New low for ESPN

In my days as an impressionable aspiring broadcaster, I idolized ESPN. Watching their "Silver Anniversary" special, I've noticed two things:

1) The old clips showing the 1980s and early 1990s ESPN and SportsCenter remind me how good the newtwork used to be. it shows that the on-air talent had a committment to the story, striving for excellence and wanting ESPN to be the best "news" network on cable. Of course, the cynic in me says that it is epidemic of an overall decline in broadcaster journalism, but I think ESPN has been hit hard by a move to make its talent the stars rather than the product. There was a moment during tonight's broadcast I think captured where ESPN went off the beam -- during the 1980s, they worked to attract people to the network who didn't watch a lot of sports. But now with so many different places to get sports, they now want to merely do it different than Fox does or CNN does, not necessarily better.

2) If this movie "Hustle" isn't the biggest steaming pile of crap ever, I'll be stunned. Can't believe that is Tom Sizemore in the 30 cent hairpiece. Single most embarrasing thing I've seen an actor do. I don't feel bad for him -- I feel bad for his family and friends who have to find someway to look him in the eye. The clips they have shown so far have all the polish of my sixth-grade play, except worse.

End rant.

DJ Stuey Scott starting signing some rap during SportsCenter that had nothing to do with the highlight. F him.

it's amazing how much I loathe ESPN after having it be almost the only thing I watched. My wife reminds me about how I got her into the habit of waking up, turning on SportsCenter and watching the reruns hour after hour. I'd plan my night TV viewing on which SC to watch.

I have a tough time stomaching even ESPNews now. Regular SportCenter is not even watchable.

Kind of similar to the 180 degree turnaround (for the worse) that MTV pulled, but I liked ESPN in its prime a lot more than I liked MTV when it showed videos.

Does Sizemore beat up any hookers in this movie?

NFL Total Access on NFL Network is much better than current Sportscenter (and it is only about the NFL, which is the sport about which I care the most).

Thought the Silver Anniversay Special was very well done. How I long for the old days of Sportscenter.
