OT: Medieval - Total War Problems

I just picked up Medieval - Total War with the Viking expansion (for 19.99!) and when i go to load a campaign or the tutorial it will crash straight to my desktop with no error. It doesn't do it all the time, just enough to be very annoying. I've got it all patched up (the orig. and the expansion) and my video card drivers are up to date as well.

I couldn't seem to find anything that would help me over on the totalwar.com forums aside from dropping my resolution down to 800x600 which did not work. Any help would be great... i really want to get into this, but it's damn near impossible when half the time i load up a game it crashes to my desktop. Thanks

dola

just crashed to the desktop again on me, except this time it was while i was playing, not while i was loading. I hope i can figure out some way to resolve this, because i'm enjoying it very much so far

Did you logoff all the other user accounts on your machine, and close down any unnecessary background programs that were running? If windows ME is your operating system, its no wonder it wont work :).

i'm running XP

and of course i didn't shut down any background programs, nor did i turn of my anti-virus stuff. :D

seriously though, i'll give it a run in the morning with anti-virus off and i'll shut down some of the programs that could have been causing it some problems (itunes, opera, outlook, P2P stuffs, etc etc)

How old is your monitor?

Shepp 12-30-2004 07:14 AM

Make sure you have all of your driversand DirectX updated, and that you are running a current version media player. Both Medieval and Shogun were a major pain in the ass to get working for me.

this is starting to drive me crazy. It crashes everytime i try to load my autosave. I've closed down every other program i was running and shut off my virus protection and it still won't work. I've got a fairly new 17 inch LCD monitor

jbmagic 12-30-2004 11:29 AM

you have the latest directx and latest video driver?

and you update windows xp ?

Coffee Warlord 12-30-2004 11:32 AM

Just to cover the Stupid Stuff.

You have patched the game itself, right?

McSweeny 12-30-2004 12:26 PM

video driverse, directx and xp are all updated

so is the game itself

i was able to get it to load without crashing to the desktop by dropping my hardware acceleration settings down two notches, but it still seems prone to in game crashing when i do that

gstelmack 12-30-2004 07:59 PM

Sound drivers updated? What video card, sound card do you have? What type of machine? More detailed system specs would help here.

McSweeny 12-31-2004 10:36 AM

all my drivers are updated. I've got a GeForce FX 5500. Onboard Sound. I'm running a computer i put together myself. AMD Athlon 64 3000+ with a gig of RAM and i'm running XP SP2.

It's gotten a little better since i tweaked the in game graphic settings, but it still crashes too much to be playable

If you're overclocking anything, stop and see if that helps. Otherwise you're looking at a conflict of some sort going on here.

gstelmack 12-31-2004 12:27 PM

Oh, and just to cover all bases: ALL drivers includes your motherboard drivers as well, right?

McSweeny 12-31-2004 12:43 PM

yeah motherboard drivers are updated as well. I've got my video card overclocked so i'll turn that off and see if it helps.

stevew 12-31-2004 12:50 PM

Did you run any spyware removers? Always a possible culprit.

jbmagic 12-31-2004 01:52 PM

how you are installing MTW and viking expansion and the patch

I'll be giving it a shot with the spyware gone and the overclocking stopped in a bit and i'll report back
