Radio host
calls Rice
‘Aunt Jemima’
Powell called ‘Uncle Tom’
The Associated Press
Updated: 1:29 p.m. ET Nov. 19, 2004MILWAUKEE - A radio talk show host drew criticism Thursday after calling Condoleezza Rice an “Aunt Jemima” and saying she isn’t competent to be secretary of state.

John Sylvester, the program director and morning personality on WTDY-AM in Madison, said in a phone interview Thursday that he used the term on Wednesday’s show to describe Rice and other blacks as having only a subservient role in the Bush administration.

Rice has served as President Bush’s national security adviser and was named this week to replace the departing Colin Powell as secretary of state.

Sylvester, who is white, also referred to Powell as an “Uncle Tom” — a contemptuous term for a black whose behavior toward whites is regarded as fawning or servile.

He said Thursday night that he was referring to remarks by singer and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte that the price of admittance for blacks to the Bush White House was subservience.
As for Rice, “they’re using her for an illusion of inclusion,” he said, adding that he feels her history as national security adviser showed a lack of competence.

‘Racially insensitive’
Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz called the remarks “racially insensitive,” while Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., said in a statement he joined “all Wisconsinites in rejecting” the statements.
Linda Hoskins of the NAACP’s Madison branch said she could not comment on Sylvester’s remarks until she had heard them in their entirety.

The station’s corporate office received about 100 calls about his comments, Sylvester said.
He added that he has a long history of commitment to civil rights and has supported Madison’s black community.

He said he was planning a giveaway on Friday’s show of Aunt Jemima pancake mix and syrup. “I will apologize to Aunt Jemima,” he said.

The incident came after a radio host in Milwaukee had his talk show taken off the air all of last week after he used the word “wetback” to refer to undocumented Mexican immigrants, sparking protests from Hispanics.

Geez, why doesn't he just use the 'N' word and get it over for himself?

Y'know, some folks are just made for radio careers.
Clearly, Porky Pig should avoid TV cameras.

the picture combined with his comedic timing makes me wonder what the hoopla is all about.

And just in case anybody read the MSNBC article & wondered "why in the world did Sen Feingold feel he needed to distance himself from the remarks of some talk show host" ... apparently the two are old buddies

"Late Tuesday night, John Sylvester, host of the "Sly in the Morning" radio show on WTDY/AM 1670, welcomed the newly re-elected senator to a room of about 300 supporters at the hotel where Feingold held both of his previous victory parties."

Pretty good gig considering this guy is apparently the morning host of the 3rd-rated new/talk station in the 96th ranked market in the country.

Will somebody please explain to me how this exactly qualifies as "national news" to be covered?

As a Madison-area resident, I was also wondering why this got national attention. I don't listen to his AM show (or any talk radio for that matter), but he's also a DJ for the sister FM station I usually listen to. Luckily, he just talks about music and leaves the crap for AM.

The only thing I can figure here is that this being the second, umm, "questionable comment" incident in Wisconsin in a week maybe pushed this story up the ladder a bit?

Mark Belling is probably the reason I don't listen to talk radio. I grew up in the Milwaukee area, and my parents usually had AM talk radio on in the car. The people on most stations were OK, but Belling was just horrible (and I'm a conservative). Thankfully he didn't start in Milwaukee until my mid-teens, so I didn't have to wait for too long before I could drive and pick my own stations.

By the way, before Belling moved to Milwaukee, he was at WTDY in Madison ... where "Sly" is now.

So let's see, since Bush is the President, doesn't that pretty much mean everyone who works for him is subservient? Is Rumsfled an Aunt Jemima then? This is Assinine with a capital A. I suppose the only way to satisfy this meathead is if Bush were a puppet and Rice the puppetmaster (although that has a certain appeal of its own).
