Just saw another bad movie
 

"Hero" just horrible. Once you start seeing guys flying around you know its a bad movie. Also the acting was so overblown. I think I'm going to have to start boycotting movies about historical east Asia after seeing this movie and The Last Samauri with Tom Cruise. Once in my life I would like to see a historically accurate movie. At least in the Last Samauri there was no fighters flying towards eachother.

I agree. I don't know how that movie recieved such good reviews. The Last Samauri may not have been historically accurate, but it was still good.

Uhhh... the movie wasn't meant to be historically accurate. At least, I don't think. For what it was, I thought it was good.

I don't see why someone would want to see a completely historically accurate movie anyway.. You already know how its gonna end..

I thought Hero was pretty good. That's the way my family tells our stories. For example, if my brother and I were to go out fishing one weekend, have a few nibles on the line and hall in a single ten or eleven inch trout, I'm sure when we returned and told the story to a captive audience that we wouldn't bore them with how we sat in a fishing boat without catching fish for the better part of two days. Instead, our story would focus on the portion of our trip where we caught a fish, and by the time we were done telling it, we'd have probably exagerated the size of the fish (etc...).

I'd also like to point out that at the end of the movie, after the main character had finished telling his story, that he wasn't able to dodge/deflect all those arrows like he had in the first version of his story at the village (when he was on top of the building deflecting the arrows). So, I thought the whole point was that he was full of shit with most everything that he said, like I usually am.

What I enjoyed most was the excellent job with some of the scenes (not really the fighting). Like the one fight between the two women where the trees were brilliant orange and then later a deep red. I'm not sure why I liked those parts so much, but I enjoyed them.

I think the way to approach this kind of movie is that "once you start seeing guys flying around..." you immediately drop any pretense that the movie is going to be or even aims to be a historically accurate movie about pretty much anything. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I never really got the impression that it was supposed to be historically accurate at all, especially after watching the trailers with guys flying around.

It's sort of like people getting ticked off at animated Disney films about historical characters (see: Pocohantas) for not being historically accurate. The moment animals start talking and singing, historical accuracy is no longer at issue.

Also,the guys flying around = bad movie doesn't hold. "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" had dudes flying around and it was great. Not to mention the first "Matrix" movie and the "Bride With White Hire." Aint nothing wrong with a little wire-fu.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was also a bad movie. I just don't like the fact that directors like to use that bull kind of special effects in their movie without explaining WHY the characters have the ability to do it in the first place. At least the Matrix explained it. My historically accurate rant was just a general rant, not particularly towards this movie. Although I would like to point out that in the beginning and end there is some notion that this whole story is supposed to be like some sort of legend. I have to agree with the set design in the movie was pretty brilliant. The look of the movie was very good and the twists in the story were good too. I just found it a little too over dramatic and the fight scenes to be a little annoying. Thats just my opinion.

That is because people who like history like to see those stories and events that they read in books and learn about in school come to life. Kind of like Spiderman fans like to see the character come to life on screen. And also, 90% of the time when its a type of movie that has a good guy and a bad guy, you know whos going to win anyways.

In the Asian tradition of fantasy storytelling, the heroes can fly. That's the same thing as dismissing Santa Claus as "bull" because he has flying reindeers.

well, i'm obviously not saying they should take it to extremes.. like alien's with plasma lasers landing in the alamo and equipping daniel boone and friends with them to beat back the indians..

I like history.. i like reading about it.. but i really can't think of a good history movie off the top of my head that would be a top 10 movie choice.. ya know.. i take that back.. blackhawk down was a good movie, and it had embellished parts in it

well, i do think they embellished kevin bacon's character having... a std if i recall.. other then that.. i think you are right

Kevin Bacon's character isn't the one who was sick. It was the married guy who got ill.

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is in my top 10 favorite movies.

I remember my wife having a bunch of girls come over and I thought, I gotta get out of here. (Having a lot of chicks in the house is cool, having a bunch of your wife's friends in the house is just a nightmare.) So I escape the house and went to the movies, decided on CT/HD and loved it. I do agree that some of the martial arts were hoaky, though.

Nothing was more hoaky than the 'martial arts' in the Matrix movies. Actiually, the same guy did the choreography of both CTHD and Matrix but at least the former was in its element being the softer Northern, Wudan-style martial arts.

Look up wuxia movies, Sharpie.. at least it will tell you what to avoid..

Many kung fu movies have the flying characters. If you go rent a bunch of them, I guarantee you will see it in >50%. I think it's pretty damn cool, and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was definately cool. I don't think you are looking for history when you 1) watch a Quentin Tarantino movie, 2) watch a kung fu movie.

Quentin Tarentino had nothing to do with this film other than getting Harvey Weinstein off his ass and releasing it. I mean it was nominated for an academy award in 2003 and here Miramax was still holding on to it, thinking of ways to edit it.

As for no explanation for why they can leap, I believe that it is assumed the people watching it know about wuxia. I'm Chinese and I guess I growing up reading these type of stories that it just seems natural.

The reason why the people can "fly" in wuxia movies is the belief that a person who studies in the martial arts can achieve the state of shengong. Basically if you can get your mind and body into perfect harmony you'll be able to do "superhuman" stuff.

i think the story was secondary to the visuals.

in fact, i think the story was only there to get us to see these beautiful fights and images.

the story bored me, but i left liking it just because that was some stuff id never ever seen before, even in CTHD.

Just my opnion, but frankly, those who compain about far eastern based movies sucking generally
A) Don't understand a thing about far eastern storytelling
B) Don't realize that going to the movies is NOT about accuracy, its about entertainment
C) Should read up a bit on the movie itself and catch a few trailers (for example, EVERY trailer for this movie showed people flying around, I mean c'mon, if that cheeses you off on a film, why the f*** did you go?)
