Fun things to do in Tulsa?

It's looking like I'll be in Tulsa the week of Sept 13-17...

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Alf 08-18-2004 06:00 PM

Isn't there a country music concert ?

Franklinnoble 08-18-2004 06:09 PM

Cow tipping is a lot more fun than people give it credit for.

CamEdwards 08-18-2004 06:33 PM

Cain's Ballroom and the Brady Theater are the places where the alt-rock bands typically play.

There's a pretty good art museum (Gilcrease).

Ummmm....

there's a couple of malls there. And a minor league baseball team. You might be able to catch a University of Tulsa football game.

That's about it. The only time I ever got up to Tulsa was to go get ripped at the Tulsa Press Club.

Flame Eater 08-18-2004 06:35 PM

Get back in the car and leave Tulsa?

Easy Mac 08-18-2004 06:35 PM

Run around screaming

I'M IN TULSA!!! I'M IN TULSA!!!

VPI97 08-18-2004 06:37 PM

Yeah...this trip is going to be great... sigh...

Alf 08-18-2004 06:51 PM

It will be during the IHOF draft, so you'll have plenty things to do anyway(s) :D

Cuckoo 08-18-2004 06:58 PM

Clearly some people here have never been to Tulsa... :)

duckman 08-18-2004 06:59 PM

I would suggest....alcohol....yeah, plently of alcohol.

CamEdwards 08-18-2004 06:59 PM

OH! I just remembered...

get on I-44 going East. About an hour northeast of Tulsa is the world's largest McDonald's. Now THAT'S entertainment.

Also there are strip clubs... if you're into that sort of thing. :)

Cam, there's always alcohol.....lots of alcohol.

WSUCougar 08-18-2004 07:22 PM

Wasn't Tulsa where a lot of the oil barons had big mansions?

Ksyrup 08-18-2004 07:26 PM

A lawyer I work with got sent to Tulsa on a case a few years back, and he said he couldn't believe how early everything closed. The streets were empty by 6pm. This guy isn't exactly Mr. Excitement, either, but even he was bored to tears in that town. Good luck.

Joe 08-18-2004 07:39 PM

you could go door knocking for President Bush

SnowMan 08-18-2004 07:39 PM

Shark porn.

Easy Mac 08-18-2004 07:43 PM

Wow, you just lost all your street cred by referencing Friends.

SnowMan 08-18-2004 07:54 PM

Whoa, I had street cred??? If only I'd known.......

SnowMan 08-18-2004 07:55 PM

Dola...btw, you just lost yours by recognizing the reference....or something...

Buccaneer 08-18-2004 07:56 PM

Been to Tulsa. Don't want to go back.

Lucky Jim 08-18-2004 08:15 PM

Tulsa is a great place to live. (I shit you not.) But yeah it's not exactly full of touristy hotspots. There are some good bars downtown. I would also check out Cherry St. for some good food and a few other good bars. I'd check out www.visittulsa.com to find whatever you may be looking for. I grew up there, living on the east coast the last five years has made defending Tulsa's not that badness a full time job for me, and honestly, it ain't that bad. (End nostalgic delusions...)

I know Tulsa quite well, and I would agree that it is a great place to live. Cherry St. is a good recommendation, and there are some good places downtown, especially if you enjoy theatre or music. There is the Tulsa Philharmonic and the Tulsa Performing Arts Center, both of which have some quality stuff.

The shopping center of town (Malls and restaurants) is around 71st and Memorial if you're interested in that. Riverside is also a pretty nice area for leisure activities. If you like culture, there are a couple of museums (Gilcrease and Philbrook) that are actually pretty good as well.

I think that covers everything. If you want to know something specific, just ask. :)

vex 08-18-2004 09:11 PM

Head north and visit me?

GrantDawg 08-18-2004 09:21 PM

My wife has always wanted to visit Tulsa. I have no idea why.

duckman 08-18-2004 09:34 PM

And don't forget the alcohol.

Aardvark 08-19-2004 10:51 AM

Both museums are quite good. Gilcrease has a pretty good Native American collection (though not nearly as good as the one at the Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City), and Philbrook is probably one of the prettiest museums I've ever seen. It is build as an Italianate Villa, and has an extensive formal garden in back. Well worth the visit if you are in Tulsa.

Went to Tulsa last year to watch the UTEP mens hoops team spank the Golden Hurricane. My bro, sis, and I went to this 50's diner before the game to grab a bite to eat and we ordered Corona's to drink. They brought out Coroa Light's instead and gave us mugs filled with ice to drink them with.

Weird place, Tulsa...

This reminds me of when I was out at a Mexican restaurant last weekend and saw a little asian man drinking a Budweiser longneck. With a straw.

Airhog 08-19-2004 04:58 PM

drive to okc and goto the state fair!

When I moved to Oklahoma, I remember someone telling me about the State Fair and how good it was. Then another friend said "don't forget the Tulsa State Fair"

I looked at them and tilted my head. . . "but Tulsa isn't a state"

I had to go down to Tulsa to see it for myself. It was depressing.

The river is a decent place in Tulsa to walk down. (be sure you are on the right side of it)

There is a place called the rose garden or something that is very beautiful this time of year. You can always drive by the Oral Roberts campus and laugh at the strange buildings and the gigantic stone praying hands.

No. Forget that. Alcohol. Alcohol will make the pain of Tulsa go away. Maybe.

I've been there. I think it's called Metro Diner if I remember right, and it's over by the TU campus. I don't know for sure, but I heard it closed down.

Yes, I would suggest plenty of it while in Tulsa.

Yeah, I think that's the place. Pretty close to campus...

You heard it closed down? Weird, when we went in February the place was hopping...

Any beer they serve cold has to be 3.2% alcohol or less. Corona light qualifies, Corona does not. The only place to buy real Corona is at a liquor store, and they cannot keep it cold. Same with Sam Adams and other less than mass market brews.

I lived in Tulsa for over two years, and I can assure you there is nothing fun to do. Unless you have fun going to church. You could probably do that any day of the week, and never get to all the churches during a tourist or business trip length stay.

Of the museums mentioned, I would suggest the Gilcrease, as it concentrates on western and Indian art (note: while in OK they are Indians, not Native Americans) and what they hell, you are in Oklahoma. The minor league sports teams are all fun, but the baseball team ends the week before, its out of Arena season, and the hockey team starts in October. The state fair is late September/early October.

If you like to play bingo, you can many nights at the creek nation bingo. It is just south of ORU. The 40 ft high bronze praying hands statue in front of ORU is a must see, if you insist on visiting Tulsa.

In a way, I joke about there being nothing fun to do (the Oktoberfest is probably the best civic festival I have ever seen) but in all seriousness, it is a very quiet town on weeknights, when you will be there. It probably is a very nice place to live - if you were born there. If not, the locals will reject you, and you will live a lonely, miserable existence. What are you doing in Tulsa for a week?

I'm going there for a week-long series of "information sharing" meetings with one of the other UPS subsidiaries. We use a product they wrote, but I've modded the hell out of it so that it actually does useful things...so now they want to pick my brain. :) Their office is on S. Memorial near (I think) 81st Street, so from looking at a map of Tulsa, I don't think I'll be all that near the downtown area that some of you guys have been talking about.

Apathetic Lurker 08-20-2004 05:18 PM

Strip clubs ? good thing I am moving to Macalester in a year! Something to do on boring evenings in the country

Easy Mac 08-20-2004 05:27 PM

No, but you'll be right by the commercial district of town which is 71st and Memorial. There's Woodland Hills Mall, plenty of restaurants, movie theatres, and gaming places. You should be able to find something to do.

It was always popular when I was there too. I actually haven't been in that area in at least a year, but someone told me that it closed, although I'm not sure if I believe them.

You've made no mention of massage parlors, strip clubs, and adult bookstores...

Sorry, I haven't lived in Tulsa since before I was in college so I have little knowledge of those.

But, I bet Cam can help with that... :D

DOLA

Now that you mention it actually, there is a Chinese massage parlor in a shopping center at 21st and 129th, I think. My brother, who used to run an American General Finance there, said that it is one of those good kind of massage parlors. :D

GrantDawg 08-20-2004 06:58 PM

Where do the guys in jean shorts hang out in Tulsa? VPI might want to hang out there? :)

We all wear jean shorts down here, and didn't know it was bad until Ksyrup posted his thread. But VPI should feel right at home. :)

Nothing like a massage with a happy ending. :D

Tasan 08-20-2004 07:41 PM

I'm not going to take the time and read this all, because I've been away for a few days(weeks, whatever its been) so I'll offer the best thing there is to do in Tulsa, someone else may have already.....

Leave.

There you have it.
Boy I'm in a cynical mood tonight.

Easy Mac 08-20-2004 07:42 PM

All it took was 4 replies and you could have been done.

Yah, in the evenings, that part of town is much more active than downtown.

At least, it was five years ago.
