Anyone already bored by the football season?
 

Television is destroying football. There are far too many commercial timeouts. People complain about baseball, but a football game now easily takes over 3 1/2 hours to complete. I simply cannot watch two teams I don't care about any longer. In fact, I can barely make it through games in which teams I do care about are playing (MSU and the Detroit Lions)....Thank goodness we have another month of baseball.

No, I'm still enjoying it. Since there are something like 200 channels on my digital cable, I can always find something else to flip to during commercials, or I open a magazine.

Now baseball...I don't like it, commericals or no. :D

The real losers are the fans in the stadiums, wondering why the game they're attending is on hold, watching the fat guy with his orange gloves, talking with a zebra-suit and seeing kiss-for-a-price on the big screens.

That was a very exciting first game to the season, if a bit mistake-filled by both teams. I never get bored with football season. I actually enjoy commercials, as it gives me a chance to get something done during the course of a game.

I admit that Free Agency has killed a lot of my recognition of certain teams. At least beyond the super stars that it. I know it helps make everybody average and that's good (an unfortunate neccessity really) but Corey Dillon should be a Cincinnati Bengal, not a hired hand of the New England Patriots.

So that part pisses me off a little, but football is still football, great catches are still great catches, bull rushes and QB squashes are still sacks, blind side bell ringers and awesome jaw-dropping hits are still momentum turning exciting hits....

And beer, pretzel's, and BBQ is still a great thing to enjoy on a cold crisp Sunday in October.

Man, if you were bored by that game last night, you're just not a football fan!

And the game finished in exactly 3 hrs - that's how long football games have taken as long as I've been watching. Are some games longer than others? Sure, but that's nothing new either.

I agree. I was at a Pittsburgh Steeler exhibition game recently and the commercials just sucked the life out of the stadium. By late in the 3rd quarter all the folks who had enjoyed the tailgates before the game were nodding off.

Impression of watching 20 minutes of the game last night...eleven guys smash into each other. Someone falls. A replay is needed for the average fan to figure out exactly what happened (did the safety get blocked? did the left guard miss his block on the defensive end? etc). Banter from the announcers as teams come up with another play to run. Another play...wait...offsides....move the ball backward another 5 yards. Another huddle. More banter. They line-up. Smash into each other. A gain of 2. Another huddle. Announcers talk about an upcoming ABC sitcom. Play is ready. they line-up. INTERCEPTION. Need a replay to find out what the hell happened. TV time-out.....

No, I think it was the fact that it was a Pittsburgh game that sucked the life out of it.

Hell, I was fairly bored by the NFL long before this season began.

It isn't the length of the games, or the number of commercials, it's just not
all that interesting to me. There simply are too few teams that I care anything about, and even those barely qualify as anything beyond passing interest.

And you do know that an exhibition game isn't the best time to get a good impression on what an NFL game is like, right? By late in the 3rd quarter, you're usually down to the 7th stringers on both offense and defense, with no other goal in the game, other than trying to impress the coach, not really win the game...

I was more interested in the Mizzou - Troy St. game last night than the Colts - Pats. But I'll get into the Bengal games.

Of course I understand. I've gone to many Steeler games since moving to Pittsburgh and I had MSU season tickets for 7 years. Maybe its a product of age ,but I am simply finding myself completely uninterested in football. I used to like all sports, but I can't watch football or basketball any longer. I now follow baseball religiously and...you'll love this...I follow the English Premier league during the winter.

I see, question of changing interests maybe, just like I have a very hard time watching more than 5 minutes of any NHL hockey anymore, which is almost seen as a sin where I'm from...

Seeing as though the peak of 'life' in a stadium during an exhibition game is less than the amount present during breaks of a real game, I'd say this is a poor example. Commercials don't suck the life out of preseason games, it is the camp fodder playing against camp fodder which does that.

The same happened me about european football (soccer), in Spain soccer is like religion, every man must love soccer, every kid at school plays soccer and talk about soccer, etc etc. I'm a Real Madrid fan since i was a kid, i have been at their stadium to enjoy lots of games, etc etc....but now i'm bored of soccer. In the other hand football is all excitement for me, i really love it, the contact, the strategies, the teamwork, damn i love it. My wife and friends don't underestand me, why do i like that bored sport that is stopped every minute? how could i know about players, teams etc if in Spain the nfl is only seen at paid satellite channels? (just had to convince again my wife to pay for the satellite channel this year again to enjoy football).

In Spain football is not followed at all, even a great team like the Barcelona Dragons had to disappear because not enought public at the field. Luckily things seems to be changing since last year and now we can at leats enjoy 3 live games per week, flag is starting to be played a lot at schools, etc and all thanks to some ex Barcelona Dragons players who want to promote football here. I only wish i could enjoy also college football so i would enjoy even more playing TCY. Well at least i have places like FOFC where i can enjoy talking about football and learning a lot from you guys :)

I enjoyed the game, I always do. I could live without the pre-game crap and skipped it. During the commercials, which were annoying, yes, I got up and went to the bathroom, or got something to eat or drink, or checked in with the wife in another part of the house, ect. ect.

American Football is a poor companion to baseball - now, that's a sport.

In WHAT universe? Yeah I love the way MLB is run, GREAT job. :rolleyes: Keeps my interest a good 5 or 10 minutes.

I think Selig is a turd muncher, but given that the NFL is more interested in forced parity, the general form of baseball is far more appealing to me. Yes, you have the Yanks (who even us die hard capitalists want to restrict), but it makes for far more styles in contrast. Most knee jerk fans love "parity" - and will never acknowledge that baseball has more parity then they like, albeit without the crapshoot nature of the NFL.

Im Indian man- I grew up with it. There's no rivalry in the world like India-Pakistan.

I heart football and am very glad the season has started. There is always FOFC to read during the commercial breaks.

I watched the India-Pakistan cricket matches at a theater here in Pittsburgh. Some students at a local college rented out the space...it was a blast. I learned a lot about the sport and truly enjoyed it.

exactly what I did last night, that and checking how my fantasy teams were doing on the various live scoring sites... Yeah, I'm an addict, please but don't cure me doc :D

Forced parity, what the salary cap? Well, if baseball doesn't do something about this they can give up being of interest to everyone except NYC and the sheep who follow THAT team. What a joke. The NFL realizes that some sort of ceiling is needed and have put one in place, not that it is perfect but sure makes more sense that have a few teams have 200, 500, 700M payrolls like some MLB owners would probably have if things go on. And as far as being a crapshoot it isn't it's just that with a much shorter season one or two games can make a much greater difference than they do in baseball. Hey to each his own each year and have less and less interest in baseball and it is doubtful that the trend will change for me anyway.

See, this is exactly what Im referring to. Baseball is plenty interesting to me now, and to plently of people around the country and around the world - calling everyone who follows it sheep is not only stupid, but ignorant. The NFL realizes that its fans want crapshoots, set up so that every year some "Cinderella' with a powder puff schedule can waltz through- no thanks. MLB payrolls are a direct reflection of what the market gives them- for what its worth, the average NFL payroll is higher than the average MLB payroll- not that it should make a wit of difference to you or I. Payroll ceilings are an artifical constraint that seems to set up a 0 zero sum game, that penalizes intelligent franchises in favor of idiotic ones. Baseball is an amazing, amazing sport, that IMO, is a far more high-brow game- and I enjoy that, and I recognize that it makes me a minority on this board. American Football is great, but my perspective is that it appeals more to the lowest common denominator - and while there is nothing wrong with that, its not something I enjoy as much.
