My Very First Thread!!!

I just think it's so great that so many people aren't being influenced by CBS or ABC or NBC or The New York Times or the Washington Post of the the LA Times or the Boston Globe or the Encyclopaedia Britannica!!!

Most Americans believe the Virgin Birth is literally true, a Newsweek poll finds

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6650997/site/newsweek/

Dec. 5 - Seventy-nine percent of Americans believe that, as the Bible says, Jesus Christ was born of the Virgin Mary, without a human father, according to a new NEWSWEEK poll on beliefs about Jesus.

Sixty-seven percent say they believe that the entire story of Christmas the Virgin Birth, the angelic proclamation to the shepherds, the Star of Bethlehem and the Wise Men from the East—is historically accurate. Twenty-four percent of Americans believe the story of Christmas is a theological invention written to affirm faith in Jesus Christ, the poll shows. In general, say 55 percent of those polled, every word of the Bible is literally accurate. Thirty-eight percent do not believe that about the Bible.

In the NEWSWEEK poll, 93 percent of Americans say they believe Jesus Christ actually lived and 82 percent believe Jesus Christ was God or the Son of God. Fifty-two percent of all those polled believe, as the Bible proclaims, that Jesus will return to earth someday; 21 percent do not believe it. Fifteen percent believe Jesus will return in their lifetime; 47 percent do not, the poll shows.

When asked if there would be more or less kindness in the world today if there had never been a Jesus, 61 percent of all those polled say there would be less kindness. Forty-seven percent say there would be more war if there had never been a Jesus (16 percent say less, 26 percent say the same); 63 percent say there would be less charity; 58 percent say there would be less tolerance; 59 percent say there would be less personal happiness and 38 percent say there would be less religious divisions (21 percent say more and 26 percent say the same).

Most Americans believe the Virgin Birth is literally true, a Newsweek poll finds

Just 11 percent of those surveyed say American society as a whole very closely reflects true Christian values and the spirit of Jesus; 53 percent say it somewhat reflects those values. But 86 percent say they believe organized religion has a “a lot” or “some” influence over life in the United States today. Nine percent say it has “only a little” influence.

Sixty-two percent say they favor teaching creation science in addition to evolution in public schools; 26 percent oppose such teaching, the poll shows. Forty-three percent favor teaching creation science instead of evolution in public schools; 40 percent oppose the idea.

The only problem with this poll that I have is the last paragraph. Sadly, most of the public is not educated enough about the natural sciences-its not just religious convictions that factor into the belief that creationism not "creation science" because it isn't science, is a better idea.

Also, the reason that people believe in creationism and some of the other things about the bible etc. is because they don't watch NBC or read the Times or whatever, its because the majority of Americans go to church a younger age then they go to school and first learn and are influenced first by religion rather than science and history. Also, a lot of Americans don't go to college and some don't go to high school and they lack the understanding about the Bible in a historical context and they lack knowledge of evolution and the science and facts behind it.

79% of Americans believe in the Virgin Birth? Is even 79% of the country Christian?

I remember a few years back that over 80% in an ABC poll proclaimed themselves as Christians.

Do you think LTB frequents Dairy Queen?

Bomber 12-07-2004 09:16 AM

I was watching MSNBC last night at like 3:30 and they were saying that 80% of Americans were Christians and that this was a Christian nation. Does anyone know if this is true? Also the panelists, except for some random dumbass whose title was "American Atheist", seemed to think it was a huge deal that Macy's is adding Happy Holidays and Season's Greetings to their signs, in addition to Merry Christmas, in an effort to be more inclusive.

GoldenEagle 12-07-2004 10:36 AM

I do not see anything in his posts that would deem being banned or being a troll. Unless this was a duplicate account, this ban was not justified.

WSUCougar 12-07-2004 10:39 AM

79% of FOFC members will never know you were here.

Crapshoot 12-07-2004 10:48 AM

This seems overboard Ben- he was controversial perhaps, but a troll ? Cmon

albionmoonlight 12-07-2004 10:51 AM

To paraphrase Frederick Buechner:

If you don't beleive that Jesus was God, then it should not matter to you whether his mother was a virgin.

If you do believe that Jesus was God, then it really should not matter to you whether his mother was a virgin.

It's just not an issue on which I am going to waste time thinking, because it won't change my beliefs, my actions, or my religion one bit.

OK, so then what that article is saying is that every Christian (almost) in the U.S. believes in the Virgin Birth as fact. I'm sorry, but that's tremendously hard to believe. I'd believe 50%, but 79%?

It was pretty obvious what the account was set up for...

...or am I one of the few who can see that?

GoldenEagle 12-07-2004 10:56 AM

I think his account was set up to stir political controversy, but many of the FOFCers have the same purpose. I do not think we can go reaching for the ban button everytime someone wants to stir up contorversy.

Isn't believing int he Virign Birth one of the major factors in being a Christian?

flere-imsaho 12-07-2004 11:27 AM

The way the article is worded, though, indicates that 79% of Americans believe that it happened as fact (in spite of the evolutionary impossibility, etc...).

Although yes, if you're a Christian you're supposed to believe in this, implicitly, in reality whole swathes of more "liberal" Christianity only tacitly "believe" in this. I'm thinking of Unitarians & Congregationalists in particular, but know folks from all Christian sects who don't actually believe in the Virgin Birth.

That's what makes the number seem unreal to me.

NO ONE is EVER going to get away with setting up a second account just to stir up political controversy. In my opinion, that is the very definition of trolling. If you want to debate an issue, have the guts to do it under your everyday screen name. It is the height of gutlessness to hide behind a second (or likely third, in this case) internet screen name.

Franklinnoble 12-07-2004 11:47 AM

I think SkyDog's trigger-finger was a little too quick on this one...

My guess is that the HNIC is a Georgia Tech fan, and that's why he was banned.

I don't know about the banning part, but the dirgible post in the dynasty section makes me wonder if they offer internet access for "safe" patients in mental wards.
