Want to make $400 in two hours?

Im gonna try to. Just have to call your bookie and put down four dollars on the Sooners.

Play Oklahoma over UCONN tonight. Their defense should be enough to cover the small number in my opinion, and thats where my cash is.

Game starts at 9 on ESPN.

korme 01-10-2005 08:09 PM

what's the line? i want to play, how do i find a bookie..

vex 01-10-2005 08:12 PM

Joe 01-10-2005 08:16 PM

It's almost halftime now - but you were right on, I was at the Central Connecticut/FDU game and didn't get home in time to make this play but it dawned on me earlier in the night that UConn was going to get crushed. They are painfully overrated.

bryce 01-10-2005 09:03 PM

it's funny this got mentioned - i was watching the early game, syracuse-notre dame, and those announcers dropped a few quips about how powerful uconn was and how overmatched ou would be. and then in the between game in-studio 'analysis,' they continued with the same theme.

all the while, i'm thinking, 'wow, another east coast bias example. ou is actually decent, plus playing at home, which is huge in college hoops, especially during the week, i think a lot of people are in for a surprise.' i will say i didn't lay any money down, though, as i generally avoid games where two powers are playing each other (and by power i mean top 25 team or so.). but, yea, this first half comes as no surprise to me..

B & B 01-10-2005 10:20 PM

Oklahoma 77
UCONN 65

Right at the two hour mark as well, despite higher scoring than anticipated. If you're still up, try and catch some of the midnight game between Utah (32-3 at home L5Y in conf) versus UNLV led by waterbug PG Blassingame. That guy is fun to watch. Should be entertaining.

So my question is...did you make the money?

B & B 01-10-2005 10:44 PM

Yes, I cashed it.

The thing about gambling, be it sports, poker, etc. there's always ups and downs.
Dont congratulate yourself too much after a win, or berate yourself either and above all - play within your means.
I'll be looking to 'double up' again this weekend as Im eyeing an NFL divisional game.

Joe 01-10-2005 10:53 PM

take the vikings at +9.5

A $4 dollar bet paid $400?

A lotof gamblers have a tendency to use small currencies when describing "large" bets. I have a lot of friends who bet sports regularly, and they very frequently refer to a "nickel" when they mean $500, a "dime" when they mean "$1,000" and so forth. It's just a common shorthand.

Here, "four dollars" essentially means "four hundred dollars" (or more likely, four hundred and forty, to cover the vig).

Sorry if you were just being funny -- but there's bound to be someone who needed this explanation.

Ohhhh!! ME!!ME!ME!

Maple Leafs 01-11-2005 09:37 AM

(Suddenly gets really nervous about that $4 bet he made with the big guy from the back of the bar.)

Suicane75 01-11-2005 09:41 AM

There is a really good reason that Vikings line is 9 1/2. And there are alot of people who are gonna be out alot of money come Monday morning.

rkmsuf 01-11-2005 10:19 AM

Wanna make $14 dollars the hard way?

So, does betting a "buck" essentially mean $100?

As usual, close to half of those who bet on the game.

It might - I don't recall hearing people speak that way, but the "small money" lingo is clearly pervasive. Wouldn't surprise me to hear someone call $100 a "buck" just like a "dollar" was used above. Nobody calls his bookie to actually place five dollars on a bet -- so it's pretty obvious that the 5.00 is shorthand for a more common betting unit -- in hundreds.

At casinos, a lot of players refer to chips by their coin denominations -- at the cage, people ask for "nickels" or "quarters" when they mean $5 and $25 chips. Beats me why it's so common, but I suppose it's bound to offend Maple Leafs even more. *shurg*

B & B 01-11-2005 10:34 AM

ABC - Id just say a 'dollar', but Im sure a buck could be used in some areas.

QS is right as I dont see that line moving more than 1pt off where it is now. Should be pretty close to even action. Have to believe that the INDY/NE game will be the most widely played game this weekend, but Im already passing on that one. Strange enough is that the MINNE/PHILLY game is one Im looking the closest at, but we'll see.

I was speaking more about the people jumping all over the Vikings, but if you wanna be analytical about it. :D

I am an OU fan, so I am inherently skeptical about picking OU in a basketball game, but I did think that if OU won, they would cover. Because I didn't think they would win a 1, 2, or 3 point game, plus games don't usually end up 5 points anyway because of fouling late.

I did like the over though. Kelvin is letting this team play in transitition and they do it really well this year. Last year you could take OU and every under. This year you can almost take every over because their defensive reputation will hold the line down.

Not being funny. I'm not a gambler and had no idea. I knew that $4 turning into $400 didn't sound right, though.

Franklinnoble 01-11-2005 06:11 PM

I thought this thread was going to have something to do with sperm donations.

If anyone ever figures out a good method for turning $4 into $400 quick, let me know.

Im just about sure on playing the game on Sunday for eight dollars, working on getting it to sixteen. Will post the line and play beforehand just in case anyone wants to coattail. (These NL Holdem tourneys have to stop)

Lemme get some Zzzz's

B & B 01-16-2005 11:54 AM

Eagles -9

Plenty of 8's out there too, but already committed.

sounds good :)

gottimd 01-16-2005 12:02 PM

Minnesota doesn't have a chance today. The Eagles secondary is the best in the NFL. Culpepper will be picked off at least twice today. The Eagles are well-rested and prepared to dominate. The Vikings backed into the playoffs, and look at their last fives games of the year! They lost ALL of them, except one; they beat Detroit by one point!! The Eagles have been waiting for this playoff run for a long time, and they will not be stopped. McNabb will do it all today. Watch for some surprising big runs from him today. The Vikings defense doesn't scare anyone. Andy Reid is 8-0 after bye weeks. Philly will be so fired up today - the temperature will be very cold, and the Vikings will GET BLOWN OUT AND IT WONT BE PRETTY!!!!!!

TLK 01-16-2005 02:11 PM

any thoughts on the IND/NE game? It's currently even up, with 52 1/2 at Bodog....

B & B 01-16-2005 03:25 PM

No thoughts on the INDY/NE game, should be a great game to watch. Gotta pick your spots when you bet.

Eagles - PAYDAY!

B & B 01-31-2005 07:12 PM

Since starting this thread Ive taken my initial 440 stake up to 1,600 and Ive been thinking about turning that amount over one more time to get something substantial. This will be the last 'double up' play for me. Another win and Im putting it all towards a down payment on a Harley Davidson, a loss and Im out 440. Im totally comfortable dropping this amount on one game, and above all, I can still eat/sleep/live with myself after a loss. But, a new ride would be nice.

Due to some one sided action on the Superbowl, Ive been able to get a line that warrants playing a side on Sunday. So, I just went and plunked down the cash for Philadelphia +7 1/2. Most places still have 7, but the hook reeled me in.

Anyone else interested in following can find that same 7 1/2 number at sportsbookDOTcom

B & B 03-11-2005 02:12 PM

Once again I find myself a nice spot to make some money. The last bet was placed a month and a half ago on a Monday before the Super Bowl. Philadelphia won (covered) which doubled up again and brought the original bet to 3,200. Still shopping some Harleys before the weather gets too warm down here and the prices start rising. Anyways, the threads been good luck and Im gonna risk a dime tonight on the best tournament game Ive seen so far.

Playing the Big East game tonight and taking Villanova -6 1/2 over W.Virginia. Just dont see how WVU can score 60 points. Unfortunately, I have some prior plans and wont even be able to watch any of the game but Im still playing Nova tonight for $1,000 of the $3,200

TLK 03-11-2005 04:08 PM

I'm in at -7 for slightly less than a $1,000.... in fact, knock a 0 off...

Lathum 03-11-2005 04:13 PM

Hey B&B and TLK, I'll make a deal with you. I'll take WVU +6 1/2 tonight and each of you send me 10% of your winnings. Otherwise I'll take Villanova, guaranteeing you will both lose. Pick your poison :)

sooner333 03-11-2005 06:53 PM

well, here's hoping for a large comeback and a Mountaineer implosion.

you took Villanova, didn't you?

sooner333 03-11-2005 08:03 PM

19.4 seconds left, WV up by two on the three. Probably the best situation possible for people who picked Nova at this point, meaning a two causes overtime, which is the best way to cover.

sooner333 03-11-2005 08:05 PM

Wow, the two happened, but a foul with 0.2 seconds to go on Nova...sorry guys.

TLK 03-11-2005 08:12 PM

yep... that didn't work as planned. If nothing else, it was a good game that I wouldn't have watched otherwise.

MrBug708 03-11-2005 10:38 PM

I went with UoP tonight. Cost me 100 dollars

I like UoP, but I never want to go against Northridge as long as Ian Boylan is still there (he went to my high school when I was there), which is through this year.

Edit: The last part didn't make sense, due to the few beers in my system. I meant to say, his career is over this year.

No offense but I think you are crazy. With what Webber just went through Illinois is going to blow Minnesota out of the gym, if there was ever a sure thing in sports it is Illinois -13. ( with that being said, take Minnesota )

BTW, I took WVU.

Lathum 03-12-2005 11:05 AM

BTW I'm looking pretty good with Vermont right now. This is easily one of the best weekends in sports

Sure thing? :)

TLK 06-09-2005 08:15 PM

Detroit looks awful good tonight at +6 1/2. I haven't made a bet on a single game since March (a few future bets and an Indy bet), but I guess tonight is as good as any....
