Bush the Uniter? (Band Aids at convention)

Then at his convention his supporters where Band-Aids with purple hearts on them. Not blaming Bush for this as I'm sure he is only supportive of someone's war time efforts but I think that this just goes to show how divided America is right now and how willing people are to poke fun at someone's wounds received during war, regardless of what those wounds resulted in. Regardless, on the individual(s) who wore the band-aids I think it was a pretty low reflection of themself.

Kinda like Kerry's behavior since he got back home ... which is kinda what opens up the whole band-aid thing I guess.

no need to address that discussion as I believe we exhausted that in another thread. Were obviously going to believe what we want on that note:

You - it was dishonorable and traitorous.

Me - he was standing up for what he believed in.

BTW - Now Bush says we cant win the war on Terror (which I agree with him when he says, "In the conventional sense") but would that be conidered a flip or a flop or not at all?

JonInMiddleGA 08-31-2004 07:32 AM

FWIW, I'd say that his comments do indeed appear to fall into the category of a flip-flop, and I'm afraid it may ultimately cost him more votes that he had secured than anything he's said/done in the past 4 years.

If the comment is hammered home often enough & well enough, and if he's forced to defend and/or reiterate the remark, I believe it ultimately may keep some voters home on Election Day. I believe Karl Rove phrased it pretty well -- "We're in a war, so you got a lot of people who say, `I don't like the fact that we're in a war. But I want to win the war"

Off-hand, it is probably only the second time in his term that I've had a strong urge to smack him upside the head and say "WTF were you thinking?"

OK--I'll bite. What was the first?

As to the general discussion. I think that it is uncool for the conventioneers to in any way mock a war vets service. We all have family and friends in the military. It sickens me to see honor in combat mocked because of partisian politics.

However, I am really no more or less disgusted than I was when left wingers turned Paul Wellstone's memorial service into a tacky political rally. Wellstone was a great man--regardless of whether one believed in his populist politics. It sickened me to see his memory abused by those who were supposed to be his friends and allies.

So you really don't have to look to far to see straw men on both sides of the aisle to attack.

But, I think it may be better to acknowledge that it may be an 'unwinnable' battle, than to try and delude people otherwise. Rationally, how could we ever expect to totally stop terrorism? He is merely adapting to a changing reality (or is it perception?)

Noop 08-31-2004 07:53 AM

Bush = Bad
Kerry = Bad

Vote = Kerry lesser of two evils.

His "guest-worker" immigration proposal.

I'm not sure if I've ever heard anything from the mouth of any President that left me more incredulous, easily the most "Have you lost your mind?" moment with a sitting President I can recall in my 37 years.

{Note: Other Presidents have said/done things I disagreed with more, just none have surprised me so thoroughly with a disagreement that came out of left field}

Vegas Vic 08-31-2004 08:01 AM

It's really funny to see this band-aid mockery of Kerry's purple hearts coming from delegates who represent the party of the chickenhawks.

The same way you deal with rattlesnakes.

JonInMiddleGA 08-31-2004 08:04 AM

Good Lord VV, could you at least reduce the total height if you're going to post fucking garbage?

Ah, wait a minute, I know how to fix that problem.

edit to add: When in the hell did VV become an admin/moderator?

I couldnt agree with you more.

Cringer 08-31-2004 08:39 AM

You know what sucks? We have to do this again in 4 more years. Yes, that should be a good thing, but this is getting to be tiresome. Both parties make me sick...........

panerd 08-31-2004 08:55 AM

To be real honest outside of FOFC I really don't hear anything political at all. (I will amdit I do choose Seinfeld over the nightly news) Every once in a while somebody at work will discuss why they are voting for Kerry or Bush, but it is usually on a much simpler level than the "discourse" ever gets around here. It has been said before and I believe it to be true... My coworker feels no need to be an asshole and tell me how big an idot I am for voting for Kerry, and me the same with him for Bush. Unfortunatly, the internet sort of removes these social barriers.

It's fitting that this vile bunch, who consider spending five days in NYC to be an act of heroism, would mock the sacrifices of tens of thousands.

I hope these delegates use defective condoms while demonstrating their version of family values to their AIDS-infected prostitiutes.

The main purpose of the modern political convention is for the party faithful to get together, party, get drunk, and take cheap shots at the opposition. As a cheap shot, at least it was creative.

Staying outside the politics of it all, this is exactly how I feel. Where somoene finds the balls to call out a veteran with numerous accolades is beyond me. If he questions his medals, you're indiciting the military, not him.

I'm by no means a pro-military guy in general, but I have very close friends in the service, and this level of disrespect for what they do is indefensible, IMHO.

Flasch186 08-31-2004 01:15 PM

Well, now Bush says we will when the war on Terror (Rove mustve slapped him around a bit)...thank goodness, now I can sleep tonight.

Ok Jim we now know what your next game is unless the curve ball is you can actually vote in TCY which I doubt because you could be saving that just incase your political sim doesn't do as well. So unless you want me to continue my wild guessing you might as well spill the beans after all we are your loyal subjects. :)

Vote = Bush lesser of two evils. At least with him, I know what I'm going to get.

I'm in the camp that'd rather vote for Bush because he is a known evil. I think I can put up with the crap he does, that I don't like for another four years. With Kerry, I don't know if that's the case.
