time to go lose the wisdom teeth

wish me luck. but the dentist reassured me, saying there was only a SLIM chance i could die, so i feel better.

Chappy 08-17-2004 08:34 AM

I liked it when he told me it may paralyze my face if a nerve is damaged....... But on a brighter note, I went on my lunch break and had 3 pulled, and went right back to work.

hoopsguy 08-17-2004 08:37 AM

Beware the dry socket ... don't let them tell you that you are fine if you are still feeling real pain by the weekend.

Draft Dodger 08-17-2004 08:54 AM

damn - no one told me any of that stuff. I've gotten 2 pulled, and neither one hurt.

albionmoonlight 08-17-2004 08:56 AM

Dry sockets suck. Vicodin was the only thing that helped me.

On the other end of the spectrum, my friend had his pulled and was playing baskeball the next day.

I had all four taken out at the same time and had no problems at all. Best of luck to ya...

I had all four taken out at the same time, and it was one of the worst experiences of my life. Best of luck to ya... ;)

Stick tea bags in the holes.

henry296 08-17-2004 09:56 AM

Use bags of frozen peas or corn as ice bags on the cheeks.

Lathum 08-17-2004 11:19 AM

It's not as bad as people think, however my dentist advised me against doing all 4 at once.

cthomer5000 08-17-2004 11:22 AM

All 4 at once here. It definitely had a real constant, low pain associated with it for a few days. The day I came off medication hurt like a bitch, but I was fine the next day.

The worst part (to me) was the constant taste of blood in my mouth for a few days.

Shepp 08-17-2004 11:22 AM

I had mine pulled by an Army dentist, so I'm sure my chances of dying were slightly higher.;)

Mine must have been really bad then, or else I'm a complete wimp because I was pretty well laid out for a solid week. I had mine done on a Monday, and I didn't feel like moving until Saturday. The drugs didn't help the pain. I couldn't eat much, but I didn't really want to because I felt sick all the time. It's been several years since I had it done, but I remember it was being really, really bad.

I guess I shouldn't say all this right before bigdawg2003 goes under the knife. :D

I think my language was a bit misleading. When I said i was fine "the next day" I meant the 2nd day off medication. I would say that was day 5 or 6 total. I was definitely a lump for about 2 days though, I just slept a whole lot. :)

JeeberD 08-17-2004 11:38 AM

You're just a wimp. :D

When I got mine taken out I took the Tylenol 3 that was prescribed only once, and that was right after the srugry. After that I did fine with just ibuprofin and only missed two days of work. Just keep iced down, don't use a straw for ANYTHING, keep the sockets clean, and basically follow the doctors orders...

cthomer5000 08-17-2004 11:41 AM

Obvioulsy the degree to which they are impacted (in my case, very) matters a lot. Two of mine had to be crushed into pieces to be removed. Some other people just have straight pulls with no real issue.

Or I'm just a wimp. :)

JeeberD 08-17-2004 11:51 AM

Actually, I was calling Cuckoo a wimp. You just got in the way.

Of course, if the shoe fits... :D

Okay, Okay, I'll admit to being a wimp too. But... mine also had to be crushed, and both of my bottom ones were almost completely under my rear molars, at an inward angle. Apparently, the guy had a whale of a time getting them out.

duckman 08-17-2004 12:02 PM

I would suggest getting antibiotics when you get any teeth pulled because of deep seeded bacteria that can't be reach by dentists. I had my wisdom teeth pulled about ten days before I got sick. My doctors believe that is how I got the infection in my leg. I was lucky because if that bacteria settles in your heart of one of your lungs then you could get in BIG trouble.

I had all of mine pulled at once. There was about 3 seconds of extreme pain, but after that didn't feel anything.

bigdawg2003 08-17-2004 12:15 PM

alright

fortunately im still alive without paralysis to the face, although the bottom of my mouth and chin is completely numb. still got a couple pieces of cotton in my mouth, but its minor

i got a prescription for vicodin, so if i'm in any pain, ill be ok. doc suggested to take one at some point regardless if i'm in pain.

now all i gotta worry about is dry socket (more likely for women to get it than men. yay!) and packing up for school. leaving on friday.

I had the same thing, he drilled them to break them up and then suctioned out the pieces until he could get a good grip on what was left and yanked the stumps. It was not good times.

Back off the Tylenol, Jeebs...it's murder on your spelling! ;)

sabotai 08-17-2004 04:53 PM

Painkillers...they are your friends. My perscription was for Oxy...that's good stuff.

BigJohn&TheLions 08-17-2004 07:43 PM

Tylenol 4 rocks...

One hint. Don't try to eat soup later that day. With your mouth still froze it'll run right out...

sounds just like my story. he planned to get all 4 out at once, but the first 3 took him so damn long he had to call it quits and make me come back. I was laid up for about a week as well

ugh... I would've stabbed mine with the dental drill if he had told me I had to come back to have the fourth one removed.

Ensure is a very good product to have in the house at times like these. You won't feel like eating but it is pretty clear you need good nutrition while recovering. A couple Ensures a day should give you a good boost as you heal.
