I just watched Godfather III
I have no idea what movie people are talking about when they say that the third one was an awful movie...I thought it was great. I'm a huge (HUGE) fan of the first two, and I am not in the least bit dissapointed in this one. They did a perfect job of setting the mood just like I & II, using very similar camera angles, and the quiet italian themed music. I have heard many people complain that Coppola's daughter did a bad job in the movie...I say "compared to what?" I thought she did a wonderful job, and the brief affair between Vincent and her was very believable. It was good to see Pacino in a more recent role that didn't have him screaming 80% of his lines as well. Great all around film, screw the critics.

I think this is the key line in what you say. Godfather labours due to the huge amount of critical acclaim that it got and even more so because the critics (ah, that word again) regularly vote G2 as being one of, if not the number one, sequel ever. It seems that a few people have a bit of an axe to grind with relationship to Ms. Coppola (hence some of the slightly negative vibes around 'Lost in Translation') but we should all have the strength to say 'I liked 'X' and don't give a damn what you say!'. Now, what other embarrasing films are you a fan of mate?! :D |
I agree, it isnt even close to the 1st two movies, but what is.....really....GF3 is a very good movie....I love the characters, the story works for me.....Pacino was great, I just wish Tom Hagen was in it(Robert Duvall).....I've always questioned why people think it sucks

GF3 is not a terrible movie (it has a great last-30min) but the storyline and acting of Andy and Sophia (very awkward kissing cousins) was fatal to this film, imo.
|
Andy overdid his role and Sophia was just plain bad. Not a bad movie, but easily the worst of the 3 films. The fact that the first 2 were so much better than the 3rd is probably a big reason people say its terrible.

2 POINTS
First, I saw an interview of Robert Duval. In wich he stated why he didn't do Godfather 3. "If you wanna pay Al Pacino twice as much as me, fine. But 10 times, forget it." Second, think how great "Return of the Jedi" really is as a movie. Its number 3 and up to par with the original... |
GF 3 was a decent movie but I would have liked it to focus more onTHE WHOLE family.

Never seen any of the Godfather movies...

Someday - and that day may never come - I'll call upon you to do a service for me. But until that day, accept this justice as gift on my daughter's wedding day.

Godfather 3 and Rocky 5 are on the same level as far as uneccessary sequels go. Don't get me wrong though, Rocky 5 is ten times worse than gf3 could ever be, but I agree with many of the others, Coppola and Garcia are what really turned me off. The ending is really phenomenal, but everything leading up to it sucked to me. Speaking of Coppola, am I the only one that doesn't see her "brilliance"? Sub-par actress, and average director/screenwriter. The Virgin Suicides was a bore of a flick, and Lost In Translation was underwhelming compared to all the hype surrounding it.

Sophia Copola need to stick to writing.

I just spent the past two nights watching GF3 and then re-watching it with Francis Coppola's commentary. Of the three films, I think his commentary on this one is by far the most interesting. He was quite open and honest about the film, as well as reflecting quite a bit on the whole trilogy. I found it fascinating to hear how everyone at the time - the studio and the fans around 1990 - wanted and expected GF3 to be a "GoodFellas"/"Wise Guy" type movie and then listening to Francis explain what he did and why (in making Michael a reluctant, tragic character).
As far as the movie, I do keep fast-forwarding through the part with Andy and Sophia together but other than that, some of my very favorite GF scenes are in GF3. Overall I think it is a very beautiful movie, truly like a Sicilian folk opera (which is why Cavalleria Rusticana is the climax - and summary - of the movie). |
