Wireless Connection thru Internet Explorer

Ok here is the situation...

For the past 2 weeks I've been here on LSU Campus. My labtop was working perfectly fine and the wireless connection couldn't be better. Well, suddenly today, my internet explorer stops working. Or should I say, I can no longer connect to the internet. I don't know what went wrong. I've been sitting here stumped for the past 2 hours.. here's what I've tried so far...

- Moving locations to get a stronger signal or faster speed... still doesn't work
- Adjusted the settings of my IE browser and lowered the privacy settings and all that to the lowest to accept ALL cookies... Didn't work..

Can someone please help. If you need more info on my settings just let me know. I hope one of you guys can figure it out. I need my Wireless Internet Access!!

Mine did that from time to time when I moved. I called the Cable Service. They told me to unplug everything, even the wires, and turn off the laptop. Wait a few minutes, and replug everything. I think the IP address needs to be pinged, so that the wireless recognizes it. The tech help told me to do something on the Start---->Run command prompt. I forgot what it was, maybe another person can help you out on that. Hope that helps.

EDIT: Also, you may want to get a firewall and D/L some virus protection prog's when you get back on like Ad-aware or Spybot.

well ya see. I know my labtop can get on the internet. the signal is fine. everything works. the problem i am having is Internet Explorer. usually, upon opening IE, I am instantly redirected to the LSU Secure login page. There, I type in my Username and what not to verify that I am a student of LSU and I am using their wireless connection. Now for some reason, either my settings or something I fooled with is effecting this. I can't even get to the Log in screen anymore.

gottimd 11-18-2004 10:54 AM

You mean your home page? Right Click on your IE icon, and go to properties, and on the General Tab, type in the home address you want it go to. Check your connections tab as well.

gottimd 11-18-2004 10:55 AM

Dola-

Maybe something is up with the LSU connection. So you can surf normally without logging into the LSU servers?

sony 11-18-2004 10:55 AM

Nah, it's not that. I've messed with it,

In order for me to get access to the internet, I have to log in to the LSU Wireless system. I can't even get to it anymore.

gottimd 11-18-2004 10:57 AM

Did you try calling the LSU IT Help Desk Support? Has to be a connection setting with them that got muffed up.

Router Help 11-18-2004 10:58 AM

Start>Run>CMD Then type ipconfig if your IP starts with 169., then your wireless isn't getting an IP from the network

If this is the case, type ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew

I'm gonna try it now. Thank you guys for the much needed help! Thumbs up to you guys definitely. I'll respond in a minute here.

sony 11-18-2004 11:12 AM

Ok, like I mentioned before. I am having no problem accessing LSU's wireless system.

Here are the numbers I get when I type in Ip Config

Ehternet Adapter Wireless Network Connection:

Connection-Specific DNS Suffix . : wlan.lsu.edu
IP Address............................. : 10.1.20......
Subnet Mask .............................255.......
Default Gateway 10.1.0.01

I'm thinking it's my Internet Explorer browser. Something with my settings that isn't allowing me to access the LSU Secure smart site. What are your recommendations on how I should put my settings?

Router Help 11-18-2004 11:29 AM

According to LSU's website they don't have any encryption or other security settings on the network.

At that DOS prompt, do you get a response if you ping www.google.com?

Router Help 11-18-2004 11:33 AM

It's also possible the cookie in your cache was corrupted.

In IE go to Tools>Internet Options, delete cookies and delete files

sony 11-18-2004 11:37 AM

Sure, I deleted the cookies and the files. Still not working

I'm not sure on how to ping www.google.com thru the DOS. Sorry, could you elaborate?

DanGarion 11-18-2004 11:39 AM

Yeah try to ping out.

If you can't ping www.google.com try 216.239.57.147 that's one of their server IP addresses. If that works but google.com doesn't then maybe their DNS servers are having issues or your computer somehow (I've seen it happen on XP) has messed up it's DNS server settings.

Let us know.

You can also try doing a traceroute to 216.239.57.147 and copy and paste it into here maybe they are having a network issue.

Router Help 11-18-2004 11:39 AM

Start>RUN>CMD

ping www.google.com

if the request times out or it says unknow host or destination unreachable try this:

ping 64.233.167.99

DanGarion 11-18-2004 11:40 AM

To ping you go to the command prompt and type

ping www.google.com

to trace route you do
tracert www.google.com

I'm modest, I think the thanks should go to Router, Dacman, and Dangarion, they offered better advice, but thanks, glad to be of some help!

Router Help 11-18-2004 11:46 AM

Actually I think it fixed itself. Pinging out shouldn't fix anything. :D
