Why do people log out???

In light of the problems we're having, it clearly isn't a good idea to log out of the board now, but I'm wondering why anyone *ever* logs out. I just close my browser, and the next time I open it and clck on the FOFC link, I'm logged in automatically. What's the point of logging out and having to re-enter a password? Am I missing something here?

rkmsuf 11-04-2004 01:32 PM

logging out is for suckers.

Bomber 11-04-2004 01:34 PM

Maybe they share the computer with multiple untrustworthy people.

Masked 11-04-2004 01:34 PM

Perhaps they are using a shared computer

Sometimes I delete cookies to get rid of all the porn I have on my computer, I don't like my computer having so much filth in it for some reason, maybe its just a pet peeve of mine.

Huckleberry 11-04-2004 01:36 PM

I just realized it could be because they are using a shared computer.

HornedFrog Purple 11-04-2004 01:39 PM

well I do have 84 other aliases you know...

FrogMan 11-04-2004 01:40 PM

didn't you post something about the database being hacked and it being a good idea to change our passwords?

FM

Ben E Lou 11-04-2004 01:41 PM

Shared computer....

With a roommate or something? I'm still not fully getting it. I share my home desktop computer with my wife, and I used to log in to The Sideline on a computer I shared with a roomie. It still never would have even occurred to me to log out.

Someone mentioned "multiple untrustworthy people." The only situation I can think of that would cause that would be a college suite. (I'm assuming that no one on here would share a home/computer with multiple untrustworthy people willingly...) Is the fear that a roomie will check the history, go to the board, and start posting trollish stuff or something?

Franklinnoble 11-04-2004 01:42 PM

It's likely the cookie-cleaners that are logging out.

Yes....but I mean people who have gotten logged in within the last day have logged back out....and gotten locked out. Plus, the password thing doesn't explain my bigger question, which is in general what are the benefits of logging out (if any)?

Why clean them again, if they cleaned them and then got back in?

Bomber 11-04-2004 01:46 PM

Maybe the embarrassment of using an internet message board is too great for them to handle.

MikeVic 11-04-2004 01:48 PM

I usually log out of everything. FOFC is the only exception. And at work, I seem to be logged out randomly.

I think logging out gives a sense of security.

rkmsuf 11-04-2004 01:48 PM

The logger outers are probably the same people who have never just turned the computer off but always do Start/Shutdown and wait however long it takes.

Ben E Lou 11-04-2004 01:49 PM

I didn't mean for this thread to turn into picking on anyone, and I hope my tone hasn't been that way. I'm just genuinely curious about this.

Or a college computer lab.

Considering I have to hold in the power button for 2 seconds to turn it off, and Start-Shutdown takes 5 seconds... I prefer to use Start-Shutdown. :)

What are the risks? (I ask because I'm looking at no less than seven different message boards on my links list, none of which I've logged out from. :p)

That would account, I would think, for a very small percentage of people here.

I don't believe there are any risks but judging by the thread others think there are. I have no idea.

I would imagine people like Jim who prefer to be hidden have to log out and log back in.

Could that be it?

well in that same thread someone said (I'm pharaphrasing) "I'm logged in should I log out and try again to see if it works" and you replied with a yes sure or something to that effect....and then no further response from anyone if it worked or not so mabey others were trying to see if it did work or not. Just my guess.

Buzzbee 11-04-2004 04:21 PM

I'm sure this is rare, and doesn't explain numerous people logging out, but trying to solve the enigma puzzles requires you to log out and log back in as enigma, with the password being the answer to the puzzle.

Just another possible reason.

Holding the power button to shut my computer off would require me to bend down, so that's out of the question. I just log off normally.

I'd use a different browser when logging in as the enigma.

I mean, theoretically, of course. ;)

No.

He will browse the board using invisible mode which allows him to stay logged in.

Draft Dodger 11-04-2004 05:22 PM

people who post as lame aliases need to log out to do so.

EagleFan 11-04-2004 10:04 PM

You have to log out because Major League Baseball is watching and attemtping to read your minds.

Excuse me while I go get my tin-foil hat... ;)

There IS a hazard of data corruption in the event that there's anything buffered but not written to the hard drive if you cut power. However, such problems are much more serious in other file systems (e.g. linux ext2, which can be left in really bad shape if you cut power without running shutdown).

Now that I'm logged in, I'm leaving the browser open and my computer on all night.

Ditto, although I will probably be screwed, and locked out again tomorrow morning.

Something I am wondering, since I can log in early in the AM hours could there be some constraint on the number of log ins? This whole thing just doesn't make too much sense to me.

There is a reason for this, but I don't want to make it public right now until I know for sure. Once everything is fixed I will explain all.

I normally stay logged in at home, but I changed my password immediately after the board came back up and I haven't been able to get back in since. In the school library - where I am now - I always log out.

tucker rocky 11-05-2004 07:28 AM

This is justing an interesting tidbit, but before the "crash" of FOFC, I'd never log out, always had the "remember me" box checked, for when I came back to the board.
Then, strange things started happening, I'd have to log in every time I visited, even with the box checked.
