QB value comparisions
 

I just ran across these numbers from two QB's who both played during the 90's. I was surprised to see just how close these two were by the numbers.

Player A: 165 games, 2,898 of 4,715(61.5%) for 32,942 yards(6.99 YPA), 165 TDs and 141 INTs(1.17 TD/INT ratio), QB rating of 81.6

Player B: 133 games, 2,298 of 3,967(57.9%) for 27,602 yards(6.96 YPA), 154 TDs and 113 INTs(1.36 TD/INT ratio), QB rating of 80.4

Both QB's led a team to at least the conference semifinals. One of these QB's is a shoe in for the Hall of Fame. One of these QB's had his career shortened due to injuries. Both were classic pocket passers. Both are in the top 50 all time in several catagories including yardage. Feel free to guess at who these two QB's are but what I am really interested in how people think these two match up in their era and all time.

Troy Aikman baby!

Classic example of how your teammates determine your legacy in the sport of football.

QB's of Super Bowl winners, especially multiple Super Bowl wins tend to be rated much higher than other QB's, especially QB's with perceived attitude problems.

I'm struck by how mediocre A's numbers are given all his hype and the talent surrounding him. I worked with a guy that worshipped him and thinks he's the most accurate passer ever. From a physical standpoint, he may be correct, but obviously his results, statistically speaking, don't quite match the hype.

Player B always had the physical tools, and was often very effective. He just wasn't considered much of a leader, and the injuries were obviously a major factor as well.

I'll leave their names and teams out of this post so others can guess who they are.

Aikman and Jeff George

Jeff George and Troy Aikman. Aikman didn't yell at his coach on the sideline and therefore should be in the Hall of Fame.

I thought Jeff George was still "available."

What team did Jeff George lead to a conference championship? One is Troy Aikman, the other I do not know...

Because team accomlishments are important in individual recognition?

Nooo.... The original post said both led their teams to the conference finals. Which Jeff George led team made it to the conference finals?

And, for the record, the Cowboys passing game was not set up for big plays and huge passing numbers.

The Vikings.

No. The Jeff George led Vikings lost to the Rams in the divisional playoffs, not conference finals. The only other time he made it to the playoffs as a starter was 1995 when the Falcons lost to Green Bay in the wildcard round.

A Denny Green led team!

If I remember correctly, they made it the year before with Cunningham and the year afterward with Culpepper...but not in George's year there.

You are correct. In 2000 George wasn't even on the Vikings. He left for Washington and Bubby Brister was the backup to Culpepper.

Well, I don't know what other team he would have gone to the title game with... unless it was the Raiders?

1997 Oakland Raiders: Record: 4 - 12
1998 Oakland Raiders: Record: 8 - 8 (Couldn't really even be considered a George led team, started the first 4 games and didn't have a game he threw 20 or more passes the rest of the season)

George was only on a winning team 3 times in his career, the 9-7 1992 Colts, 9-7 1995 Atlanta Falcons, and the 10-6 1999 Minnesota Vikings. The only one of these teams that George started all 16 games for was the Falcons, in '92 he played 10 games, in 1999 he played in 14 (counting playoffs, and a game where he threw only 1 pass). Only 2 of these teams made the playoffs, neither team getting a bye, the Falcons in '95 and the Vikings in '99. The wildcard game with the Vikings was the only playoff game he won.

Yeah, though one of the things not mentioned is that one of these QBs was able to hold down a starting job.

One of those QB's actually was lucky enough to be drafted by and play for a decent franchise his entire career.

As much as I think Jeff George is a headcase, Indianapolis was pathetic while he was there, and it didn't get much better for him in Atlanta. By the time he got to Minnesota, he was already damaged goods, but even then, he managed a halfway decent run before he moved on to Washington.

Ironic that the Redskins ended the careers of both QB's, when you think about it...

Aikman was done way before Arrington got his shot on him, Franky...

Bah. Don't deprive me of the ONE good thing to happen on our side of the Redskins-Cowboys rivalry in the last ten years.

Hey man, that's about all we Cowboys fans can do this year...

Remember, John Elway was the second coming of Fran Tarkenton (a great quarterback with the loser label) until the running game kicked in to high gear and won him a couple of Super Bowls while he just handed the ball off.

The big difference between Aikman and George was leadership. Aikman had it, George couldn't spell it. Jeff George was probably one of the most talented drop back passers of his time, but he couldn't lead a team. Aikman's stats suck because his first and last couple of seasons he had very little talent around him. Also, he didn't get to throw many touchdown passes from within the red zone (see Emmitt Smith).
