BOOM - Summerall into the season

Just heard Theisman explain the short yardage guessing game to summerall, and explained that as the season goes on he'll (Summerall) will see Paul get ALL of those calls right before the chains come out. I like Mike Patrick, seems like the game is almost too fast for Pat on ESPN.

I hope Mike Patrick has a speedy recovery. Pat Summerall and Patrick are my favorite play-by-play guys ever (Summerall for his low key delivery, even in big games, Patrick just has a great voice for sports). I don't think Pat fits with Theismann and McGuire though.

That said, it's so nice to listen to him do an Eagles game again. I missed that...even preseason, I enjoy it.

I absolutely love Pat Summerall, but the game has been too fast for him for close to 10 years now...

Yea, Summerall was great in his day, but he's been needing to retire for about a decade now...

Quick Pat impression, on, say, a 75 yard pass play from Culpepper to Moss, but only after Culpepper scrambled out of a blitz, nearly sacked, all the way to the sideline, waves Randy across the field, fires into triple coverage, Moss nabs it, and then eludes DB's for a good 50 yards en route to a TD:

"Culpepper take the snap........ [15 second delay.]..... Moss..... [5 second delay] Touchdown. Jets.. I beg your pardon, touchdown Vikings for Santana Moss.... [10 second delay.] I beg your pardon, that was Randy Moss, not Santana Moss, with the touchdown for the Jets... [5 second delay.] I beg your pardon, the Vikings get the touchdown, of course."

It's sad to hear most of the time, quite frankly, as it makes me cringe, and I can't help but think what the other guys in the booth next to him are thinking when he calls the games...

perfect Bryce - that's him to a T. at least we don't have to hear plugs for Murder...[long pause] She Wrote.

Summerall while being behind it seems is still in a way a joy to listen to. He doesn't try to become the focus of the game, instead merely a background voice and helps you along the play. Too many t.v guys want to become a one man, hear my thoughts, I am the best, everyone esle is wrong discussions instead of calling the game simply, effectively and with class.

Joe - "Russ Grimm is the only guy i know who left football and dint get smaller. Joe JAcoby is another guy."

Pat - pause....."Would you believe that he was a hog?"

Joe - "And i thank him for protecting me all of those years."

PAt - "who are you?"

Summerall used to be pretty solid in his day. Its really sad actually what has become of him. If nothing else, its a GREAT reason never to become an alcholic. His brain cells are absolutely fried.

Has this been confirmed? I heard the same comment, but it almost sounded like a slip up, because Theismann paused a spilt-second, like he realized halfway through that the only way Summerall was going to see that was if he watched from his living room. I didn't see the pre-game or most of the game (well, I saw it, but couldn't hear it), so maybe they made some sort of formal announcement that I missed.

I don't care one way or the other. Summerall has definitely lost a few steps, but it's exaggerated when he's flanked by the motor mouths on SNF. He wouldn't be THAT bad if he was with, say, Troy Aikman or something.

Flasch186 08-27-2004 07:11 AM

no formal announcement, same thing you heard.

I think it's great to see Summerall in there, even if he's not at his best. I equate his voice more than anyone's with football.

Swaggs 08-27-2004 11:38 AM

I'll take Summerall, warts and all, over anyone else out there. His voice and demeanor are perfect for me. He does not try to overshadow the game and is not "gimmicky."
