HBO's Entourage
 

I'm just wondering who else watches this show and what you think about it. I like the show pretty well. I recorded on the episodes on my computer and will put them on DVD whenever I get around to buying a burner.

Anyway, I enjoy about the first 20 minutes of the show, but it just seems like the writers can't figure out a way to end each show. The first 15 minutes are normally greatly paced and the jokes are great, but then its starts to get formulaic as the writers try to nicely end the show. Jeremy Piven is freaking awesome, the best he's been since Serendipity (the only good thing about that movie). "Let's hug it out, bitch" was great.

I think its the best thing HBO has going right now, since I just don't like Ali G, and Six Feet Under, while good 60% of the time, has about 15-20 minutes each show where its just unwatchable (mainly the mother's story line).

Any thought's on this show, or is it just Sex in the City for guys?

I don't like the show. I saw a few episodes and I just can't be bothered to watch it again, unless there is nothing else on.

Jeremy Piven is definitely the best part of this show, overall I think it's pretty good.

I like what ive seen for it....I think watching "Ryan from unhapilly ever after" acting intelligentlly is really weird

I enjoy it a lot, but the writing definitely sucks. Expect it to be much better in season 2 when HBO starts to put some money into that aspect of the show.

I stopped watching after episode #1. I like Piven, but the writing was awful.

New season started last night.

just wanted to chime in and say this show has improved exponentially. its a must-see for me now. great season so far!

I love this show, I've watched it from teh beginning. And thanks to On Demand I don't even need to get HBO. I just tune in every 3 months when HBO gives out a free weekend and catch up

Hearing about this show has made me finally realize why I don't watch a lot of TV anymore. If I see a commercial for a show and I can't tell what the show is about, I don't want to watch it. In the commercials I've seen for Entourage, it just looks like a bunch of guys who share a wardrobe and have way too much money saying random things to each other. Perhaps it's hilarious, but I've had no impetus to start watching. I didn't like Sex and the City at all, but when I saw the commercials advertising it, at least I knew what it was about. I watched it once, hated it, watched it one more time, still hated it, and never watched it again.

Anyway, my point is that I'm willing to give Entourage a shot, but I want to know what to expect. Can someone give me at least a general idea of what the show is about or at least what these characters do? Are they actors or musicians or performance artists or what? I gather that they're some kinds of entertainers, but that may be off the mark, too. Help?

In June, HBO presents Season Two of Entourage, the hit comedy series executive produced by Mark Wahlberg that takes a look at the day-to-day life of Vincent (Vince) Chase, a hot young actor in modern-day Hollywood, and his entourage. He's brought with him from their hometown in Queens, NY: manager Eric, half-brother Drama, and friend Turtle. The series draws on the experiences of industry insiders to illustrate both the heady excesses of today's celebrity lifestyle, as well as the difficulty of finding love and success in the fast track of show biz. Now that the boys are getting used to the perks of stardom, Eric, along with superagent Ari, keep Vince's star rising while making sound decisions for a long-lasting career in a world of fleeting fame.

Adrian Grenier ("Drive Me Crazy," "Hart's War") stars as Vince. Kevin Connolly ("Antwone Fisher," "John Q") plays Eric, Vince's closest confidant who's learning the rules of the business as he tries to help Vince make the right choices and keep his trajectory aimed high. Kevin Dillon ("The Doors," "Platoon") plays Vince's half-brother Drama, whose own acting aspirations have been eclipsed by Vince's success. Jerry Ferrara ("Grounded for Life," "Leap of Faith") plays Turtle, the house manager, who's always up for a good time. Jeremy Piven ("Old School," "The Larry Sanders Show") plays Ari, Vince's aggressive, high-powered agent, who clashes with Eric over his client's decisions.

Also appearing in ENTOURAGE are Debi Mazar ("Goodfellas," "The Tuxedo") as Vince's publicist Shauna and Monica Keena ("Undeclared") as Eric's ex-girlfriend Kristen.

Ok, 5 main characters.

Vincent Chase (Adrien Grenier) is the star. He's an up and coming actor. Johnny 'Drama' Chase (Kevin Dillon) is his older brother, who is a washed up actor. Everytime Vincent gets a gig, Drama always tries to get in a small part. Eric (Kevin Connolly) is Vincent's best friend since childhood, and is now Vincent's manager. He talks to Vincent's agent Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven) and makes all of the decisions, not the agent, which kind of pisses Ari off because Eric is a nobody in the business but now represents a young hit star. Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) is also a childhood friend of Vincent, Drama and Eric and tags along, the 4 of them living in a house living off of Vincent's fortune.

I think you've hit on the main criticism of the show, which is that none of the character's have anything at stake. The counter to that is that it's a comedy, and what did Seinfeld or the Friends have at stake?

I'm actually surprised that the show has a broad appeal outside of LA (and that's Los Angeles, not Louisiana, Pumpy ;)). To me, much of the humor is LA-centric, and I'm not sure I'd get a lot of the references if I didn't live here.

The basic premise is that you have an actor (the next big thing) who grew up in Queens. When he hits it big he brings his entourage out to LA with him. The entourage consists of E, who serves as his manager and is the down to earth guy on the show, Turtle, who is his "man" and handles things like making sure the fridge is stocked with beer and other angles like that, and his brother Johnny Drama, who is a washed up actor, starring on Melrose Place and other "classic" early 90s shows, but trying to make it again.

Jeremy Piven is the agent, who typically steals the show with rants and antics.

Piven is great as a high strung agent. You want to hate him because he is a money grubbing agent but secretly you love him and think he would be great to hang out with.

Kevin Dillon's character is great. He plays Vince's brother who was an 80's actor and is trying to make it back into the game.

FWIW, even if those 3 posts didn't interest you, it's notable to think that nearly minutes after you request some additional info we give you three (1 professional, 2 on the whim) reviews of the show.

There's nothing at stake. Even given the whole drama of "will he get Aquaman or not?" the only reason there was anything on the line was because he bought a multi-million dollar mansion.

It's a light show, which is fine. It's a comedy, and I laugh at it and am entertained. That still doesn't mean there's anything at stake for the characters.

It makes me really want to see a movie called Queen's Boulevard. :)

I think the show is hilarious and fills the much needed comedy gap created by the absence of Chapelle's show. Every episode this season has had some laugh-out-loud moments for me. The whole is probably less than its component parts, but that's because it is a comedy - nothing is really at stake, but it is fun to watch.

I concur. I actually think the guys in show have even become serviceable actors as it has worn on. Originally, Piven was the only one who seemed to have an idea on what to do, but I think the Unhappily Ever After kid has really stepped his game of lately. Even Turtle is a decent actor (his lines aren't nearly as poorly executed as last year).

I heard HBO was planning on producing more than 12 shows next year, something like a normal network run

I really enjoy Entourage. My wife hates it.

Its just fun, I dont know any other way to describe it. It has soap opera type arcs where you need to pay attention for several epsiodes to catch what is going on, but it also has jokes for that individual epsiode.

Its also amusing IMO to see celebrities mocking themselves, Bob Saget was great.

I like the show as well. I agree with the prior statement that the first 15 minutes or so are well-paced but that the show drags towards the end episode after episode. It's great to see who might pop up (Bob Saget) but I'm not sure there's much room for character development. The other three basically live off of Vince. Vince makes a new movie, they get more money. It doesn't seem like the writers have a lot for the other characters to do except put Turtle in an X-box tourney. It's an enjoyable show, though.

I like Entourage and consider it the best HBO comedy since Larry Sanders. The show is pretty light and airy but I still find myself looking forward to the next episode.

Well I disagree with part A because I think this show ends way too quickly. I always want more.

As for B...it might not actually be "development" of characters, but they have definitely improved the comedic use of them. I'm dying in basically every scene Drama is in, and when they can do things like convince Turtle that he's gonna be drug tested for a god damn XBox tourney I'll keep eating it up.

I'd have to say, the Mandy Moore cameos was one of the more unexpected cameos yet. I mean, she pretty wholesome and mainstream for a show like this... but I would totally stalk her in a heartbeat. Probably the cutest young actress in Hollywood... her or Rachel McAdams.

Mandy Moore is amazingly sexy. I'm pretty sure in real life she is going out with Zach Braff though, so he has mad game obviously.

I never fancied Zach Braff as a real ladies man.

Maybe my favorite episode of all-time tonight.. absolutely hilarious, I didn't want it to end.

I really enjoyed last night's show also. I think part of it is because I laugh at about everything that Drama does. He is quickly becoming one of my favorite characters on any show. I enjoy Ari and Vince and think Turtle has some good lines, but is it just me or has "E" gotten completly unbearable this season? Last season he was sort of the straightheaded friend that kept the guys in line, now he is going head to head with the Hollywood brass. I find nothing believeable about his character. (The other guys are strecthes, but I could see all of them really existing.)

I just did a search to see what other shows Kevin Dillon has been in and it says he was in 3 episodes of '24, season 2'. Anyone remember his role? I can't wait for the Matt Dillon cameo appearance.

Detroit Rock City came out in '99? Damn I feel old.

I didn't think it was possible, but this show is getting better and better each time. I mean they actually have James Cameron on the show semi-regularly? WTF? And Mandy Moore? And Julie Cooper freaking guested. This may end up being the greatest show of all time.

I actually thought this week's episode was the worst since the first season.

Don't get me wrong, it was still decent. It just seemed to revert to earlier annoyingness with a maximum ammount of whining. I didn't like E much in the first season, but he has gotten a lot better. Last night was a bit of a step back, for me, in that regard. Ari is always hilarious, though.

The Ari and E conversations make me laugh.

I think the show would be better if it revolved around Ari.

Everything just turns out too well for the other guys all the time. Too predictable.
