Suggestion in Light of FOF5.1
Seeing as though Jim has provided, for free, updates of FOF and TCY this year, and considering that we're coming up on the holiday gift-giving season, I have a suggestion for those of us who are financially able to do so:
Buy FOF5.1 for someone! I have a good friend who works in sports and, although we don't regularly exchange gifts, this game would be perfect for him. I've pimped FOF, OOTP, etc., to him, but he's never made an effort to try the games out. So, this looks like a great chance to give him that opportunity. As I see it, this accomplishes three things - takes care of someone on your shopping list, spreads the word about Jim's games (and text sims in general), and gives Jim a nice "thanks!" for the free updates. I'm trying to remember how the purchase works - will it be problematic to buy the game for someone, or will I just have to send him the registration info? Will it raise issues if the registration info has my name on it (if he ever needs to get assistance with the registration key), or is there a way to put it in someone else's name? Just wondering. Maybe Jim can answer that. Anyway, just a suggestion for those of us giddy about getting such a massive (and free) update to an already-solid game. |
I really like this idea. I hope it's feasible (with the registration codes and such).

Yup -- right here: Quote:
Seriously, welcome to the forum. Have a nice, long look through the links at the "reference" page stickied at the top of this forum. There's a lot of good background stuff in there. But generally speaking -- don't count on other people to walk you through this game, go play it and find things out for yourself... your early experiences will be much more rewarding that way. Now, go get me some donuts, rook! |
I seem to remember Jim saying once before that individuals can't purchase multiple copies, so in other words you can't buy a copy for someone else.
Hopefully my memory is wrong, though. I would love to buy a copy for my brother... |

He is just kidding. Supercomputers don't eat donuts. I, on the other hand, will take a dozen. |

I have purchased several copies of TCY so I don;t see why you couldn't. |
My comments above were just me thinking out loud, but as I recall, one part of the registration is your last name, so if I purchased this for someone and a year from now they call up because they've lost the registration, or need to get a license back, what is going to happen? Also, the email address attached to the purchase would be the purchasers, not the "end user." Just wondering how this would work and if it would cause problems down the road for the person receiving the game.

If you use the "giftee's" email address and last name, then there shouldn't be a problem, should it? Been over a year since I got FOF2k4 so I don't remember all the specifics. Simply tell the person that you are giving them the game and that they will recieve an email with instructions. Might spoil the "unwrapping" a little bit, but will get the job done. |
FOF2K4 registration is not tied to last name or e-mail addy, I'm almost certain. It is just a Viatech Order ID #. I'm looking at my e-mail for TPB2005 right now. It has the order ID #, and doesn't have my credit card number. All you'd need to do would be buy the game, and give the printout to the giftee. You could print out the e-mail, write the download link for the game on it, fold it, put it in a small box, and wrap the box if you want them to unwrap the gift.

EDIT: Didn't notice this... Quote:

I suppose I have to stay good friends with Alf the rest of the time, in case I will ever need to reset the license.
