Missing Bush Year

I realize that many people will avoid this thread simply because it superficially reeks of politics... and I certainly understand that attitude around here.

But honestly, this article from GQ is a humorous, fictional, and surprisingly apolitical discussion of George W. Bush's "missing" year in 1972-73.

I'm not offering this up as a vehicle for a bunch of partisan bullshit about whether Bush is a hero, a deserter, a coward, a champion, or anything in between. I'm offering this up because it's a pretty amusing read.

Enjoy.

Heh

Kinda interesting

...plus, you might join me with a newfound interest in the Harrington College of Design.

It's long. That means it's good. Someday when I don't have a 2 year old, or late tonight, whichever comes first, I will read it.

Long = Good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This time Bush chose to take on the identity of a roadie named Bo Bannister, an itinerant concert-business employee. Though cleaner-cut than most of the Stones' crew, Bannister enthralled his fellow roadies with tales of life on the road with acts that included Chuck Berry and Mel Tormé. Soon, he was given a position of great honor at the Stones' shows: inflating an enormous, forty-five-foot pink plastic penis at the beginning of "Honky Tonk Women"

It all makes sense now.

On the other hand, Bush was able to provide valuable information about Warhol and the Velvets. He even recommended that the government consider exiling Lou Reed to Madagascar. "I don't get his singing," Bush wrote in a SUMS memo. "That's not singing. That's, like, talking. And besides, I think he likes guys."

Bush has not forgotten SUMS. The next time he appears in the White House Rose Garden or steps off Air Force One, notice how he raises his left arm above his head and bends it slightly, as if twisting it into an S curve.

Its clearly fictional. As Quick pointed out above.

Samdari 08-12-2004 02:53 PM

That is fascinating. I wonder if a shred of it is true.

W as deep throat?!? Unbelievable.

Just trying to help.

What you say?

Samdari 08-12-2004 03:33 PM

Ah, I see I did miss a critical word.

Still, it was a very good read.

Far be it from me to criticize, but I think we really missed an opportunity here. This article should have been presented as unquestioned fact. The result debate could have been a UIC goldmine, and it would have been fascinating to see who would have been first to summon the courage to question QuikSand about it.

"McCain had to spend a couple more months in prison. After five years, you'd think it'd be no big deal, but it was. He missed the Super Bowl."

I love it.

Odd that no one else has commented on this. Perhaps just the two of us are favored by the ad server? :D

I'm not complaining... now, where do I enroll....

That would have been a psychological experiment for the ages.

Now, if you will excuse me, I have to finish my application to the Harrington College of Design.

I had a missing year once. I think it was 1986. I can't recall (it was missing after all) the full facts, but I have paperwork I believe that proves I was a member of a special covert organization called the Bureau of Exemplary and Exotic Reconnaissance Services (BEERS). From what I've pieced together, this was a special unit that roamed parts of the nation, using funds obtained by special means on the economy, to find organizations that would participate in the illegal alcohol trade with minors. I think my memory is sketchy either because of the special device they used to erase my memory or to a special ritual at the end of my year of service that involved rubber tubing, a funnel, and a large, metallic drum. I'll pay good money to anyone who can help me recover that lost year.
