Who has it already? Mine should be here this afternoon or tomorrow. Definately will be time for a 7 hour original trilogy marathon. I wonder if hes cleared up the whole Greedo shoots first debacle yet.

No, I'm pretty sure Greedo still shoots first.

If Lucas had half a brain, he'd take the original trilogy video discs, burn them to DVD, and just sell them as-is. He could sell them on e-bay in brown paper wrappers, and he'd still make a killing.

Han blasting him under the table was always one of my favorite parts of the movie. I believe it has been changed yet again. Greedo was only trying to capture Solo, i believe, so him shooting didnt make any sense.

Also, doesn't it take a lot away from the meaning of Han's line when he says "Yeah, I bet you have." And then blasts him away?

aye- Im keeping the VHS' for that reason. Hell, Ill just burn my own to DVD to preserve them- even if the quality is shiite.

Greedo shoots first. Luke no longer screams when falling in Ep. 5. And rumor has it that Hayden Christenson shows up at the end of Jedi.

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- George Lucas made several changes in "Star Wars" when the film was re-released in 1997. With the "Star Wars" trilogy on DVD, he's tinkered a little more. Here are five changes Lucas made:

5. Jedis don't scream

The 1997 special edition version of "The Empire Strikes Back" was changed so Luke wails as he jumps off the platform in Cloud City. In the only instance of Lucas undoing a later alteration (sadly, Greedo still shoots first on the DVD of "A New Hope"), he's taken it off the DVD edition. Maybe he realized Jedis (even ones in training) don't scream.

4. Boba Fett has a new voice

Since Boba Fett is a clone of Jango Fett, and Jango Fett is played by Temura Morrison, doesn't it make sense that he should sound like him, too? That's exactly what George Lucas thought, so Morrison was brought in to revoice the four lines of dialogue (yes, believe it or not there are only four!) Boba spoke in the original trilogy.

3. A new and improved Jabba

Remember that dodgy-looking computer-generated Jabba they inserted into the 1997 re-release of "A New Hope"? Well, he looks a little less dodgy this time around thanks to some improved CGI.

2. The emperor's new clothes

In the original version of "The Empire Strikes Back," the emperor Darth Vader speaks to via hologram was played by a woman in a mask (!) and voiced by Clive Revill. Again, in the interests of consistency, Ian McDiarmid -- who portrays the emperor in "Return of the Jedi" and the prequel trilogy -- now appears in that scene with an added line or two of dialogue.

1. The big finale

The 1997 special edition of "Return of the Jedi" added a few "Star Wars" worlds joining the celebration of the Empire's demise at the end of the film. For the DVD, they've added Naboo, a planet that figures prominently in the prequel trilogy. Also, Anakin Skywalker is noticeably different this time around. When he removes his Darth Vader helmet, he now has no eyebrows! It's probably safe to assume he singes them off in his battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi in next summer's "Revenge of the Sith" and a change had to be made.

But the most noticeable change -- and perhaps one some "Star Wars" diehards will have a tough time stomaching -- is Hayden Christensen (who plays young Anakin in the prequel trilogy) now appearing in the scene where the "force ghosts" of Anakin, Obi Wan, and Yoda smile at Luke. One thing's for sure, there's plenty for fans to debate -- that is, until the trilogy comes out yet again on another format in the future and Mr. Lucas makes his inevitable changes ...

I'm not really much of a fan of Star Wars, but I did read the recent interview up on CNN.com, and here's what he said about why he changed the movies and won't sell the old ones:

Q: Why not release both the originals and special editions on DVD?

LUCAS: The special edition, that's the one I wanted out there. The other movie, it's on VHS, if anybody wants it. ...

I'm not going to spend the, we're talking millions of dollars here, the money and the time to refurbish that, because to me, it doesn't really exist anymore. It's like this is the movie I wanted it to be, and I'm sorry you saw half a completed film and fell in love with it. But I want it to be the way I want it to be.

Lucas has often said he was unhappy with the original trilogy as it was released.

I'm the one who has to take responsibility for it. I'm the one who has to have everybody throw rocks at me all the time, so at least if they're going to throw rocks at me, they're going to throw rocks at me for something I love rather than something I think is not very good, or at least something I think is not finished.

LUCAS: To me, the special edition ones are the films I wanted to make. Anybody that makes films knows the film is never finished. It's abandoned or it's ripped out of your hands, and it's thrown into the marketplace, never finished. It's a very rare experience where you find a filmmaker who says, "That's exactly what I wanted. I got everything I needed. I made it just perfect. I'm going to put it out there." And even most artists, most painters, even composers would want to come back and redo their work now. They've got a new perspective on it, they've got more resources, they have better technology, and they can fix or finish the things that were never done. ...

I wanted to actually finish the film the way it was meant to be when I was originally doing it. At the beginning, people went, "Don't you like it?" I said, "Well, the film only came out to be 25 or 30 percent of what I wanted it to be." They said, "What are you talking about?" So finally, I stopped saying that, but if you read any interviews for about an eight- or nine-year period there, it was all about how disappointed I was and how unhappy I was and what a dismal experience it was. You know, it's too bad you need to get kind of half a job done and never get to finish it. So this was my chance to finish it.

I have the original video releases (well, I lost Jedi actually... but who cares), and I'm sticking to those. I can't stand that he keeps fucking with the movies decades after the fact.

I've of the opinion that once you release it, it is what it is. It is not what you 'wanted it to be if you had the money, time, support, etc.'

actually, the Greedo / Han thing is supposed to be a tie, now.
as I said in another thread, my wife is picking them up today - the projector is ready to go. we are having people over on Saturday to watch Episode IV.

the documentary, by the way, is amazing - I saw the A&E broadcast of it (or an edited version of it) and it was incredible.

As much as I tried to tell myself I'd wait for the "collector's edition (no really this time)" set of all 6, I broke down and pre-ordered it from Amazon, should be here today.

New emperor scene appears, at least, to be a major improvement. I thought that they were inserted a bunch more stuff into these movies, such as scenes on alderran and extra stuff. Maybe thats being saved for the six disc "elite version" that undoubtedly comes out in like 5 years. I'm tired of rebuying these films.

I'm waiting for the supercalifragilisticexpialidcious edition, complete with Juli Andrews commentary. Now THAT is worth 40 bucks. :rolleyes:

Woohoo! Got mine from Fry's Electronics for just $36.99. I tried to used a Jedi mind trick by sweeping my hand across the counter and telling the cashier that the DVD would only cost me a dollar. I still need pracice.

Best Buy had it for $42.

I feel cheap and used for having bought it, but I'm comforting myself with the excuse that it's "for the kids."

You know, i kindof like the clean up of the emperor pic. Christensen looks retarded. Then again, I'm not losing any sleep over it just like I never went ballistic over Greedo shooting first or even noticed it until someone pointed it out.

Wooooo! Star Wars on DVD! I really, really, really enjoy watching the movies on a DVD transfer rather than the much more grainy version that comes up on basic cable from time to time.

And about all the changes, if they really bother you THAT much (and if they do, I think you sad... there I said it :p) then don't buy it! Like Lucas said, the VHS ones are out there. No one is forcing you to buy them. It's Lucas' creation and he can do whatever he damned well pleases with them. If you hate what he's done then don't buy it. Is that so hard to accept?

Frankly I don't mind most of his changes and think some of them (the new emperor stuff, the removing of the eyebrows from good dying Vader at the end) are better. I'm happy to spend my money to get this.

the Boba Fett voice thing pisses me off tremendously, but yeah, I consider this to be $47 well spent.

I will not be buying this set, specifically because of my issues with the changes. I'll stick with my remastered original versions on VHS.

btw, one more perspective on the Greedo thing:

In the latest Entertainment Weekly interview, Lucas says that it was originally his intention to have Greedo shoot first in that scene, but when they went to edit it, they didn't have the right shots, and so that's how the scene ended up.

given the rough, rough state Star Wars was in after principle shooting was over, I think this is certainly plausible, but, personally, I think he's full of poodoo

I think the Boba Fett voice change is good and makes a lot of sense. I wonder how many things Lucas was able to put into the originals but would make the moveis better if they had taken it out...

But the ending to Jedi makes no sense. Both Yoda and Obi-Wan appear as they do when they died. Shouldn't Anikin still look like the guy in the Vader suit?

I think so too, because he's clearly made stuff up after the fact and then claimed 'that was how I always intended it.' For example, pretty much all of Episode 1. I believe he had an incredibly rough back story written, but he clearly had to create most of it when it was time to actually write episodes 1-3.
