OT: Funny Nike, Michael Vick commercial

I am sure most of you have seen this commercial. I have seen it about 5 times this Sunday and my wife and I laughed every time it was on. The kid's screaming is funny stuff.

davidlando1 09-26-2004 11:48 PM

Agreed, a really good commercial. :) The kid screaming is really funny.

MizzouRah 09-26-2004 11:59 PM

I laughed my arse off today when that commercial came on. Very funny!

Made me want to go play some football! (But my back, wrist, and knees talked me out of it.

stevew 09-27-2004 01:36 AM

I think the shoes are pretty sweet looking, but i dont really have much use for turf type shoes in my life.

korme 09-27-2004 01:37 AM

i love how he's moving his feet and trying to speed up even though the seat is carrying him

kingfc22 09-27-2004 02:33 AM

One of the funnier commercials that I've seen lately. I especially like the part where he does the 360 spin.

Raiders Army 09-27-2004 05:27 AM

The kicker for me is at the end, where it shows the picture of him screaming ala many rollercoaster rides.

wade moore 09-27-2004 05:47 AM

Did anyone else watch this and think...

"I would pay a ton of money to ride this..."

?

Taco 09-27-2004 06:02 AM

You can watch the commercial from the Nike site!

Yes. My wife said it would be a brilliant ride.

As for the shoes...unless they have some kind of super-robotic ability, I'm not paying $120 dollars for a pair of sneakers. Never have, never will.

That's exactly what I told one of my friends after seeing the commercial for the first time. Looks so fun. :D

I hope you wouldn't pay more than $120 for such a ride, since this and all other shoe commercials prove that once you have the shoes, you'll be just as good as the super-athlete pimping them. Although I've never bought a pair of athletic shoes for more than $50, I aassume that once you buy an expensive pair like these, you can make your own commercial.

rkmsuf 09-27-2004 09:03 AM

I liked it the first couple times but I think I've already had it with that spot. I can envision 537 more views for me and that's making me ill.

Most definately not...

I'm with you on $50 at most for athletic shoes... once you get above that you are not paying for quality, but name and looks.... you can get a good, solid quality and aestheticly pleasing shoe for $50.. no reason to spend more...

ISiddiqui 09-27-2004 09:15 AM

MissouRah:

Well watch a football game from now until the end of the year... I'm sure you'll be able to see it ;).

I could probably spend less than $50, but I need wide shoes, and they are difficult to find. I think I got my New Balance for $50.

QuikSand 09-27-2004 09:23 AM

Great commercial. But it makes me wonder if Vick has a bit of a ceiling in terms of marketability. He seems to be utterly devoid of any charisma -- and despite his exciting on-field play, that's a pretty important element of marketing a sports figure. Just curious.

rkmsuf 09-27-2004 09:24 AM

He's great as a hologram. This much we know.

Ksyrup 09-27-2004 09:40 AM

His speaking voice is no worse than Shaq's, and Shaq is plenty marketable. Shaq's monotone delivery makes Kevin Costner sound like a great actor.

I agree that Shaq doesn't have much inflection -- but he does have charisma and presence. I think it's more than just "acting skills" involved. Part of it is probably Shaq's size -- but his smile helps, too. So far, I see none of that in Vick (in the limited appearances I have seen from him).

From his scouting notes before the 2K1 draft:

Quote:

Michael Vick
By: Dave-Te' Thomas

#7-MICHAEL VICK Virginia Tech Institute Hokies 6:00.7-214

ANALYSIS
Positives... Versatile scrambler who is very tough to defend...Shows quick feet and excellent balance, smoothly dropping back from center in his set-up...Has a snappy overhead delivery and a good feel for reading defenses...Knows how to lay the ball away from defenders on his deep tosses and shows good touch on his post patterns... Confident on the field, proving that improvising is one of his stronger suits...Well-respected by his teammates as he rarely loses his cool...Puts impressive zip behind his short tosses, threading the needle on his slants...Leads his receivers well into the pass on his long outs...Eludes the rush with fluid agility and steps up in the pocket to absorb punishment rather than making a costly throw into coverage...Excels at getting outside the pocket and throwing on the run...His ability to run with the ball causes opponents to defend the entire field...Anticipates coverages, throwing to receivers away from defenders.

Negatives... Tries to carry the "weight of the world" on his shoulders too much...Seems very uncomfortable being in the limelight...Still needs to mature as a player...Sometimes gets too confident in his running skills, forgetting to eye his secondary receivers in order to run with the ball when his primary target is not available...Tends to get into a three-quarter throwing motion as the game wears on, taking a little zip off his tosses... Has a little bit of a wind-up in his release when throwing long, which makes his receivers work a little harder in order to get to the ball...Has good arm strength, but needs to refine his throwing mechanics, as he is not that quick to load and reload in his delivery.

CAREER NOTES
Considered by many to be the most exciting player in college football... Gutsy performer who plays with injuries that would sideline most...Despite playing only two seasons with the Hokies, he is only the second quarterback in school history to rush for over 1000 yards in a career (1202)... Ranks seventh on Virginia Tech's all-time passing list with 3074 yards and sixth with 4276 yards in total offense...Including post-season action, the he compiled a 20-2 record in the games he's played in at Tech (20-1 as a starter).

REMINDS ME OF... Philadelphia's Donovan McNabb. GAZING INTO THE CRYSTAL BALL... While San Diego continues to show strong interest in Vick as their overall top pick, some within the organization are openly questioning his ability to read defenses. After dropping $25 million into Doug Flutie's lap, that is a tremendous amount to pay a guy to tutor the youngster. If the Chargers do not trade this pick, they reluctantly take Vick, but I still feel that either Atlanta or Kansas City will make a big push to trade up before draft day.

From everything I've heard and read about him, I get the impression that he's rather introverted.

Certainly understandable. I wasn't trying to be critical -- just making an observation.

By the way - I don't think I have ever seen Va Tech called the "Virginia Tech Institute" before. VPI, sure, but never...uh... VTI.

I sure didn't think you were being critical. If the guy is introverted, he's introverted. Being an extrovert married to an introvert, I've become more and more convinced that being introverted/extroverted is a case of hard wiring.

If you have one, you could find a Nike outlet and buy 3 pairs of shoes for about $90 and all of them are very good quality.

As Vick becomes more mature he will get better in front of the camera. I have noticed other players who came across like a piece of wood in interviews early in their career, but became more comfortable later

Vick is also doing an Airtran commerical on the radio. His monotone is *brutal*--borderline embarrassing.
