Programming Project Ideas

Since there are some programming people here, I thought I could get some ideas from here.

I am in a databases course and have to do a group project on some database application of our choosing (could be an auction site, a car rental company, a restaurant management system, a library book database, etc.).

I don't want to do any of the examples listed on the course page... does anyone here have some other ideas? This is a fourth year course, so I think the application has to be fairly big (and rely on a database for sure).

how about a database driven university course materials manager.

by that, I mean a system where lecturers can upload slides, notes, homework, past papers etc.. into the system and give a release date or week# etc..

have a website that reads the database and only shows approved info

the benifit would be that lecturers dont have to think too hard throughout the year and students can get up to date info every week etc..

I'd stretch things and make a sports sim ... they're database driven :D

You could do a situational defense evaluator simliar to what primelord is doing for quarterbacks. It might be a little more involved than you're looking for, and doesn't necessarily need to be a database, but it would be awesome to be able to track the history of your defensive performances.

I've been meaning to do it myself, but most of my free time has been used playing KotOR (I & II) and ESPN College Hoops 2K5

I was thinking a baseball sim...

if its a school course though.. chances are you'll all start off motivated, slack off a bit and end up carrying one of the group.

Keep it small.

If you enjoy it, thats when to crank out the big projects... in your own spare time.

If you do try do do a sim of some sort, keep it very very very simple.

A music/CD store.
A Book Store.
A database to handle an online catalog(ecommerce) store.

I'd stick with one of the first couple, and Yoss is right keep it simple. If you plan to model any business there is more detail than you can imagine without some analysis.

If you play MMORPGs at all you could do a database of various things found there. In EQ2 the crafting system is well built to be incorporated into a database.

Football Match Engine Simulator (the players who play would be in a database ;) )
